Relationship Between Bicycle Infrastructure and Bicycle Commuters in the Context of Metro Atlanta
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2023-04) Brock, Cooper
This research paper looks to identify the correlation between bicycle facilities and bicycle commuters in the Metro Atlanta region using Atlanta Regional Commission bicycle inventory and American Community Survey demographic data. First the context of Metro Atlanta is defined through the lens of education, race, and income. Next, a literature review is performed to identify previous research and trends to determine variables to use and to better prepare for any expected or unexpected results from the analysis. A linear multivariable regression model is run using the percent bike commuters and length of paths divided by total area per census tract, with control variables accounting for gender, age, race, education, income, and commute time included. A statistically significant correlation was found between bicycle commuters and quantity of bike paths, percent male, and commute time. From the literature review, recommendations from these results include promoting ebike rebate programs, increasing density and diversity of land uses, and to pursue existing mobility plans such as Cycle Atlanta and Walk!Bike!Thrive! that would promote increasing the density and connectivity of the bicycle network to make bicycle commuting a more viable option.
