An interface current balance formulation of neutral atom transport theory in plasmas

1997-01 , Stacey, Weston M.

An interface current balance (ICB) method for neutral particle transport is presented and specialized to the calculation of neutral atom transport in background plasmas. A multigroup extension of the ICB methodology is presented which enables the direct calculation of neutral atom energy distributions and energy and momentum transport, as well as particle transport. Extension of the ICB methodology to multidimensions recovers the transmission/escape probability method.

Poloidal rotation and density asymmetries in a tokamak plasma with strong toroidal rotation

1992-10 , Stacey, Weston M.

A neoclassical model for calculating poloidal rotation and poloidal density asymmetries in a tokamak plasma with vϕ∼vth and E/Bθ∼O(1) is developed. Application is made to the analysis of a deuterium plasma with a dominant carbon impurity. The dependences of the results on collisionality, the anomalous radial deuterium flux and the toroidal rotation speed are evaluated. The implications of the calculated poloidal velocities and density asymmetries for the magnitude of the gyroviscous torque are discussed.

Poloidal rotation, density asymmetries, and momentum confinement in tokamak experiments

1993-06 , Stacey, Weston M. , Jackson, D. R.

Poloidal rotation speeds and density asymmetries are calculated for the deuterium and dominant carbon (oxygen) impurity ions in discharges in the Axially Symmetric Divertor Experiment (ASDEX) [Proceedings of the 13th Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion Research, (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), p. 325], Doublet III (DIII) [Nucl. Fusion 26, 543 (1986)], Impurity Studies Experiment (ISX‐B) [Nucl. Fusion 23, 1017 (1983)], Joint European Torus (JET) [Nucl. Fusion 31, 31 (1991)] and Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) (National Technical Information Document No. PB92177187) for which vϕ∼vth for the ions. These poloidal rotation speeds and density asymmetries are used to evaluate the neoclassical gyroviscous model for the momentum confinement time. The rather good agreement with experimental momentum confinement times obtained over this wide range of plasma parameters provides a measure of confidence in the calculated density asymmetries and poloidal rotation, as well as demonstrating that neoclassical calculations can predict momentum confinement in tokamaks.
