Co-Creating the Beginnings of a Culture of Belonging at the Georgia Tech Library: Supervisors, Leaders, and a Proposed Model Forward
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2023-05) Freeman, John Mack ; Sharp, Leslie
In 2019, the Georgia Tech Library was coming out of a painful period of transition where lofty change initiatives had created significant toxicity in the culture. New leadership was brought in to rectify the situation. Through a series of efforts that translated institutional efforts, departmental actions, and team-based support, the Georgia Tech Library turned a corner and started working towards creating a culture of belonging. In this participatory case study, the authors proposed a nested model of cultural support in which the underpinnings of individual support flow from the team, the department, and the institution. Each part has a role to play in working to create a culture of belonging, understanding that the work is never complete, and that while the example of the Georgia Tech Library has made progress, there is still much work to be done.

Multimodal Information Literacy in Higher Education: Critical Thinking, Technology, and Technical Skill
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2020-01) Givens, Marlee ; Holdsworth, Liz ; Mi, Ximin ; Rascoe, Fred ; Valk, Alison ; Viars, Karen
This chapter addresses technology in education, multimodal texts, and information literacy in a STEM research-focused university setting. Students produce multimodal content in first year composition classes, but composition instructors lack the skills required to teach students multimedia technology. Librarians respond to the needs of the faculty and students they support. Library instruction takes place within the composition class (course-integrated or “one-shot” instruction) or in a multimedia classroom at the library. The librarians bring technical skills as well as a grounding in information literacy, and their instruction increases students' written, sonic, visual and data literacy. As a result, students become more savvy content consumers as well as creators. Final version published in Handbook of Research on Integrating Digital Technology With Literacy Pedagogies, IGI Global, 2020.

Information Sources and Collection Planning for Engineering
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013) Baer, William ; Renfro, Crystal
This chapter will provide background for practicing librarians who have collection development responsibilities for engineering programs at academic institutions. Although it is intended as a resource for all engineering bibliographers, new librarians or those new to the technical fields may find it especially useful. Engineers (and engineering students) use information quite differently than other disciplines, and this can make collection development a daunting task. Furthermore, it is common for librarians with no background in engineering or technology to be assigned to manage the engineering collection. The information and tips contained in this chapter are meant to make this job easier.
