(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2017-02-01) Kayongo, Derreck
Although Kayongo was born in Uganda, he lived as a refugee in Kenya after the president of Uganda seized power in a military coup before his family was able to settle in the United States. Shaped by these experiences, he has dedicated his life to helping others through entrepreneurship. Kayongo started his own nonprofit, the Global Soap Project, which recycles hotel soap and distributes to refugee camps.

From a war child to a social entreprenuer: crisis can mean opportunity!
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010-02-03) Kayongo, Derreck
Derreck Kayongo, Founder and Chairman of the Global Soap Project spoke at the Impact Speaker Series. His talk is entitled "From a war child to a social entreprenuer: crisis can mean opportunity!" Mr. Kayongo has launched an effort to collect used bars of hotel soap and recycle them for use in refugee camps in Uganda. He sees it as a way to fight the spread of disease and allow U.S. hotels to help Africa while also reducing the amount of trash they are paying to have hauled away to landfills. More than 2 million children worldwide die from diarrheal diseases every year. Hand-washing with soap can reduce this statistic by 42 to 47 percent. The Global Soap Project works to address this issue by sending recycled soap to refugee camps in Africa through partner agencies.
