This paper seeks to explain the mechanisms by which friendship affects productivity of academic scientists. The quality of professional relationships determines the individual scientists' ability to pool resources from their personal professional networks and intensifies knowledge exchange within those networks. It finds that multiplex relationships are beneficial for scientific productivity.

This study models personal professional networks of academic scientists as comprised of multiplex relationships. It argues that relational multiplexity affects intensity of the knowledge exchange and resource flow. The study finds variation of relational structures of scientist s networks across ranks and demographic groups such as age, gender and citizenship.
