AE School welcomes Professors Theodorou, Gunter, and Sun

Dear AE alumni, faculty, students, and friends:

We are happy to resume publication of our newsletter for the month of August 2013, following a brief break in June and July of the summer term. I am pleased to report that three new faculty members, Professors Brian Gunter, Wenting Sun and  Evangelos Theodorou,  have joined our faculty bringing new areas of academic and research specialties. Professor Gunter's specialties are in the areas of satellite geodesy, orbital mechanics, earth and planetary observation, and high-performance computing.  Professor Theodorou specializes in the areas of nonlinear Stochastic optimal control and estimation, robotics, control theory, reinforcement learning, and computational neuroscience. Professor Sun's research activities involve plasma assisted combustion, chemical kinetics of different fuels, and laser diagnostics and spectroscopy of reacting flow systems.

As in the past, we are expecting a large freshman class this fall that includes many high achievers and President's Scholars, including Georgia Tech's very first President's Scholar from the United Kingdom. We are also expecting a large graduate class of highly gifted students pursuing our MS and Ph D programs. We will report on the class size and demographics of the incoming class in our future newsletters. To make room for the new faculty and students, we are making renovations to our instructional labs and creating office space for graduate students and the new faculty. The generous support you all have provided through our School's and Georgia Tech Foundation's annual fund raising campaigns have been a huge help. I wish to express my personal thanks to you all for this.

Our faculty and students continue to earn honors and awards, and this newsletter lists just a few of these achievements. I hope you will take the Family Weekend and Homecoming Weekend events as opportunities to visit our campus and stop by in our School. I look forward to seeing you at these events. In the meanwhile, please stay in touch by e-mail, and at our Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn web sites.

With best wishes,
Vigor Yang, Chair
