dc.description.abstract Since the first years of the twenty-first century, an increasing number of governmental science funding agencies around the world have expressed interest in promoting transformative research (TR). Public funding agencies are thus experimenting with different ways to make TR happen. The concept of TR nevertheless remains somewhat elusive and subject to debate among scientists, policymakers, and the general public. The following three questions are prominent in this discussion: What precisely is TR? How is it best promoted? Does it actually deserve support? There is as yet no general agreement on answers to any of these questions. en_US
