Over 2 million tons of post-consumer carpet is landfilled each year. This waste carpet is a potential resource for composites. This paper focuses on the processing and properties of nylon 6 post-consumer carpet. The carpet is cleaned, shredded and extrusion pelletized. This feedstock is compounded with glass fibers and compatibilizers. Based on the properties achieved and the projected costs, applications are identified.

Preliminary Process Design for Depolymerizing Nylon 6 Carpet in a Twin Screw Extruder
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2002-05-13) Muzzy, John D.
Preliminary design and economic evaluations will be presented for the depolymerization of nylon 6 carpet in a twin screw extruder. The effects of plant size and selected processing conditions on crude caprolactam conversion costs will be illustrated.

    Plastics Processing from Recycled Fibers
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2001-05-01) Muzzy, John D.
This workshop addresses material and processing issues in converting fiber wastes into plastic products. Examples of products derived from recycled fibers will be presented. The use of additives, compatibilizers and reinforcements to enhance properties will be illustrated. For mixed fiber waste the issue of what must be removed and what can be retained will be addressed.
