    Lithographically-defined Multi-standard Multi-frequency High-q Tunable Micromechanical Resonators
    ( 12/29/2009)
Disclosed are micromechanical resonator apparatus having features that permit multiple resonators on the same substrate to operate at different operating frequencies. Exemplary micromechanical resonator apparatus includes a support substrate and suspended micromechanical resonator apparatus having a resonance frequency. In one embodiment, the suspended micromechanical resonator apparatus comprises a device substrate that is suspended from and attached to the support substrate, a piezoelectric layer formed on the suspended device substrate, and a plurality of interdigitated upper electrodes formed on the piezoelectric layer. In another embodiment, the suspended micromechanical resonator apparatus comprises a device substrate that is suspended from and attached to the support substrate, a lower electrode formed on the suspended device substrate, a piezoelectric layer formed on the lower electrode, and a plurality of interdigitated upper electrodes formed on the piezoelectric layer. The substrate may comprise a silicon substrate, or a semiconductor-on-insulator substrate, such as a diamond on silicon substrate. Additionally, lateral frequency-adjusting electrodes may be disposed adjacent to the resonator apparatus that are separated therefrom by a capacitive gap, and which are configured to receive a direct current voltage that adjusts the resonance frequency of the resonator apparatus.

    Methods Of Fabricating Nanoscale-to-microscale Structures
    ( 11/10/2009)
Methods for the production of shaped nanoscale-to-microscale structures, wherein a nanoscale-to-microscale template is provided having an original chemical composition and an original shape, and the nanoscale-to-microscale template subjected to a chemical reaction, so as to partially or completely convert the nanoscale-to-microscale template into the shaped nanoscale-to-microscale structure having a chemical composition different than the original chemical composition and having substantially the same shape as the original shape, being a scaled version of the original shape. The shaped nanoscale-to-microscale structure formed comprises an element (such as silicon), a metallic alloy (such as a silicon alloy), or a non-oxide compound (such as silicon carbide or silicon nitride).

Nano-sized Optical Fluorescence Labels And Uses Thereof
    ( 11/3/2009)
A composition is disclosed which is capable of being used for detection, comprising an encapsulated noble metal nanocluster. Methods for preparing the encapsulated noble metal nanoclusters, and methods of using the encapsulated noble metal nanoclusters are also disclosed. The noble metal nanoclusters are preferably encapsulated by a dendrimer or a peptide. The encapsulated noble metal nanoclusters have a characteristic spectral emission, wherein said spectral emission is varied by controlling the nature of the encapsulating material, such as by controlling the size of the nanocluster and/or the generation of the dendrimer, and wherein said emission is used to provide information about a biological state.

Harmonic CMUT Devices And Fabrication Methods
    ( 11/3/2009)
Harmonic capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer ("cMUT") devices and fabrication methods are provided. In a preferred embodiment, a harmonic cMUT device generally comprises a membrane having a non-uniform mass distribution. A mass load positioned along the membrane can be utilized to alter the mass distribution of the membrane. The mass load can be a part of the membrane and formed of the same material or a different material as the membrane. The mass load can be positioned to correspond with a vibration mode of the membrane, and also to adjust or shift a vibration mode of the membrane. The mass load can also be positioned at predetermined locations along the membrane to control the harmonic vibrations of the membrane. A cMUT can also comprise a cavity defined by the membrane, a first electrode proximate the membrane, and a second electrode proximate a substrate. Other embodiments are also claimed and described.
