The June 2014 edition of the Georgia Tech AE e-newsletter

It must be the summertime at AE.

The hallways, walks, and labs are sometimes full, sometimes empty – as faculty, researchers, and students pursue challenges that take them all over the world.

For Professor Dewey Hodges, the challenge has taken him to San Francisco, Beijing, and Seoul, where he has delivered the American Helicopter Society's 2014 Alexander A. Nikolsky Honorary Lecture.

Three other faculty – Brian Gunter, David Spencer, and Panagiotis Tsiotras – are on NASA-supported research fellowships at Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Our students are likewise quite busy.

AE undergraduate Nana Obayashi is spending the summer in Paris, where she is studying language for business and technology.

AE doctoral student (and NSF scholar) Johnny L. Worthy is working as an engineer at MIT’s Lincoln Labs, where he also worked last summer.

And several students joined Dr. Stephen Ruffin at the 11th Annual International Planetary Probe Workshop held at CalTech, where they presented papers and networked with other aspiring researchers.

But the Atlanta campus is hardly quiet

There has been a steady stream of bright, engaging students filling our labs and classrooms -- high schoolers attending programs like ASDL’s STEP, and IPLE’s TEAM enrichment camps. We've even been visited by students enrolled in ASTRO, a camp organized by AE alumnus Dr. John Bradford.

We hope, someday, these young people will join us. Meanwhile, we’ll take inspiration from their energy and ambition as we prepare for the 2014-15 academic year.

AIAA Conference comes to
Georgia Tech's backyard

AE students, staff, faculty, and alumni participated in more than 70 sessions during the 2014 AIAA Aviation Conference, held in Atlanta, June 16-20. Take a moment to enjoy this photo album from the week's activities.

One of those participants, graduate student Zachary Putnam received the Best Student Paper Award for his work on "Extension and Enhancement of the Allen-Eggers Analytic Solution for Ballistic Entry Trajectories." Read Putnam's abstract now.

One of the more active participants in Aviation 2014 was AE alumnus Steven Justice, director of the Georgia Center of Innovation for Aerospace. Read more about his commitment to aerospace.
