Radionuclides in Sediment at Nuclear Facilities in Georgia

As part of its environmental radiological surveillance program, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources monitors man-made radionuclides in sediment below the outfalls of nuclear facilities. Sediment acts as a water contaminant indicator and accumulator, and as a potential source of these contaminants for aquatic biota. Locations in the Chattahoochee R., Savannah R., Altamaha R., Etowah R., and Cumberland Sound have been monitored for up to 20 years. Samples typically are collected once per year at designated stations for analysis of photon- emitting radionuclides and, in some cases, Sr-90 and Pu-239. Most samples contained only naturally occurring radionuclides and some residues of fallout from atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons. Reported here are the relatively low levels of radionuclides attributed to facility discharges that occasionally were detected. Results were combined with radionuclide amounts reported in facility effluent and concentrations measured in water and fish to calculate radiation doses to the potential maximally exposed persons. These annual doses by the aquatic pathway were very low in most cases and below the regulatory limits in all cases.

Tritium Concentrations in Northeast Georgia Rainwater

Rainwater has been measured for tritium content in Georgia near the Savannah River Site and the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, which are located on the banks of the Savannah River in South Carolina, and Georgia respectively. The measurements are part of routine long-term environmental monitoring program performed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Results obtained over several years show a gradual decrease in tritium concentrations, associated with reduced tritium release by reactors and tritium production facilities at the Savannah River Site. The information is used to indicate possible sources of tritium in groundwater and in surface waters other than the Savannah River, and to estimate radiation doses to persons in the environment.

Low-Level Tritium Measurements in Groundwater near The Savannah River Site

The results of tritium analyses of ground water collected in 2001 and 2002 by the Georgia DNR in Burke and Screven counties near the Savannah River are reported. In some samples, the tritium concentration was below 10 pCi/L while in others it was between 1,010 and 13 pCi/L. With two exceptions, samples with detectable tritium concentrations were from the nearsurface aquifer, while the other samples were from deeper-lying aquifers. The values are compared with results presented by others during the past 10 years. Inferences by others concerning these findings are reported.

An overview of water resources research sponsored from 1965 to 1994 under the Water Resources Research Act of 1964 and its successor laws is presented. Titles of technical completion reports printed in the Institute publication series are listed by topical categories to indicate the range of interests of the Georgia water research community in the university system, and the needs to which investigators responded. The benefits of the program for state water management professional and university researchers are evaluated and recommendations are given for future activities.
