EmTech: Library Service Center Ingestion [Final Presentation]

Georgia Tech and Emory University are building a high-density storage facility, the Library Service Center, on the Briarcliff Property of Emory University. The building design is based on a model developed at Harvard University and copied by 40+ large academic libraries in the US. The building includes a 40 ft. tall warehouse with industrial rack shelving and set points of 50 degrees F and 30% RH. There is an office building/processing center attached. Although the design of the building has been revised over time, the processes used to prepare and transfer books and microfilm, and manage them in the future has not been studied or changed in several years. This project involves studying workflows at both Emory and Georgia Tech and warehouse technology to improve the speed and accuracy of operations.

Kubota: Domestic Inbound Freight Optimization

This project focuses on minimizing logistics costs for Kubota Manufacturing. The team developed an optimization-based system to decide the routes and modes for shipping parts from 200 suppliers all over the U.S. to Kubota's manufacturing plant in Gainesville, GA. The developed system achieves average savings worth 11% per week in transportation costs.

Inbound Shipment Coordination

The team worked with The Home Depot to reduce its inbound transportation cost by building an optimization model that created multi-stop truck routes. These routes were then consolidated to form groups of frequently combined vendors. The developed tool could save the company over $9M/year.

LTL Logistics Network Optimization

Volunteer Express, a less than truckload logistics provider, traditionally routed all shipments through its hub in Nashville, TN. The routing procedures and capacity constraints adversely affected operational efficiency. The team developed several optimized routing solutions that were compared using statistical analyses. The best routing strategy generated a potential annual savings of approximately $1.2 million.

Our team delivered process improvement and capacity expansion recommendations based on a simulation, and an order scheduling decision-support tool. Interface can expect approximately 20% increase in capacity, $2 million in annual savings, and up to 85% reduction in delayed orders.
