dc.description Niall Gaffney, PhD. is the Director of Data Intensive Computing, Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure / CISE. Texas Advanced Computing Center. Niall Gaffney's background largely revolves around the management and utilization of large inhomogeneous scientific datasets. Prior to that he worked for 13 years in the role of designer and developer for the archives housed at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), which hold the data from the Hubble Space Telescope, Kepler, and James Webb Space Telescope missions. He was also a leader in the development of the Hubble Legacy Archive, projects that harvested the 20+ years of Hubble Space Telescope data to create some of the most sensitive astronomical data products available for open research. Prior to his work at STScI, Niall was worked as "the friend of the telescope" for the Hobby Eberly Telescope (HET) project at the McDonald Observatory in west Texas where he started working to create systems to acquire and handle the storage and distribution of the data the HET produced. en_US
dc.description Kathleen M. Carley, PhD. is the Director of the Center for Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems (CASOS),Carnegie Mellon University. Kathleen M. Carley's research combines cognitive science, social networks and computer science to address complex social and organizational problems. Her specific research areas are dynamic network analysis, computational social and organization theory, adaptation and evolution, social media analytics, and the impact of telecommunication technologies and policy on communication, information diffusion, disease contagion and response within and among groups. She and her teams have developed infrastructure tools for analyzing large scale dynamic networks and various multi-agent simulation systems. The infrastructure tools include: ORA, a statistical toolkit for analyzing and visualizing multi-dimensional networks with special features for social media analysis; NetMapper a text mining tool for extracting networks from texts; and Construct an agent-based simulation model for assesing diffusion in networks with different technologies. She has published hundreds or papers, and several books in the computational social science and network science areas. en_US
