Fran and Eric Gebhardt, AE '90, Make Gift to AE

Fran and Eric Gebhardt, AE '90, have made a commitment to the School of Aerospace Engineering to support the Fran and Eric Gebhardt Distinguished Lecture series.  The Gebhardt Lecture Series is intended to recognize leading experts worldwide who will share their prospects and visions on how to shape aerospace education and research in the future.  The primary audience will be aerospace engineering faculty and graduate students in our School who work within and across a wide range of disciplinary areas including structures, controls, propulsion, fluid dynamics, design, and systems engineering.

Patterned directional sensors for efficient monitoring of structural health

Aircrafts, railroads, bridges and pipelines are just a few examples of structures where cracks, corrosion, or damage due to impacts and similar events can lead to catastrophic failure. Automated early detection and localization of damage is the aim of Structural Health Monitoring. Professor Massimo Ruzzene from the Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering and the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and other researchers, have developed a novel acoustic transducer which enables smart, directional scanning of structural components by means of guided waves, as described in this overview. The unique capabilities of the transducer rely on the unique patterning of the electrodes, which are defined by a spiral and in the wavenumber domain. This multidisciplinary research encompasses disparate fields, including wave theory, signal processing, and microfabrication techniques. For more information, contact Professor Massimo Ruzzene (ruzzene@gatech.edu, 404-894-3078), or visit http://www.ruzzene.gatech.edu/research/FSAT/index.html.

In Memorium Professor William T. Mikolowsky

The AE School lost a great teacher and colleague with the passing of Professor William T. Mikolowsky on Tuesday, July 24, 2012. As the Professor of the Practice, he touched the lives of many generations of our undergraduate students through his capstone senior design sequence, Intro to AE, and vehicle performance classes. His lectures were peppered with inspiring examples from his distinguished career at Lockheed as the Chief Engineer for the C-130 J program.

Prof. Bobby Braun and Former AE Prof. John Olds Announce Operation of Terminal Velocity Aerospace, LLC

Prof. Bobby Braun and former AE faculty John Olds announced the operation of Terminal Velocity Aerospace, LLC (TVA) (see http://tvaero.com) recently. This newly formed Georgia business, co-founded by Bobby and John, provides atmospheric reentry services to enhance safety and promote the utilization of outer space. TVA offers small Re-Entry Devices (RED) designed for unprecedented data collection during reentry breakup and for return of small payloads from space.
