    Two studies in statistical data analysis for the space industry: cyclicality in the industry, and comparative satellite reliability analysis

    This thesis brings statistical analyses techniques to bear on data derived from an extensive database of satellite launches and on-orbit anomalies and failures. The data collected is analyzed from two different perspectives and addresses, in two separate studies, two research objectives. The first study proposes to identify trends and cyclical patterns in the space industry, and to forecast the volume of launches for the next few years. Satellites have been rightfully described as the lifeblood of the entire space industry and the number of satellites ordered or launched per year is an important defining metric of the industry's level of activity. The structure of the space industry, its financial health and its workforce retention and development is dependent on the volume of satellites contracted. As such, trends and variability in this volume have significant strategic impact on the space industry. Over the past 40+ years, hundreds of satellites have been launched every year. Thus, an important data set is available for time series analysis and identification of trends and cycles in the various markets of the space industry. For the purpose of this first study, we collected data for over 6,000 satellites launched since 1960 on a yearly basis. We separated the satellites into three broad segments: 1) defense and intelligence satellites, 2) science satellites, and 3) commercial satellites. Several techniques are available for the analysis of time series data, both in the time domain and in the frequency domain. In this first study, we conducted spectral analysis of the time series for each of the three satellite populations and identified cycles contained in the data. In addition, once harmonic models were derived and fitted to the data, we built forecasting models of satellite launch volumes in the different market segments for the next few years. The potential implications of the results are discussed as a number of strategic matters for the space industry are contingent on the predictions or forecast of the volume of satellites contracted (the example of the U.S. auto industry is a solemn reminder of such possible strategic issues). The second study uses the previously collected launch data, confined to Earth-orbiting satellites launched between 1990 and 2008, and expanded with the failure information and retirement of each satellite to conduct a comparative analysis of satellite reliability in GEO, LEO, and MEO orbits. Reliability has long been recognized as an essential consideration in the design of space systems. However, there is limited statistical analysis of satellite reliability based on actual flight data. The objective of this second study is to conduct nonparametric satellite reliability analysis, with orbit type as a covariate, and to explore appropriate parametric fits (Weibull, lognormal, and mixture distributions). The results indicate for example that differences exist between the failure behaviors of satellites in different orbits, or that satellite infant mortality exists or dominates more clearly in a particular orbit type. The findings can be useful to satellite manufacturers as they would provide an empirical basis for reviewing and adjusting satellite testing and burn-in procedures.

    Finding a representative day for simulation analyses

    Many models exist in the aerospace industry that attempt to replicate the National Airspace System (NAS). The complexity of the NAS makes it a system that can be modeled in a variety of ways. While some NAS models are very detailed and take many factors into account, runtime of these simulations can be on the magnitude of hours (to simulate a single day). Other models forgo details in order to decrease the runtime of their simulation. Most models are capable of simulating a 24 hour period in the NAS. An analysis of an entire year would mean running the simulation for every day in the year, which would result in a long run time. The following thesis work presents a tool that is capable of giving the user a day that can be used in a simulation and will produce results similar to simulating the entire year. Taking in parameters chosen by the user, the tool outputs a single day, multiple days, or a composite day (based on percentages of days). Statistical methods were then used to compare each day to the overall year. On top of finding a single representative day, the ability to find a composite day was added. After implementing a brute force search technique to find the composite day, the long runtime was deemed inconvenient for the user. To solve this problem, a heuristic search method was created that would search the solution space in a short time and still output a composite day that represented the year. With a short runtime, the user would be able to run the program multiple times. Once the heuristic method was implemented, it was found that it performed well enough to make it an option for the user to choose. The final version of this tool was used to find a representative day and the result was used in comparison with output data from a NAS simulation model. Because the tool found the representative day based on historical data, it could be used to validate the effectiveness of the simulation model. The following thesis will go into detail about how this tool, the Representative Day Finder, was created.

    Dynamics of longitudinally forced bluff body flames with varying dilatation ratios

    This thesis focuses on experimentally measuring the response of varying dilatation ratio bluff body flames under harmonic excitation. Such flames are often encountered in jet engine afterburners and are susceptible to combustion instabilities. Previous work has been done modeling such flames, however, only limited experimental data has been obtained at these conditions and is the motivation for this thesis. The focus of this work is to measure the transfer function of longitudinally forced, varying dilatation ratio bluff body flames. The transfer function is obtained by measuring flame position and flame luminosity fluctuations at the forcing frequency. Specifically, the amplitude and phase of the fluctuations are characterized as a function of flow velocity, axial location, and perturbation amplitude. These measurements are also compared to available theoretical predictions, showing that qualitative measured trends are consistent with theory. In addition, a detailed quantitative comparison is performed at one condition, showing good agreement between predictions and measurements in the near and mid-field of the flame response. However, agreement is not obtained in the far-field, indicating that continued theoretical work is needed to understand the flame response characteristics in this region.

    Investigation of a stop-fold tiltrotor

    In 1967 the US Air Force solicited proposals for ``low-disc-loading [Vertical Takeoff and Landing] configurations suitable for high speed flight.' Bell Helicopter elected to respond with a proposal after initial analysis on configurations including a stopped edgewise disc and a trail rotor. They concluded that a folding proprotor design would best meet the requirements laid forth. Initial analysis work began on this folding proprotor (stop-fold) design in the same year and concluded in 1972 with a full scale 25 foot diameter pylon and rotor assembly wind tunnel test at the NASA-Ames Large Scale Wind Tunnel. The project was concluded at this point and never resulted in a production or research aircraft. The original proposed stop-fold tiltrotor design by Bell Helicopter allowed for vertical takeoff and landing, a transition sequence rotating the pylon rotor assembly from helicopter to airplane mode, a conversion sequence during which the rotor stopped and blades folded along the pylon, and a transition from prop thrust to auxiliary jet engine power while the rotor was being stopped. This configuration effectively removes the high-speed restraints typical of a prop-driven aircraft and instead opens a flight envelope comparable to a fixed-wing jet. This project entails both the simulation and basic analysis of the stop-fold concept with special attention to frequency responses and potential coupling between modes.

    Finite element-based failure models for carbon/epoxy tape composites

    Laminated carbon/epoxy composite structures are increasingly used in the aerospace industries. Low weight, elastic tailoring, and high durability make the composite materials well suited for replacement of conventional metallic structures. However the difficulty to capture structural failure phenomena is a significant barrier to more extensive use of laminated composites. Predictions are challenging because matrix (resin) dominated failure mechanisms such as delaminations and matrix cracking contribute to the structural failure in addition to fiber-dominated failures. A key to rigorous failure predictions for composites is availability of measurements to quantify structural model parameters including matrix-dominated stress-strain relations and failure criteria. Novel techniques for measurement of nonlinear interlaminar constitutive properties in tape composites have been recently developed at Georgia Institute of Technology. Development of methods for accurate predictions of failure in carbon/epoxy tape laminate configurations with complex lay-ups is the main focus of this work. Failures through delamination and matrix cracking are considered. The first objective of this effort is to implement nonlinear interlaminar shear stress-strain relations for IM7/8552 carbon/epoxy tape in ABAQUS finite element models and validate structural delamination failure predictions with tests. Test data for composite configurations with wavy fibers confirm that nonlinear interlaminar shear stress-strain response enables accurate failure prediction. The problem of the presence of porosity and its influence on failure was noted. The second objective is to assess the ability to simulate initiation and propagation of matrix-ply cracking. Failure models for IM7/8552 carbon/epoxy tape open-hole tensile coupons are built and validated.

    A plm implementation for aerospace systems engineering-conceptual rotorcraft design

    The thesis will discuss the Systems Engineering phase of an original Conceptual Design Engineering Methodology for Aerospace Engineering-Vehicle Synthesis. This iterative phase is shown to benefit from digitization of Integrated Product&Process Design (IPPD) activities, through the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies. Requirements analysis through the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and 7 MaP tools is explored as an illustration. A "Requirements Data Manager" (RDM) is used to show the ability to reduce the time and cost to design for both new and legacy/derivative designs. Here the COTS tool Teamcenter Systems Engineering (TCSE) is used as the RDM. The utility of the new methodology is explored through consideration of a legacy RFP based vehicle design proposal and associated aerospace engineering. The 2001 American Helicopter Society (AHS) 18th Student Design Competition RFP is considered as a starting point for the Systems Engineering phase. A Conceptual Design Engineering activity was conducted in 2000/2001 by Graduate students (including the author) in Rotorcraft Engineering at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta GA. This resulted in the "Kingfisher" vehicle design, an advanced search and rescue rotorcraft capable of performing the "Perfect Storm" mission, from the movie of the same name. The associated requirements, architectures, and work breakdown structure data sets for the Kingfisher are used to relate the capabilities of the proposed Integrated Digital Environment (IDE). The IDE is discussed as a repository for legacy knowledge capture, management, and design template creation. A primary thesis theme is to promote the automation of the up-front conceptual definition of complex systems, specifically aerospace vehicles, while anticipating downstream preliminary and full spectrum lifecycle design activities. The thesis forms a basis for additional discussions of PLM tool integration across the engineering, manufacturing, MRO and EOL lifecycle phases to support business management processes.

    Investigation of the impact of turbine blade geometry on near-field microwave blade tip time of arrival measurements

    This study investigates the manifestation of geometric features of turbine blades in signatures of non-optical time of arrival (ToA) probes. The approach enables an evaluation of the various signal characteristics used for defining ToA for a range of airfoil geometries and provides knowledge about additional waveform characteristics. The objective of this research is to increase the accuracy of microwave ToA probes by gaining a better understanding of the microwave signals in five steps. Firstly, ToA definitions used in the past are compared. Considering accuracy, computational effort, and versatility, the constant fraction crossing definition is found to be the most accurate. Secondly, an experimental apparatus capable of measuring airfoil ToA with microwave probes and optical probes as a reference is designed and built. As a third step, a catalog of 16 turbine blade geometries is developed. Fourthly, the signatures of these turbine blades are acquired using both the optical and the microwave probes. Finally, the impact of the geometric effects on the signatures is evaluated. The quality of the microwave results is found to be highly dependent on the polarization of the microwaves. Analysis of the time domain signal shows that decreasing the blade width, increasing the chord angle, or incorporating a blade tip pocket or a varying cross-section leads to a decrease in the amplitude of the peak caused by the blade. Increasing the blade width and incorporating a chord angle leads to an increase in peak width. A frequency domain analysis is conducted on the microwave signals and verified using a synthetic signal. This analysis confirms the findings from the time domain analysis. The time domain analysis of the laser measurements shows that the spatial resolution of the laser is much higher than that of the microwave sensor. Consequently, the signal acquired with the optical setup provides a good means of defining the blade ToA. The knowledge gained in this study about the sensor and its interaction with passing blade tips of varying geometry can be used to enhance the understanding of microwave ToA measurements. This knowledge provides further insight into airfoil and engine health.

    A methodology for ballistic missile defense systems analysis using nested neural networks

    The high costs and political tensions associated with Ballistic Missile Defense Systems (BMDS) has driven much of the testing and evaluation of BMDS to be performed through high fidelity Modeling and Simulation (M&S). In response, the M&S environments have become highly complex, extremely computationally intensive, and far too slow to be of use to systems engineers and high level decision makers. Regression models can be used to map the system characteristics to the metrics of interest, bringing about large quantities of data and allowing for real-time interaction with high-fidelity M&S environments, however the abundance of discontinuities and non-unique solutions makes the application of regression techniques hazardous. Due to these ambiguities, the transfer function from the characteristics to the metrics appears to have multiple solutions for a given set of inputs, which combined with the multiple inputs yielding the same set of outputs, causes troubles in creating a mapping. Due to the abundance of discontinuities, the existence of a neural network mapping from the system attributes to the performance metrics is not guaranteed, and if the mapping does exist, it requires a large amount of data to be for creating a regression model, making regression techniques less suitable to BMDS analysis. By employing Nested Neural Networks (NNNs), intermediate data can be associated with an ambiguous output which can allow for a regression model to be made. The addition of intermediate data incorporates more knowledge of the design space into the analysis. Nested neural networks divide the design space to form a piece-wise continuous function, which allows for the user to incorporate system knowledge into the surrogate modeling process while reducing the size of a data set required to form the regression model. This thesis defines nested neural networks along with methods and techniques for using NNNs to relieve the effects of discontinuities and non-unique solutions. To show the benefit of the approach, these techniques are applies them to a BMDS simulation. Case studies are performed to optimize the system configurations and assess robustness which could not be done without the regression models.

    En route speed optimization for continuous descent arrival

    Continuous Descent Arrival (CDA) procedures have been shown to minimize the thrust required during landing, thereby reducing noise, emissions, and fuel usage for commercial aircraft. Thus, implementation of CDA at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world's busiest airport, would result in significant reductions in environmental impact and airline operating costs. The Air Transportation Laboratory at Georgia Tech, Delta Air Lines, and the local FAA facilities (Atlanta Center and Atlanta TRACON) collaborated to design CDA procedures for early morning arrivals from the west coast. Using the Tool for Analysis of Separation and Throughput (TASAT), we analyzed the performance of various aircraft types over a wide range of weights and wind conditions to determine the optimum descent profile parameters and to find the required spacing between aircraft types at a fixed metering point to implement the procedure. However, to see the full benefits of CDA, these spacing targets must be adhered, lest there will be a loss in capacity or negation of the noise, emissions, and fuel savings benefits. Thus a method was developed to determine adjustments to cruise speeds while aircraft are still en route, to achieve these spacing targets and to optimize fleet wide fuel burn increase. The tool in development, En route Speed Change Optimization Relay Tool (ESCORT), has been shown to solve the speed change problem quickly, incorporating aircraft fuel burn information and dividing the speed changes fairly across multiple airlines. The details of this tool will be explained in this thesis defense. Flight tests were conducted in April-May of 2007, where it was observed that the spacing targets developed by TASAT were accurate but that delivery of these aircraft to the metering point with the desired spacing targets was very challenging without automation. Thus, further flight tests will be conducted in 2008 using the en route spacing tool described above to validate the improvement it provides in terms of accurately delivering aircraft to the metering point.

    Self-configuring ad-hoc networks for unmanned aerial systems

    Currently there is ongoing research in the field of Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANET) for several different scenarios. Research has focused on topology related challenges such as routing mechanisms or addressing systems, as well as security issues like traceability of radio communication or encryption. In addition, there are very specific research interests such as the effects of directional antennas for MANETs or optimized transmission techniques for minimal power consumption or range optimization. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in general, need wireless systems in order to communicate. Current UAS are very flexible and allow for a wide spectrum of mission profiles by means of utilizing different UAVs, according to the requirements at hand. Each mission poses special needs and requirements on the internal and external UAS communication and special mission scenarios calling for UAV swarms increase the complexity and require specialized communication solutions. UAS have specific needs not provided by the general research, but are, on the other hand, to diversified to make much use of narrowly focused developments; UAS form a sufficiently large research area for application of MANETs to be considered as an independent group with specialized needs worthy of tailored implementations of MANET principles. MANET research has not tackled a general approach to UAS although some sources show specific applications involving UAVS. This work presents some new aspects for the development of of ad-hoc wireless networks for UAVs and UAS and focuses on their specialties and needs. A general framework for MANET development is proposed. Furthermore, the proposed specific evaluation scenarios provide for a UAS focused comparison of MANET performance.
