The co-directors of that center want to have many familiar faces out there. So as many of you know one of the one of our central mandates will is to really remove the role of international affairs and science technology and that nexus of the world not only in the classroom scholars but to the local community and we're very pleased today to be able to do that we have been delighted to be able to introduce today to you today is Peter who is the Taiwanese representatives of the United States has a song. Mr Jason won and today he is going to speak on the really the state of the U.S. Taiwanese relations. Not only as it exists today but looking into the future. I think with the stock it's really looking at the Partnership for change twenty percent. So sort of looking beyond that to most was a period we find ourselves in with the financial crisis number of regional tensions in Asia changing governments both in Taiwan and United States. So there's a lot of uncertainty today both in both countries by themselves and certainly in their interactions with each other and the region and so there's really no better person to speak on these issues than our speakers today and let me also express gratitude. Not only to our speaker for coming down to Atlanta and meeting with us but to the take office here and to recognize our consul general song for thank you kind of a homecoming for me because eight or nine years ago I was caught then as someone who had a. Maybe a future in this in international relations to go to time is hosted there and really was presented a very enlightening experience and set of interactions with a range of officials scholars policymakers aren't really provided an indelible mark for someone who had really been mired in Eurasia Russia or in other parts of the world and so many ways I feel like I'm paying a debt that is eight years old and being able to host this event and. And before I do. I'd also like a recognizable of the people in the audience. One is the representatives of the consular staff here in in Atlanta and also my colleague Bill Long who's the chair of the salmon School of International Affairs and I see a number of my colleagues here as well. So really without further ado I'd like to introduce to you today excellent see who is no stranger to the United States. He has been based in Washington for a number of years he was he really saw the evolution of the Taiwanese institutional relationship with the United States really since did the senators and evolve from and ask them to see the relationship to consular relations of the most recent take up institutional relationship and he has served in many capacities of his government and working with the United States served. Actually as a liaison to the Congress and and I dare say he knows much more about making sausage in American politics than most of us here in the room but that's not a topic at hand today and he also served in in Panama. And Canada as well. So he brings a wealth of experience as a diplomat and student that asked for this relationship and there's really no one better to be able to talk to us today about how to navigate some of the uncertainties in the in the relationship times in our history here today is excellent. So thanks a lot. Professor Steinberg for your food for his production. And the chairman they did gentleman. I'm a very purpose to the invited to here to judge a type tack. The reason I say this because I thought about this for many many years finally ended the end of the ship from my colleague Larry where be able to come over here to talk to you. For good two reasons. I want to come to George attack. Number one I vividly remember one nine hundred sixty six sixty five that. I was paid that kept off the high life. I hate that my wife named the Maggie. Sorry to say she she she saw that beautiful or more there. Nearby the hotel risk card to so as you said well enough OP your speech so she just started to shop. You better self. But anyhow that time they did her and try to impress her family and her older sister oldest sister. They did a guy named Also Bill. And so the parents didn't know you know you know because of their never met each other they dated here in the United States in New Jersey. So they said although chasing you. You give us some advice. Why my daughter one that they did this this this boy and the Sims they were very serious. So I looked it over I said it will be wrong. Father said Why from Judge attack. Of course. So this is how I'll be married they married for forty some years now and they restarted in Washington D.C. and two sisters the they love each other and my brother in law. He is so proud of himself to be educated here ended up working in Pentagon for many many years just retired recently. This is the first first reason I want to come and besides the judge attack Taiwan is a very popular. Heather that took a there almost a year twice a year. A lot of our W. people. You know those engineers or graduate here. Second good reason. Dr Steinberg mainstream but I I was the Congress to liaise arm in Washington D.C. for many years from seventy four to one thousand nine hundred one. From the staff senior staff to deputy to director. So I was lucky to learn a lot of from both houses every office is kinda but I was so lucky to get to know seven not so. I started to replace because with him and it up take him to Taipei for a visit I read two beautiful course. For him was in this school. Course there's a Jack Nicklaus course but I brag about that. Mike or spears no comparison with him and he is just too good. So every time I try to get some pro to play with him at least somebody can be competitive to him so to come to the Center for Sam and I am extremely pleased. I haven't seen him for a while because he I think he retired from the Senate in ninety eight ninety six and that time I was the best. In Canada and then the best in Panama and so forth. So I hope someday I can get to see him and again. Renew the friendship. Today particularly when I may shoot about that yesterday or so so pleased to be invited to go to may come to join him for the Cherry Blossom Festival. Event I see the consul general from Great Britain he joined the US today. There for a whole day and we go with a both senators Senator ice axes and of the Chamberland standard Congressman. MARSHALL We had a great time we had a good parade there and this morning I had a chance to go to the state representative to me to we speak and or those representative I was also very pleased to be recognized by to speak on the floor and the human past very good the resolution to emphasize the thirty years of the Tower of Terror act to make sure the U.S. tire wire even waves out. Former diplomatic ties but the we steer enjoy some kind of official relationship. To make sure always like my status is between word bank and diplomatic court so we do enjoy the privilege and we do still have a license plate. You know you don't really have to pay the ticket but we try to behave ourselves. But anyhow I'd like to start with our relation with the judge or first George Gentile one. Our sister states and also with the sister. Cities most locally just Taipei in the eleventh. And in fact our current president a mighty Joe who was educated in New York University and G.S.T. of the harbor you're very city and who visited the len top three times when he was mayor of Taipei of our capital. Secondly Georgia and Taiwan have an enduring trade relationship and repressed robust economic partnership. TOWIE's Georgia. Thirteenth largest export market with total exports to Taiwan. In year two thousand and seven reaching four hundred twenty five million dollars. And thirdly approximately thirty thousand Toni's immigrants living in the great area making Georgia home to one of the largest towering these populations in. The United States. I had wonderful banquet with our most hundred to three hundred people or beast business leaders they or move over here more than twenty thirty even forty years and I'm very glad to help you with here raise their kids here they really very success for their business and the thing I heard from them. Yesterday I didn't know that is why your you know United States so big where you pick up a lento gas' you're the place for your business. He said you know. No you need works. So it do pretty well. I find that we have very close a government a government a relation is over the past five years twenty five state senators and representatives visit Taiwan. Your state church just has passed that the real resolution is supported Taiwan which quarter Resolution five five four which they presented that to me on the floor in the state legislature. So we very very proud of this kind of a relationship is very very unique like I said yesterday I talked to both senators and congressman or supported the new resolution bacteria Washing D.C. quarter Resolution fifty five. To reiterate how you point to our relations sacked to be able to have us and Taiwan continue this kind of a very close relationship. So so as you know partnerships based on our common values and interests fund. Mento part of both domestic politics and international relations for Thailand they says being a total tenant of our existence as an ton of most societies and the clear clearly our most important partnership over the years has been the one we have with the United States. For over sixty years Thailand the United States have enjoyed a strong political security and economic ties. Even when the United States switch. Diplomatic Relations recognition from Taipei to Beatty nine hundred seventy nine. The longstanding friendship between the people of the United States and to Taiwan. Remained so. So your problem was the relationship that the U.S. Congress saw fit to act what I just said the Terror Relations Act or we cored T. our aid which has endured for thirty years as the cornerstone of our by letter of Tice. The race. Unique commitment to peace and stability for Taiwan in the region. A lot Taiwan to develop into a full fast fledged democracy and dynamic economy that it is today. It has also provided a foundation for other accomplishment over the past three decades including accession to the World Trade Organization. Into a time when has joined the United States in addressing. Transnational and the global challenges as seen through our active engagement the human Terry relief measures. Public health and diverse Environmental Protection Unit tariffs and the financial market stabilizing efforts Tehran has also. Contributed to us come to terrorise and Jen. In the past few years participating in programs like the come ten a security initiative and as the largest public donor to the Pentagon Memorial Fund. To be honest effort spread to previous government in Taipei even past eight years. Seriously challenging our relationship. Across the Taiwan street justice Beijing's approach was acceptable to Taiwan. Efforts were met with equal pretty stubborn resistance from the other side adding the cross street ten shoes and a straining our partnership with the United States for much of the past decade. Despite this diplomatic challenges the people of Taiwan have always recognized that their political and economic future requires and Gates meant with the world with the goal of strengthening partnerships that allow them to maintain the active room to let wrote discourse and commercial relations. In the West with the spirit of engagement that our new president Dr my Joe took office mate of last year he has well he has brought a new approach to Taiwan's foreign policy one that seeks to reduce costs treat. Attention. Well. Simian tenuously rate is going to retain their historical partnership between Taipei and Washington. In essence he has replaced an approach that some kind of the right to confrontation know with the wind that he has. Court. Diplo plumb a sea of the possible. This new approach has already proven effective in a matter of just a few months we have taken major strides with the US government to re S. The foolish. Really establish new mutual trust our office shows have engaged in a new and a focused dialogue on a range. RIDGE of issues highlight and by our presidents dialogue with the several American political leaders do in a tense stop in kind of for the. Last August time really has been removed from America's special three watch list after you improving its Internet to property rights protection is allowing us to overcome and obstacle to negotiate. Toward free trade agreement Russian ten approved. You know last October it. October third large scale still Taiwan that well I'm into our defensive capabilities. The first approval office kind over eight years that number was six point five billion U.S. dollars. Even with this accomplishment not wearing government is my government's new approach more evident they Impreza mosse efforts to forge a new partnership with Beijing. We have produced some important rewrites here as well we haven't resumed consultations on the basis of the one nine hundred ninety two consensus. After a ten year hiatus. Going to China commenced on December fifteenth to eight regular director charter flights which seem MORE THEN hundred flights each direction. Every week with this initiative those sixty yeara no direct links has come to an end. We have a great. I mean direct to shipping links between sixty three Chinese ports and eleven and tower and use ports saving menus meaning soft dollars in a necessary cost per year and a facilitating cross street comer commerce that benefits both sides of the Chapmans have included a visit by two groups from it in China. And the easing of or it restrictions on capital flows and the cross street investment and a new. Food safety measures so. Yet despite this progress we have not seen food embrace. I thought our new agenda by Beijing even particularly. Would mean for participation in the United Nations specialized agencies like the World Health Organization but we are beginning to see some encouraging signs signs at the APEC forum in last November telling US envoy from from a vice president Lee and then met with Chinese President Hu Jintao. To discuss the possibility of Taiwan I'm joined a word health Embley observer. This would be a world come first step on the road to Taiwan's broader participation in W.H.O.. In a speech on December thirty first. Last year President Hu Jintao expressed a desire to find a way for a time when to participate in international organizations and to raise the prospect of a security end to military talks with Taiwan that could lead to peace agreement. This two developments offer hopes that our new approach total baking will pay dividends even to commie months and years when I did Clearly differing perspectives entirely when regarding the development of cross trade relations the majority of the people approve of the government's stance and effect efforts. Especially given the progress made to date this with the people who support President Ma is determined to maintain a constructive approach in dealing with Beijing. Because a new course for Taiwan is imperative. If we are to continue thriving in this repeatedly changing world. I'd like to conclude that I hope our new approach would also help build the confidence between Beijing and Washington for edging up bilateral partnership between the two. Remains and during challenge with the potential to impede progress in many other areas including those of importance to Taiwan. With the security issues surrounding North Korea. And resolved human rights. Criteria a Met Internet for property protection is still being questioned and allegations of currency manipulation continue to be issued much. Work remains to be done in a and we hope that the surprises that occurred in the past. Among Washington Taipei and Beijing become last common and that opportunities for when we scenario become more mention about to this end. Might come in the looks forward to working closely with the new Obama administration. Like president President Obama has made clear that he will be seeking new answers to questions that have studied that governments in the past it's worth noting that almost the cement tenuously the people of both Taiwan and the United States half demand it changes seeing our approach to governing and our I look I mean international affairs and our government not responding. As we look to the future. When where come stop to new to you to continue partnership with America but eventually our common values. I think the my quest see and a market economy and serves as a beacon for others who share the same as spirit shoes. Thank you very much. Thank you. Because excellence she is graciously expressed willingness to everybody's questions. The floor is yours. But let me start this second. You had mentioned that you were hopeful in working with the Obama administration I was wondering how we have been sort of consumed with our most recent election and the financial crisis but what side types of signals is Washington sending that. Business might not be as usual and there are some opportunities for changing. Thank you for the question I think it is very very important particularly after November the fourth after your election in me as the chief representative that there are mission was very clear see how can we foresee a very smooth transition between the Bush administration and Obama administration and that we have very very glad. Like I mentioned in my speech. I'll talk to the third was the time Bush administration after eighty years finally notified to Congress to sell us six point five billion US dollars arms sales which makes sure we do have capability to defend ourselves instead of always bad American boys the fight for us street and that also was a very clear message from Republican administration to the Democratic home mystery sheet to Obama and also that was in the blessing of Paul with Obama's people and the McCann's people to precede this notification to the U.S. Congress so that shows the continuity between us and Taiwan arms sales the place that we we we have very very glad. Last year. March twenty second. My new president at my age you know he didn't receive come graduate three message from Obama as a candidate that time but more than that May twentieth hour even argue ratio. Obama sent a special envoy on his behalf to go to Taipei to handed over very substance letter to President mighty Joe to not only Congress to lead him again but more importantly he agreed. With what to mine. Joe's new policy think about improving relations cross street and he said that will decrease the Tahsin of time history it will be easier for United States Taiwan China. We worked together for when we situation so Thirdly in August after after the during the Democratic convention. I was there with several of our of our senators and deputy speaker of our L.-Y. our Congress and they were very very pleased first time me many years Democrat Party platform. Really late teen foreign policy particularly in Taiwan they first time put our relations act into the language say we want abide tarnation is that to conduct U.S. Taiwan relations of course Republican side the mechanics camp the same team talk about our nation's act so I gave you those examples you were see particularly on Tower he sure maybe there's a solid continuity and you can see during the campaign for debates between McCain and Obama. They never picked it up but China as each issue to debate each other in other words they understand now and did. Bush administration seems to take on U.S. policy on Taiwan and China get the AT call from the Democrat mystery sheet and press that. Secretary Secretary Hillary Clinton before she left for Japan and China Indonesia. We got a very clear message she you want to come Bay that down the road they United States will abide this act continue to sell us defensive weapon new research and the continue to promote our cultural economic relations and after their trip and during your trip she reiterated several times public. OK she's so or your so far we are very optimistic encouraged. But unfortunately the cabinet level almost to come for now but septuplets the key people like as a secretary level people nominates a State Department Department defense national security console they still need some time to work out good neighbors even though we knew Who are some good names with experience in the former Clinton mystery she will be in place but still you're not being announced it. So we want to be patient. We want to continue this kind of a close relationship between now and us. Yes. You know. Mastic you always says a problem because you're talking about you think a sheen talk on body is some people say well I would be independent for so many years. We should be independent as a republic Taiwan. For example a group of people and some people said well we're all the same blood. We all come from the same place no matter whole Only you come to Taiwan they come from China you come from the mainland three hundred years ago or two hundred years ago or twenty years ago. So it's always the debate potentially politically way you run for big office like the presidency. You always try to find something different to attract people. So this is a wide to answer your question. This time after eighty years people suffer on this talent independence issue. So this why. This time. Mind you got elected less light on political theory particularly on this huge issue but the minute you take a very moderate tone on that he said to the wrote My policy is a dumb idea to ship. No unification no independence is no use of force in other words he feels strongly to give the message to our American friends. We don't want to be a trouble maker. We want to be a peacemaker. We know Tao and St Louis flash point in the world very complicated. We know. China is too big for us a small island but we don't want a war and we don't want. Like I said before American friends send their boys to fight for us. Time is treated like one thousand nine hundred six Clinton said two elk with carriers to tie why St try to protect. His safety and the so this is why he said we should set aside this kind of very sensitive that like it. Issue is that we should focus on good things on trade on tourism on things. Able to the world be MUP both twenty three million people in Taiwan and one point three billion people in China and to be able to have a closer ties with United States. Betters sympathy from United States. So he said. Said that US right. Right now. I don't want to talk about unification. I don't want to talk about independence and this generation may be spare for me talk sign eventually sign a peace agreement and to let sixty years from now hundred years from now for the younger generation to decide where we want to go either the status quo or unification or independence is ask you to buy yourself. I love my life. And we're like my. My you are right. I'm born right here. Right. What you love. Thank you very much welcome back. Like I said away just for a lift from that three or less watch list. We were very very proud of that because we're tries so hard to cover the year just. Speed highway you know that and to be honest with your official records we tell a nice invest it. Or you vest team in China more than two hundred fifty billion U.S. dollars is a big big number two hundred fifty billion U.S. dollars so intellectual property theme of course is so important. This is why mine Joe didn't know President he said we have to have a more dialogue with many China. We have to get our north heart to two minute China. We have to let them know right. We practise the democracy we have to let them understand this Internet or popular use do you somebody else for your own benefit is not good. So this will take time because I may see about about that one point three billion people you know a huge country is bigger than the United States even so it takes time but we're confident because we invest so much money there. We have so many people there to try to educate the people there to see don't buy Let the this kind of be a particular worldwide. Way that. We weigh what we hope is so on there. But as you know just mission about new administration and certainly because of financial crisis because it came out because the downturn per tactless. Is there in the United States. So this is why you heard by America. Da da da. And we are realistic. We know you don't want to push. Too much certain issues which may not be that easy but we think it's important eventual F.D.A. between time to us is good to both sides. So we think about to address so Court T five to phase a kind of framework agreement between time in the US like like block by block or gradually hopefully down the road. We can have to kind of agreement signed by us and Taiwan. We don't have a time table yet we hope and believe it. Leadership and my age or we can conclude something. Next Four Years. I keep on telling people I said well the reason I personally was so optimistic on Taiwan and things and to the leaders of my mind you know I keep on telling people talk about their world leaders are you talk about George W. Bush before leaving he tried to educate people his legacy and there he's eighty years presidency of the same thing leaders other countries. So I look at it like you mention but they sharpie look at the door leaders of the past leaders in Maine and their leader of course about say don't they can see there. He created a let legend because he found the People's Republic China in one nine hundred forty nine and then they shot pm after those kind of a cultural revolution and so forth they Sharpy create that kind of economic reform which impressed everybody there in many China and then. Me gentlemen who didn't do much bet. But his name will be in the history because this leadership. He got hung Kong and Macau back. For China know who is in power. What he can do next four years. Four years left to right. Four and a half so he has to think about some kind of the legacy for leadership. So for economy very difficult the now are you to take a financial crisis. So I think I guess it his mind if he can soft the problem. Taiwan. He can soft problem to bat that would be a legacy. But we all know that he cannot have a solution except peace corps except use you you live together. Piece forty. So this is why we think it's a very smart. If he pursued that piece of agreement between Taiwan and mainland there would be a good step forward particularly can decrease on the leadership particularly we already have this kind of a positive gesture to manage China and if there is a peace accord. If we already open up the tourism trade and so forth all obviously you know because of the cultural background because the tradition is easier for town east doing business in each China. It will help each other for Chinese trade and and Taiwan Strait. Order their project. Second considering. Ours. This is a very good question and you know like I said. Many China such a huge country even though. Hu Jintao and the leadership when job out of the half their wisdom to see done their role worldwide. They want to show people they are peace loving people a country. They want to show they try to be nice to the neighbors more neighbor country like Taiwan. But it's a big bureaucracy. This is why you saw recently their their aircraft their ships follow your your civilians. Ships. In the South China Sea and which. Young just so therefore minister that time it was seen in Washington D.C. He was totally caught by surprise. He didn't even know. So in other words. Big bureaucracy either foreign affairs or military they do not necessarily follow the line. From leadership. So what to answer your question Embassy two embassy my office and P.R.C. Embassy there are some people there very friendly. Some people they stay a stereotype and that I think were take time for our side of my Consul General here myself my colleague because we enjoy this kind of freedom and democracy order time even before. Mind you become the president we don't mind to open up completely with Embassy people well as the best of the Ottawa. I always conduct the conversation with P.R.C. embassy people at best and so forth. So it will take time. Harlow. So well get the guy lying down to order bureaucrats to talk to one point three billion that's that's a live a difficult but do we have confidence that you're talking about of Treasury. You mean they bought those bonds from the United States. I don't worry at all or I tell you what China number one right. Foreign reserve. We're now on the birth three the bird three or number four in the world. Number three. So to speak money. But you know where we put the money you know look. All right. You know if you're right this collapse. We're going to collapse if you collapse. China will collapse first because or there are foreign service us. Only partially E.U. Europe. You know many people say the E.U. dollar is strong. But always Steerforth majority in in the United States. So so you're read newspapers say if you're for China say all the bonds. You know is this going to sink. Us into this thing first. They won't do it. Or. Well. He he made it very very clear to the public in Taiwan or his friends he said I want to be. The president of the river China Taiwan. I never want to be the governor of Taiwan. So that made it very very clear. He is not that that is not a cup of tea for him to lead to be merged or really unified with China particularly in the communism system so we started dialogue with that with China. Maybe number one because he is a realistic number two and the courage would of us either show. For last few years but take three. I do in the campaign George W. Bush in coaching us to open dialogue with many China. You cannot ignore the huge market there. So for the two or the door with a minute. China doesn't mean I I started from the bikini we opened door to men in China not to be people for us to be closer to United States not to distance from the United States. This is very very important. This is why we said very clearly we have to negotiate with strength is. What is the strength of our military capability. This is why we don't mind request it spent eleven billion dollars worth of to purchase a man. American. Weapon nurse because we think the only country. It's reliable is the friend to Taiwan from the Western world. That's the United States. We had it. We had to experience. I don't know if you remember in eighty's we are one handed we tried to buy more F. sixteen S from you and we never got approval and at that time of the former president he tried to maneuver him B T So we purchased some Neeraj from friends and you can buy their rights from France easily you can buy F. sixteen from the United States eventually but think about the pipeline think of a logistics think about the treaty me and you have to have a reliable partner like United States. So there is no doubt. Particularly like a minute you're well educated here and the practice law in New York City for two years and there is no way whatsoever. We want to distance ourselves from his days. As a place. We we try to have some kind of relation with Russia. So we set up office they're very similar to the office in Washington D.C. but not that close with the United States and they get to Vittie very limited. Very limited maybe on trade matters yes but are the themes that because Russia still provides a lot of weapon to China and they they still consider China. Their big brothers and but the good thing. Of course the. Sort of office in Taipei We set of all forseen in Russia. We do have some business going on but. There is no way. Between us and Russia between us and the United States we steer consider like me a graduate from my Naval Academy. I was training your naval academy sixty seven sixty eight for electronics for a computer science for control and so forth so deeply our mind is easier for us to deal with American friends than anybody else in the world. Archer's gene not that much like I said that we invest so much money there. And this is another reason why Mind you wanted to have a direct trade in direct trade with that mainland give you an example we do or trade through Hong Kong through a single poor through Japan and if I have enough money to open office there hire ten thousand the workers there. I I wouldn't dare using my name. I have a professor as a chairman of my company to stick his neck out to say I form a company. Cord. Jason's company but I'm the chairman. But he doesn't have to do it if he. We do or would it. Detail work because cultural tradition is easier for us to communicate with Chinese but in case there's a dispute in case there's a problem and we have American friends to be the chairman of my company. This is what a. We practiced for years but now we open up before we give you example from Taipei to Shanghai. We have to go to Hong Kong and to Shanghai takes eight and a half hours today from Taipei to Shanghai eighty minutes direct flight. So I don't mind to open up the office there and my name as a chairman. So this is hard. We Talk About You mean inflows to China. You sound tragedy are others and no we hopefully. We have more exchange on that we hope eventually. It's year easier because we know that China. We used to be the number one foreign student in the United States. But now China may be the number one and that we were in this past twenty years I don't know your back there are some of them maybe from China and so many students they well educated here. The went back to China they grow up the venture world being leadership that kind of infamous is impeccable that kind of influence. You cannot stop this is how the influence of the in from your city influence to Taiwan our caplet ninety nine percent educated here in the United States including myself. So so this kind of a bond a tie very difficult to to set apart. This is a beautiful question that this is why my Joe He he he tries so hard in one month he tries so many theories. Not only just rebuild the trust between us. Ty why not only open the door with. Made in China and we're important. Just like you said he doesn't want to be marching nice Taiwan doesn't want to be marginalized. OK this number plus one plus two plus three eventually will be isolated because they're going to add to Japan and China and others and that what can we do we cannot compete with totally cannot compete among our neighbors. So this is why he has some of his so easy to try to have this come a so-called act far Economic Corporation. Framework Agreement with many China and why he wants to do this because we talk about the ideology they said why he surrendered to many China why you signed this kind of agreement with China. There's a good reason. The reason we wanted the sign this act with China down the road as soon as possible because we talked to the neighboring countries like Singapore like others Malaysia. They said we'll be glad to sign here with you would be glad to include the you in our organization but unfortunately big obstacle is management. They always say no. So we're small country with a curse to many China where we don't want to offend them. If you have some kind of agreement with minute would be more they happy to open up right away. So this act of five feet. If we sign it not just toward mainland basic as toward our neighboring countries like Singapore and others. What was the question. You know Tony it's not stupid to wear pretty smart because you know R D R D It will cost you a ton of money for example when we took advantage if we buy F. sixteen from us. Our technology our Ph D. is in Taiwan. Educated here in the United States for the past thirty years we do have a know how to build our own defensive weapon areas. Even Think of the long term range. That range missiles but the question this. You have to have a huge satellite industry to build your own strong to face and if we want to use those to. High tack on other business on trade. Instead we buy from us because you already spent billion billion dollars to do the R D F sixteen or on. F. twenty two or on other military equipment we safe that a lot is that we just purchased some equipment which make sure we can't do you defend that island. We don't we're not going to invade to many China this very pragmatic. So we all we wanted to show the world is we try to have our strong defense capability to defend ourselves in the meantime we have a big brother United States. They watch very closely because after all we are the beacon of democracy in particular Asia and the world. So to answer your question yes we do some R. D. but that we are not interested in build a big strong defense in Taiwan is that we want a strong enough to defend Taiwan. That island. If there's anything we can do. Of course we would like but I think U.S. side already in good hands. They have a new envoy they're trying to deal with North Korea and we make no bones out of it you want to deal with North Korea career you better have have some kind of a dialogue with many China to make sure the in between they try to help the peace internationally. Like I said anything we can do or be helped but are we just too small to help this important issue at this point the more this is you're seeing it so clearly this is why I mind your nose the obstacle there you know we want to more visibility internationally and fortunately you have a began to me there across trees watch you when you want to tack you or any time of the. Could and a fortune and we have a like I said Big Brother United States or so watch very closely for us. So like this. W.H.Y. eighteen we try to have a more visibility internationally and and with the understanding. Like I mentioned a way never think about to evade China China where we're never where we are or where one and this kind of a leadership would be peace forty with a mini China and we should have more international room. Otherwise you know time goes by will shrink smaller in the smaller it's already a small island the smallest one and then you disappear. We have to work very hard on international community. You're talking about promote peace and others. This is the this is the the what we can do I mention about food safety. Between us we signed an agreement with them know that they are in Taiwan. Whatever you see from many China. Food no menace T.N.I. this. We don't eat. Because you know how they do it. Some people you think the tea and those tea leaves. They put and the descendants to to try it and put it back to the teak tea box and the seller again resell it. You know you've got this kind of people they don't have quality they just do this and that the government is just too big so we try to educate them. We try to educate our our friends their business people you don't do that when it's your ruin your reputation and nobody is going to buy your stuff. So recently today I didn't bring that with me that Kenyans hard long. I don't know if you heard this. This one of our tea company in Taiwan. They point mountains at the mountains to the mainland. To grow T.V.'s OK. Recently I got a box a box like this. I showed to my wife the box made by rosewood just like like a jury box or ladies love it because I use it as a jury box inside only three packs of teas and that yes I mean green and high mountain tea but once you consume that three small keep tea bags. This is a beautiful beautiful jewelry box. And only cost us buy it. Thirty dollars and keep US dollars and that look like at least one hundred fifty dollars people rose to it. This is how we should educate many Chinese you do business quantity is important quality is even more important particularly for people to eat. You know everybody when we see it is that maybe where maybe Taiwan. Yes We Can you did made in China you has a tate because milk. Other theories meet and that need to be educated but we have to have a have a breakthrough have to reach out to the international world that is tough part we are trying very hard and this leadership. We have time for one last question of you sir thank you. Whenever we have a presentation these days. Read newspapers receive energy all over the year in the United States of course in Europe and Asia. Where there's growing concerns about. Import and hydrocarbons East Asian Jenn. The same time we see that countries have very different definitions of what energy security means have. Restless and I was wondering if you would share your thoughts on I want their current energy situation and how they are trying to redress the dependency I do carbons and alter it. Yes This president he tried so hard. So this is why when he tried to I heard that Cherie's trying to lead a delegation to go to Taiwan on solar energy and. The past administration. Because there are mentalist they resent that to so we already had a corporate issue with US companies for I don't know. I forgot how many. Big how many billion dollars to build our number fourth. Nuclear power plant but it was almost killed by the former's I mean the pressure of the environment and idea locked but finally we resume that because you know we have no choice. RUTH We don't have enough power plant hydraulic power play and fire power plant and but but. Ever mental issue is so important particularly in democratic country. So you have to face. To the direction one is are you going to do it another hand you have to face today a better Mentalist and the worst see how can we find a good way to eat but like I said we have tore that direction. Thank you very very much. IMO So was the joy of thank you. Now I want to make the offer. I mean Washington D.C. and we were very very lucky one thousand nine hundred forty seven border asked Tate right next to the. Joe Biden is off to off the message. Is about three minutes from his home behind a National Cathedral for your you American University that's right there and there we have eighteen acres. We bought from. Alexandra Barrow and his wife he heard today that big piece of property property from the doctor apart. Dr Harshbarger was the funking father off a National Geographic Society. Where body nine hundred forty seven. Four hundred fifty thousand dollars now is about a forty five million dollars and I make a offer here in this room whenever you come to Washington D.C. Let me know in advance or through my colleague to Larry and I be more than happy to entertain you. And tour you about our premise is you be president because we had only one have that or regional telephone stand which Alexander Bell used it into Noakes to Cork Georgetown as a long distance phone cord.
