Georgia Tech's Library Next grew from a building renovation into a total reinvention of the Library for the 21st century. A key part of Library Next is the creation of an online presence that delivers services and content at scale. Learn how the Georgia Tech Library used portfolio and project management to change a dated website into a modern, top-shelf Drupal platform. The result is a highly customizable and technologically advanced website that puts the Library in a leadership position among campus and higher education peers. This session will focus on the context of the online presence transformation, the Library's portfolio and project management strategy, and the design and development involved in creating the new website.

Virtual Browsing with Primo & Syndetics Unbound

The objective of this session is to help Alma/Primo libraries make decisions about selecting virtual browsing products and integrating them with the new Primo UI. When the Georgia Tech Library relocated the majority of its physical collection to an off-site storage facility, it became increasingly important to provide a virtual browsing experience to our patrons. In this session we will discuss what criteria could be considered to evaluate various virtual browsing options including Primo's native virtual shelf. The session will touch upon such evaluation criteria as user expectations; compatibility with Primo and other products already owned by Georgia Tech Library; complexity of implementation and maintenance; and the solution’s sustainability over time. It will also cover our reasons for selecting Syndetics Unbound, questions we considered during the set up, and challenges we experienced. The benefits and shortcomings of the Syndetics Unbound Virtual Browse Shelf will also be highlighted. Finally, we will address Georgia Tech librarians’, undergraduate and graduate patrons’ feedback about using Syndetics Virtual Browse Shelf, features they find attractive and potential improvements they recommend. At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to make an educated decision about implementing Syndetics at their own institutions.

Persistence and teamwork for new horizons: Exploring a distributed teaching model in support of information literacy competencies

The Georgia Tech Writing and Composition program, part of the School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC) builds first-year composition courses around literature, film, science, technology, and pop culture. The Library has long been embedded in this program, providing resources and course-integrated instruction led by the subject librarian for the LMC. This is a highly successful partnership with increasing demand far beyond the capabilities of a single person to meet. For the first time, librarians whose background or primary focus is science and engineering are providing instruction to undergraduate English students. In a STEM school primarily concerned with the history of technological literature, the approach breaks new ground by combining efforts across disciplines. This presentation elucidates the model and offer perspectives from three embedded Georgia Tech subject librarians. Additionally, they will reflect on their first year in the new program, examine broader trends in library liaison models, and anticipate future developments. In early 2016, the Georgia Tech Library reorganized many of its subject and other public-facing librarians into a single department, called Campus Engagement and Scholarly Outreach (CESO). This unit breaks down traditional liaison barriers in order to meet the rapidly shifting needs of the students, faculty, and staff of Georgia Tech. In addition to liaison librarians, CESO includes experts in assessment, digital scholarship, and data visualization among other areas of expertise. This colocation of different kinds of expertise lead to the creation of the distributed teaching model, where influences from around the academy inform and enhance instruction. Undergraduate Business Teaching and Library Opportunities at Georgia Tech

This study investigates the instruction support needs for undergraduate business classes at the Scheller College of Business at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Ten faculty members shared their thoughts and needs on course content, classroom technologies, pedagogies, collaboration, and possible tools for the future. In these discussions, we saw opportunities for the Georgia Tech Library through New Faculty Orientation, course reserves and interlibrary loan service, access to video and other online content, and integrating library information to Canvas, the new campus learning management system.

Investigating the Practices and Needs of Civil and Environmental Engineering Scholars at Georgia Tech

In 2017, librarians at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) joined with librarians at 10 other research institutions in a project to examine the research practices of academics in civil and environmental engineering. The project was led and coordinated by Ithaka S+R, a non-profit organization that provides research and strategic guidance to help libraries navigate economic and technological change. The research was sponsored by the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers). The project research consisted of interviewing 11 members of the research faculty in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and subsequent analysis and reporting based on findings. The specific researcher practices examined included such informational behaviors as: scholarly collaboration, information seeking, research data management, and scholarly communication and dissemination. The purpose of examining these practices was to find areas of opportunity where library services and resources can support the civil and environmental engineering researchers.
