Nostalgic Futures: 25 Years of Imagining the Future
( 2019-03-28) Henderson, Kirk ; Levy, Laura ; Zeaglar, Clint
Clint Zeaglar and Laura Levy, curators of Nostalgic Futures: 25 Years of Imagining the Future, reflect on the exhibit Thursday, March 28 at 11 a.m. in the Georgia Tech Library's third floor Data Visualization and retroTECH lab. The exhibit, developed the Graphics Visualization and Usability (GVU) Center, documents the contributions of Georgia Tech researchers to a variety of technologies we now take for granted. Its researchers were among the pioneers of these fields. “There was a time when information was conveyed through tables of numbers,” said Zeagler. “Now we are so used to being presented with beautiful infographics that we forget how much thought and research goes into creating those visualizations.”

Atari Age: The Emergence of Video Games in America
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2017-02-02) Newman, Michael
During their decade of emergence ‐‐ from 1972, when Pong was introduced, to the height of Pac‐Man Fever in 1982 ‐‐ the new medium of video games was understood in contradictory ways. Would video games embody middle‐class legitimacy or reflect the lingering disrepute of pinball arcades? Were they a new, participatory use for television or an intensification of television’s power? Would they foster family togetherness or allow boys to escape from domesticity? Would they make the new home computer a tool for education or a potentially wasteful toy? Michael Newman charts the emergence of video games in America from ball‐and-paddle games to hits like Space Invaders and Pac‐Man, describing their relationship to other amusements and technologies and showing how they came to be identified with the middle class, youth, and masculinity.

How does the Library Renewal connect to the campus sustainability plan? These topics will be discussed by Ameet Doshi (Georgia Tech Library), Howard Wertheimer (Capital Planning & Space Management), and Stuart Romm (College of Architecture, Principal-in-Charge with LP3 Architecture, Atlanta).
