CU @ the MTG: Using Online Tools for Collaboration
(Georgia Institute of Technology, 2007-02-23) Gohn, Katie ; Fancher, Lauren ; Minton, Karen
GALILEO, Georgia's Virtual Library, has a history of collaboration with the libraries that it serves, including committees, focus groups, surveys, and review processes. In Phase II of a three year project to upgrade GALILEO, three Community Customization Working Groups are meeting weekly online to discuss issues and requirements for new interfaces for each community – K12, public library, and academic. Interactive polling, demonstrations, talking, and text-based chatting are some of the methods used to engage the 44 participants from their desktops, without the need to drive across the state to a meeting. In addition to online meeting software, other online tools that are being used include a web-based project discussion forum and listservs. This session explores the benefits and challenges associated with using online tools for collaboration with geographically-distributed groups, including approaches to encouraging interactivity and participation.
