ItemIntelligent Design in the Classroom?(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006-11-28) Borenstein, JasonControversy continues to circulate about evolution, raising the issue of whether public schools are the appropriate forum for teaching about the subject matter. In recent years, critics have offered forward a view called intelligent design, which seeks to illustrate alleged shortcomings in evolutionary theory. Intelligent design supporters argue that students should be made aware of evolution’s failings and suggest that alternatives to evolution need to be taught, which may include intelligent design. Yet a key issue that must be resolved is whether a proper educational approach in the biology classroom includes teaching intelligent design alongside evolution.

ItemChemical Cues in the Ocean(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006-04-25) Kubanek, JuliaWe are all at the mercy of molecules: hormones affect our sexual interests, toxins give us food poisoning, polluting chemicals give us asthma, and the smell of Krispy Kreme tugs on the steering wheel whenever we drive along Ponce de Leon Ave. Molecules play an even greater role in the lives of marine plants, animals, and microorganisms. On coral reefs and in the open ocean, chemicals affect who eats who, who settles down next to who, and who can fight off a potentially deadly infection. In lab and field experiments, Georgia Tech faculty and students are working to understand the role of natural chemical compounds in the survival and reproduction of marine organisms.

ItemInstitutional Repositories and the Need for "Value-added" Services(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006-04-04) Walters, Tyler O.Institutional Repositories are moving into a new phase beyond the initial model of store, organize and access intellectual output. The growth industry for IRs may be around identifying and implementing constructive ways to use the scholarly information they contain. We need to integrate IRs into the "information fabric" of our campuses’ academic and business processes in terms of university goals and faculty needs.
