ItemOptimal dorsal strap placement and angulation to prevent pistoning in an ankle foot orthoses.(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011-04-22) Manee, TylerIn ankle-foot orthoses, straps over the dorsum of the foot are often used to prevent the rise and fall of the heel within the device. The aim of this study is to determine the optimal location and angle of this strap which best reduces pistoning. For a ra

ItemOutstanding Capstone Research Award(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011-04-22) Kogler, Géza F. ; Hovorka, Christopher F.The Outstanding Capstone Research Award was given for the first time. This year's winner is Hosna Sharafi. The award recognizes an MSPO student (2nd year) who presents the best research paper at the Annual Georgia Institute of Technology Prosthetic Orthotic Research Symposium. The recipient of the Award received an individual plaque and a cash prize of $250. The winner of the award will also have their name placed on a plague that will be on permanent display in the School of Applied Physiology. Funding for the award was sponsored, in part, by the Georgia Society of Orthotists and Prosthetists.

ItemUnilateral Transtibial Amputee Dynamic Stability Margin During Treadmill Walking(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011-04-22) Irolla, ChrystaDuring human walking the center of mass (COM) oscillates in the vertical and lateral directions as forces are transferred from one foot to the next. As one walks maintaining balance requires keeping the bodies’ COM within the base of support. Human walkin

ItemAn Instrumented Ankle-Foot Orthosis to Assess the Effect of a Dorsiflexion Resist Force on Ankle Kinematics during Treadmill Walking(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011-04-22) Sharafi, HosnaMany of the orthotic control mechanisms for ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) provide desirable motion control during one part of the gait cycle but inherently may also provide a perturbation in another segment such as unwanted joint movement resistance. This pi

ItemAnalysis of Upper Extremity Amputee Training Methods Using EEG During Praxis Movements(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011-04-22) Cope, MichaelUpper extremity amputees (UEAs) and intact control subjects were shown videos of either intact or prosthetic actors performing different activities of daily living (ADLs). The subjects were then asked to pantomime the ADLs while EEG and EMG signals were r

ItemInfluence of Wrist Position on Upper Extremity Joint Motion During Various Reach Tasks(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011-04-22) Dunham, TylerThe importance of wrist position to the functional performance of various upper extremity movement tasks is not well understood. While the multiple joints of the upper extremity have the ability to adapt to many different wrist positions to conduct a task

ItemThe relationship between skeletal limb position and optimal stability in a stance controlled knee-ankle-foot orthosis determined by a computer simulation model(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011-04-22) Dunning, ChristopherThe exact point during gait at which the knee joint in a Stance Controlled Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses (SCKAFO) is set to unlock is often clinically determined through trial and error by orthotists. In SCKAFO use, when the limb advances from mid-stance throu
