Enabling Curiosity’s Safe Landing: Engineering at its Finest

In the past decade, NASA’s robotic explorers have opened our eyes to the scientific beauty and dynamic complexity of our solar system. We have found intriguing evidence for water and just begun to understand the implications for life on Mars and on three outer planet moons (Europa, Titan and Enceladus). We have returned pristine samples of a comet that could hold clues to the formation of the solar system and the Earth within it. We have sent robotic spacecraft to Mercury and onward towards Pluto, exploring the extreme environments of our solar system.

Making the Next Generation Air Transportation System A Reality

Air transportation is a vital component of the global socio-economic infrastructure. When measured by value, over 40% of the worlds good are transported by air. Your computer, smart phone, and tablet were most probably transported by air at some point between when they were manufactured and they were purchased. Air transportation is the reason that you can click a button on your computer, smart phone, or tablet screen today and receive the item you purchased tomorrow. Without air transportation the rapid prototyping and just in time supply chain paradigms that underpin our modern economy would not be possible. In addition to the aforementioned economic activity and connectivity, air transportation also enables greater levels of societal connectivity. Families and friends are able to stay personally connected across vast distances because they are able to see each other much more frequently than they would without air transportation.

Message from the Chair

Dear AE Community:
The 2012-2013 academic year has started and we are seeing lots of familiar faces back again and the new faces of our freshman class.  According to information we received in July, we have 237 freshmen this fall, with 18% of them women.  The median GPA of the freshman class is 3.97; the median SAT score (from those who reported their scores) is 2000.  It appears we have a talented group of students, once again.

We’ve hired three new faculty members who you can read more about in this edition of AE-enews, along with the marvelous contribution of Prof. Bobby Braun and the Space Systems Design Lab to the Mars Exploration Project that you no doubt have heard about in the national news.

We would love to be informed of happenings in your lives that you would like us to know about or would like to share with the Georgia Tech AE community.  We will be happy to post your news on our website and also have a LinkedIn site for AE Alumni and Friends Network (LinkedIN).

All of us here in AE at Georgia Tech send our best wishes for whatever you are involved in this Fall and look forward to our continuing and growing contact with you.

Warmest regards,

Vigor Yang

In Memorium Edward W. Price, Regents' Professor Emeritus

Regents’ Professor Emeritus Edward Warren Price, a world renowned expert in the fields of solid propellants combustion and solid propellants rockets passed away on June 11, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 91.

Ed, as he was known by his friends and colleagues, was born on December 6, 1920 in Pontiac, Michigan. He was raised in an impoverished homestead located in the “Apache Country” in the Arizona desert in a single room home now known as the Landmark Stafford Cabin near Faraway Ranch. The home and the ranch have since been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in what is now part of the Chiricahua National Park and Wilderness Area. Ed and his family were allowed to live on this property by its kind owners in exchange for light work. This act of generosity strongly impacted Ed’s outlook on life, prompting him to be kind to those around him for the remainder of his life.
