[00:01:26] Good writing my name is less well I'm Dana Bligh Barrie here at Georgia and I'd like to welcome you to our all 2020 kick off the podium the interaction a problem and at Tommy and the digital age this symposium was supposed to be the inaugural of Bill and the scholars of that network in our newly renovated ice Albert library which opened this semester while I'm disappointed that you are not getting our you know. [00:02:00] I am thrill that over 260 people have registered for this. We are honored that you have joined us for this Virtual Symposium and we are excited to share the research and expertise of our Georgia Tech faculty who look at privacy through a variety of lenses I am also pleased to welcome librarian Privacy Act of this and library Freedom Project founder Allison McLean a who is the liver the keynote address tomorrow so please come back to here for I was just thank the library's public programming team and the planning South committee of Katherine Mansi a mate Doshi Jason for Jody Thompson Ken Sheldon Kimberly Golar Stubbs and Professor Peter Swire from the sheller College of this for all of their efforts in putting together what promises to be a great Symposium the Georgia Tech library is committed to sharing scholarly followership openly and freely with our community that is our community at Georgia Tech our community in Atlanta and the state the larger community of librarians and archivists all over the world as well as our global community so please enjoy the symposium at this time I would like to turn it over to my library colleague a mate she director of innovation and program design and subject librarian for the school of public policy and law here at Georgia Tech thank you thanks Leslie that's the theme of arson posy m. it's related to privacy and autonomy in the digital age why this theme and why now freedom of intellectual inquiry is a fundamental value for all libraries and it's codified in the American Library Association library Bill of Rights. [00:04:08] The document reads that quote the right to privacy includes the right to open inquiry without having the subject of one's interest examined or scrutinized by others whether in person or online article 3 of the code dates that confidentiality extends to quote information sought or received and resources consulted borrowed acquired or transmitted the encroachments upon these rights results in a chilling effect on one of our most fundamental human needs the instinct to search for information or knowledge and for understanding as socio technological change compels an even coerces entire societies to communicate work and play online we in the library recognize a need to interrogate the emerging norms of privacy and autonomy in the digital age this is undoubtedly complex multi-dimensional terrain it ignores disciplinary boundaries and thus requires intersubjective perspectives to gain a more complete understanding it's our hope that the scholar sharing their expertise at the Suppose am will shed more light on this important topic on behalf of the library we thank you for joining us and now our libraries public programming library and Kathryn Mansi will introduce our speakers or today and also demonstrate how you can be involved with this today some Hosea thanks so much thanks to me welcome everyone are really excited to have you join us for this.
