dc.description.abstract The design of effective auditory displays requires an understanding of both capabilities and response proclivities. This disti ctionis explained in relation to a variety of auditory tasks and a range of acoustic stimuli. Factors that are important in the assessment of auditory processing, such as the type of task, amount of training, and the complexity of the sounds, are discussed in the context of several studies of the perception of complex sounds. It is suggested that auditory science provides many answers to questions about auditory capabilities and proclivities, and at least a few useful principles for the design of effective auditory displays. en_US
