International Trade and Economic Theory: Testing the Gravity Model

2018-11 , Cuccia, Charlotte , Humphries, Zack , Piazza, Gina

This paper offers an addition to the extensive body of research of the gravity model, which predicts that the volume of trade between two countries depends on their relative size and the distance between them. Using both simple and multiple linear regressions, the effects of the various factors of volume of trade, including distance, GNP, regulation, and service sector infrastructure are tested. Thus, relationships are drawn between these variables in a technologically driven age.

Effect of Education on Wage Earning

2018-11 , Talley, Quentin , Wang, Thomas , Zaski, Geoff

The scope of this project includes individuals aged 18-65 who finished their education and do not have significant disadvantages in seeking employment selected from a survey of Georgia residents regarding wage income, education, and other factors. By obtaining estimates of the multiple linear regression coefficients of education, experience, hours worked per week on education, sex, marital status, and employment type, a ceteris paribus effect of educational level on wage income of individuals. It was found that keeping other variables, increasing 1 year of education increases individual income by nearly $8000 per year. This figure can be important in policy making in terms of the revenue effect of increasing funding for education to boost educational level and in individual decisions by providing quantitative indicators of the tradeoffs of furthering education.

A Study Analyzing the Impact of Unionization on State Wages

2018-11 , Mckenzie, Rhone , Tinsley, Sarah , Tsuchiya, Ellie

This study was motivated by existing literature on unions which attempt to understand and measure the impact of unionization on wages and the welfare of workers. Our analysis tries to further this research by exploring the effects unionization has on wages at the state level. Unionization, our main explanatory variable, is identified as the total union coverage by state in both the private and public sectors in all of our models. The explained variable in all of our models is mean hourly wages. Our results suggest that union coverage positively impacts wages. Furthermore, the size of the IT professional sector within a given state’s economy has the largest impact on hourly wages followed by union coverage and GDP.

Factors that Influence Income Inequality Across the Globe

2018-11 , Francis, Emma , Gaysowski, Stephanie , Moen, Nathan

This paper initially sought to analyze the relationship between income inequality, as measured by the Gini coefficient, and the multidimensional poverty index, which measures the levels of deprivation related to health, education, and living standards within a developing nation. However, in the pursuit identifying the factors that affect income inequality, we discovered that other population demographics such as life expectancy and median age are more accurate predictors of levels of income inequality across the globe.

Effects of State Sales Tax on GDP Per Capita: A Statewide Study for the United States

2018-11 , Wilson, Skyler , Chawla, Eesh , Satterfield, Kevin J.

Economists have viewed the relationship between the impact of taxes on the GDP, however research dealing with the sales tax rate and the GDP have yet to be analyzed to the extent that income taxes have been investigated. In an effort to fill this void, we examine how the state sales tax rate across all fifty states within the United States impact the corresponding state’s real GDP per capita. There will be a simple regression model along with additional multiple regressions to analyze the impact of the state sales tax rate on the state’s economy. As a result of this investigation, the R-squared value increased dramatically from the initial simple regression to the last multiple regression model, as well as the statistical significance of certain explanatory variables, including the state sales tax rate.

Relation Between Income Inequality and Economic Growth

2018-11 , Alsaffar, Ibrahim , Eisenhardt, Robert , Kim, Hanjin

This paper analyzes the effect of income inequality on economic growth. Data on the growth rates of 30 countries and Gini-indexes was used. Three regression models were developed, each looking at different set of variables. The models controlled for country differences in the unemployment and inflation rates, using them as general measures of the stability of the economy. Our results showed no significant relationship. Suggestions for improvement of the models and analysis are discussed.

The Impact of Higher Education on Unemployment

2018-11 , Horner, Savannah , Zhang, Athena , Furlong, Madeline

This paper explores the relationship between higher education and unemployment using regression analysis. Our hypothesis is that the greater the government expenditure on higher education, the lower a state’s unemployment will be. Other independent variables such as state GDP per capita, the percentage of the population with bachelor degrees or higher, the cost of college attendance, the share of manufacturing in the state economy, and financial aid as a percentage of state revenue were used in a multi-regression analysis in order to account for bias. Our results found that there is a strong negative relationship between higher education expenditures and unemployment.

Measuring the Impact of the Finance Industry on States’ Economic Growth

2018-11 , Aladesanmi, Ayo , Angell, Haigh

This paper analyzes how per capita GDP has grown in the 50 states within the U.S. between the years 2006 and 2016, and how different economic indicators have affected economic growth. Particularly, we examine the link between per capita GDP growth and the growth of state-level financial industries. By studying the links between these two variables, we were able to determine a statistically significant connection between the the growth of U.S. states’ finance industries and state-level per capita GDP growth over the course of the given time period.

Estimation of the effect of Income Inequality on Human Development: A Cross Sectional Study

2018-11 , Parikh, Ishan , Srinivasan, Vivek , Patel, Jay

Throughout history, there has been overwhelming evidence that high levels of economic inequality correlate with low levels of human development, measured by the human development index. Our group’s overall objective was to observe the effect of income inequality on human development levels by compiling Gini coefficient and Human Development Index statistics on 78 randomly selected countries from across the world. We ultimately found that the gini index predominantly has a strong positive relationship with the human development index ,but more so in developed countries than in developing nations. This is mainly due to the fact that globalization effects have not fully reached all of these countries’ populations; as a result, these populations are still transitioning out of abject poverty and therefore have low levels of economic inequality. In addition, after running additional variables, including urban population, pollution levels, GDP Growth, external debt to gdp ratio, and index of economic freedom, we find that there are differences in significance with these variables with respect to their impacts on human development levels.

Tariffs and Taxes versus Labor Regulation: Analyzing Which Government Policies Help and Hurt Domestic Economies

2018-11 , Abbas, Aarij , Park, Gemma

The struggle to find the right balance between government intervention and the invisible hand of the market is familiar to all who have tried to form any semblance of economic policy. Due to the vast number of policy sectors that affect a country’s economic prosperity, the same approaches can have varying degrees of success in different countries. This study takes a data set collected by the Heritage Foundation that has studied the regulatory practices of 173 countries in the areas of trade, business freedom, labor freedom and other factors that are proven to have an effect on a country’s economic growth and prosperity. We hypothesize that factors such as trade policy and business regulation will have a much larger effect on a country’s economic outlook, while factors such as labor regulation will have a comparatively low impact.
