ItemThe Ecology of Local Land Development Practices: A Case Study of Durand Mill Subdivision (Dekalb County, Georgia)(Georgia Institute of Technology, 1999-12) Suh, YoungOne of the problems facing cities has been an availability of land for buildings, infrastructures and food harvesting for the human occupants. An inclination to fixate on particular aspects of land for tilling and building activities in order to fulfil the physical and psychological needs, people have become locally dependent on land. It has always been the case where people have depended on land for their survival. Because of relatively fixed territories that modem city dwellers inhabit in fulfilling their various needs, complex political and ownership related conflicts became prevalent in society. For this paper, it is intended to provide an example of the dynamics of interplay between nature and people within a microcosm of the world. Within a neighborhood setting where such interplay not only determines survival of organic elements within it, but also determines survival of organisms in areas larger than the context in focus. In examining the processes of creating human settlements and their supportive structures, the objective is to realize that there are other more effective approaches to creating the fundamental settings for human society.

ItemDesign Proposal and Pedestrian Demand Analysis for the Planned Buckhead MARTA Station Access Bridge(Georgia Institute of Technology, 1999-12) Conable, Nathan R.Buckhead has developed in a similar fashion to other centers surrounding central Atlanta. This means that the development has facilitated rapid business growth and accessibility by car. The area took a major step forward in terms of regional auto accessibility when the Georgia 400 freeway opened in the early 1990s. However, the area is in danger of choking on its growth as levels of service on the major arterials are at or below level of service (LOS) E for much of the day. In the first section of this report the transportation problems in Buckhead are placed in a regional and political context. Additionally, current efforts to improve the transportation system are presented and a project is proposed that would augment these efforts. This proposal, for a busway and pedestrian path across Georgia 400 is explored in the remainder of the report. The second and third sections provide an analysis of the potential pedestrian demand for the proposed facility and a capacity analysis, respectively. The report concludes with a series of drawings that show the proposed facility design.
