Strict interview with Jack Fletcher, class of 946 conducted by Maryland's summers on May the 23rd, the year 2011. We are at his home in for size, Monroe County, Georgia. The subject of the interview today, his life in general, his experiences. Mr. Fletcher, I'm going to call you Jack. 

And I wanted to clarify that we are at in the city of foresight, but we're in Monroe County, so and that's been plaguing you your whole life. You said the difference between those two things. 

Alright, let's start at the beginning. First of all, we're just delighted to be here with you today. It's a hot day outside. Just as well. Be sitting here quietly and talk and right, right. 

I want you to tell me where you were born and when our bon mot, the seven think 920 and ga, ga about a mouth and a half west of downtown. All know, reading place. 

And we were right in so for about two or three days till the dark couldn't come to the same it till the next day. It's your mom. 

I had to have you by my mother's two older sisters with assisted and so that region and so everybody remembers the weather when you came. And that same year, during the summer, you could walk across all Mogi and get your feet wet. There. Was that dry? 

It went from one frame to the island. Wow. 

Now what will your folks doing there? 

My dad was a row mayor care out of Juliet. Any went over in the cross Mogi and carried mail in Jones, can it plus Monroe County. And my mother was a tailor that had been raised them. Pope's bear, which has south. And when she was born, her father had died five months before she was born. 

Mother died when she was five years old and lived than the hips of a home until she was 12 up till now, the heads for the home with that for that was up for often children. 

And she You mentioned already she had two sisters, saw that there were older, but she had some brothers younger than the older sisters. 

So she when she was 12, she came back and live with them until she was 16 when she married my father. 

So the family had to make do or how it's managed until she got up enough to come live with them again. Yeah. 

So she had a difficult life, your mom and our last ride, their home that she was raised in, I bought the job Taylor, which is the grandfather and 1842. 

But he had lived near small garden near the 75 and rumble road and bear. 

But he had plantation from small all the way to the room. When he built that home. You call the head Seba know. Or did you mean the home that she was the Taylor Taylor Hall, the tail. 

Now the hips roll was well about 45 miles west of their home. 

In time at Pope failure specifically said you were born on the old reading Plato restaurant and they're reading WO, one arm was revolutionary soldier is read and it was passed down is reading clarity. It was a local hero. 

So it was an old home hometown. 

And were your parents renting it? 

Raining it and it goes we move with them a year and lived in next door where we're sitting today, how real He is, right. Let's go back to that time now. 925 in your daddy, the main carrier and your momma, we the first born of their children? 

No. I had a brother that was nine years old. Wow. 

So there's a big gap in the family? 

Yeah. Yeah. Your Mama was still young but she had IS they got to bad mouth brothers 1916. 

And that's when they married and add them and then they didn't have you tell all those years that all OVS and my mother had a black horse. When she was expecting the horse to get them on his knees. He was a well trained or asthma. 

So your older brother was like another family for HeartMath? 

And he was big enough to keep an eye on you too. Yeah, that is Little Joe. 

Now we know that your mama had to tread a tragedy in her mind that she had neither parent, but she had her two sisters are two older sisters to look after her and help her with your breath. 

And what about your dad side of the family? 

What was his family like? 

Well, my dad is family came from came in Monroe can end early 1838, late 830, sit around for a long time and he married into mug. 

That is, Daddy ran my grandfather made into the Miranda who had been in Crawford can know the knee and the Crawford can in which the Moroccan. 

And he was the son of Thomas Jefferson Fletcher, who had murdered and Macau and mood and they can in 1847. 

But my grandfather was the oldest year, the oldest child of a family of SAP. And his brother. Grandpa brother was duck in Macau and Fletcher. And he's the one who's the Senator from Florida. Oh, okay. 

So that's how that That's that can then did you ever know your grandpa? 

Yes. I need you map them overseas. That's the way you get to know him. Yes, I got to know him to love about seven. 

What can you remember? 

Playing? 

Checkers then? 

Marbles, if need be, that they could marry your grandpa. Grandpa. And he told me that he was involved with t. Hey, was just hadn't done. I'm a representative for the candy. And he was a lawyer. And he says, Oh, tell you, politics is crooked. 

But cause I know what I mean is that a confession? 

Let me know. I never knew my grandma. Oh, you didn't. 

So usually have died before I came. 

So you grew up with just one grandfather out of four? 

I only knew for a short time that's arrives. I kind of grew up without any grandparents. Yeah. 

But you had aunties and uncles on both sides? 

My dad is cis to put erosional. Top school in Atlanta for 35 years. Was the last Press below the Commercial High, which was done home. 

But oh, yeah, that was one of the principal high schools and Ryan C I sub C is the last press. 

And then she went to bars for us to teach that now that he only had one sister, your grant, your daddy. And I had an older sister, died as a DMP, if you remember your Aunt Rose? 

Oh, yes. And the head and ran. And how Wood who was called boots was the youngest one. And those were on your mother's side? 

My father's father had other yeah. Oh, I thought you just had one sister. Had one says that the groundwater. 

So you didn't have uncles around and your mama had two sisters and how many brothers had HA Casey. That's why that caused this go. Then the second time. And QCI, I had fun. And that came from a derivative of coke close. That's a lie. That because she did say that. 

So three brothers and two sisters? 

Yes. And then that stands to reason that you would have had cousins galore? 

Well, I did. On mother's side, my father, we were the only kid. No. Any extra for uncles and aunt knew and they only want you to worry about that. 

So if that's not families go there. Say Do you think your daddy was the first male carrier and his family? 

Yes. She started his daddy had been a politician. He went the other way. Civil servants, so to speak. And he became president of the association. And that's written, we would we went to Baltimore in Chicago in and hard time. 

May we drove as a family and went to the worse by and Chicago and 32 when other people didn't have my last job postings, you're saying your dad's job provided what President of what Association? 

Mail carrier may occur, rule out a care. Okay. Yeah. 

And did you ever get to go with him? 

His routes denote a onetime onetime thing and it was had been raining then need drove to a small orders or breads. Tell me what you remember your earliest earliest memory of growing up. You move you move from the already in place. You don't remember that probably at all. No. 

Because you move from their early but what's the first place you do remember? 

Well, we move that he makes though that on 26. And so what do you remember? 

I can remember heaven or no. Model T, the main rod and then it that had windows on the side? 

Yes, I remember that. I can remember those three years old habit and then torn in the hour just 0 when the house burn. Really, your husband was a wooden wooden home and will bind in the 1930. We built the brick home to take its place. Thank you. Play how did the fibers are? 

No, Go caught the house. And you can I think you remember that pretty clear. That we had on our own black fella couldn't hollow wall. And he brought a great big kitchen table out of the kitchen. He drag it out, drag ahead mason Norma wrote true forward. Truck, sitting there watching no mass at all the excitement? 

Yeah. I don't forget how far. No. That's a trauma. You sure don't need. 

Your mom and daddy lost a lot of stuff that they care well, you didn't you didn't have time to get to that no. In it and it's gone forever when a fire to run, a lot of memories go away. Fires. That's pretty traumatic. 

Where did you live in the interim period until they built a new house? 

We'd live with the nave was just a mental rumbles for bad. 

Oh, well, we and then we take them on and had a second store to the mom and brother and I lay of the day, you huh? 

And in that time, we as snow and old barn here was us know, we'll go through the cracks. I have a cold and anything. We mood and the brick home and all those had pneumonia. You get sick, they're alone. They say that can happen, you know. Did do you remember the rumble family? 

They were below those. They'll some of those boys went to Georgia Tech. Some of the rumble boy that not the ones that we will live with. 

But his brothers. Yeah. 

Because I can't remember what we know rumble road, but I can also remember interviewing bread and Elliott. Yeah. And and Joe is a descendant on the rumbles of the realm of their day. 

A lot a lot of kids and their lawn live to remember their mama and sums all yeah, hundreds of years old. 

So they're long. And so my mom mothers, people mad and some oh, yeah. Lay them down the line. You got rather big family. That's what I remember about. And then McCain is that's another family. And they like the home. He's read. Yeah, that that the only place. That house was the same model. My mother's house, down it, pope fair. They had ups die as the sun or wind is all set. 

And the head of all rafter, they could pull out their post and pull the furniture for the second flow because she couldn't you go up the furniture stairwell only. Somebody had a trick way to do that and that's why that happened. That's right. And the McKinney home was built the same time as the Tyler home? 

I'll be I'll be. 

Now as the Taylor Homes still there down and Juliet? 

Yes, my nephew lives And then I I only remember Juliet, I think from that movie. 

Well, pope's fair is south of there about non-man that blended. And dames. Fair is the pope fair was the first time Mr. Poe put the pair there. It was to keep from going from gray to make and to for psi. You would say the Australia Day or something. 

So, yeah, necessity was the mother of invention. 

I think that define a way or they found on how the Indians had a path south of Pope fair, where the old tale home AS today and hetero cross the show we call it. And there's an endangered dislike. You have road for wagon and stuff. The Indians, they figure that all out of their head. And what we call P rage goes from Pope fair to Bolingbroke. Where did you start school? 

Where what school was your first school to go to? 

Banks Stevens, grandma SKU. And where you five or six hours? 

Six? 

Yeah. Because I know they didn't have kindergartens and ozone. Ozone. 

So six years of age and that's right. We ready go out to school by then. Your brother was so far heavy. 

Well, I didn't go. Maybe that's too much attention. Animal cell. The major go anyway. Oh, yeah. And how did you get there? 

Was that walk Enter button? 

We had a bus that would take us a yawn. And as I got into high school, oh, you're going too fast. I want to know about where that bus what is not right near where we have the first clue. Birth I wrote was homemade man in you when you got into it? 

Yeah. The band over and slide in the seat. He couldn't walk. 

He had jury rigged it, so to speak of me now to some other platform, Vienna had an old Ford and any bill this body I own and I thought it was covered and had some canvas for the wonders. 

Either the windows were rolled up or there or there, or it was if it was raining, they can let it down. As you can picture in your mind, right now, Canada was a fancy name for those kind of buses. They were what did they call that? 

That Yeah. And he probably least it to the county. That's right. That's right. I think there was didn't have enough. Three of them, Mr. Rogers and Mr. gambled, and now seek our own country folk rise to the occasion to makes up around suitable and safe enough that your parents didn't have to worry about putting your board and then in like Git need buses are some. My mother's brother, Peachy. Hey, me was the next burst proud because they came our way. They used to. 

Well, the Gramsci when the little villages Bolingbroke date, fair and no like kind of the the the enabled consolidate them and then that's when the county, which is Todd. 

So he started running. 

So the best prize stop right here. Take your pick two rather. 

So your mama made you get on that asks whether you're ready or not. 

But there were other kids. 

So much. Oh, yeah. 

Well, I was the last one, the kid on the O. 

So it was full of kids? 

Yeah. You learned that you learn to be like school for the socialized. 

And if nothing, well, this weird little girls that look that you should remember from teachers, do you remember yearly cost or Yes, ma'am. Ms. Anderson is more frame of them is last to remember them all. They were wonderful teachers. And mist flower child was the principal. And one time when I was about the fifth grade, I went to town to get some post paper towel. 

Now what I'm supposed to do that and that this didn't miss this child who's going be easy Witness me show it to womb. 

But she didn't, but I didn't go to town. 

And I expect that even though you lived in the country, that if anything happened in town at school, your mom and daddy heard about it? 

Oh, yeah. Yeah. That was just the way it was. There was a real network commands the country folk for a long time for us. 

So yes, so I would my dad when he got off the mayo route, you pick me up and I come out and Rhonda Byrne back on? 

Yeah. Because he was available and also in 1925, photo1 halfway was paid way it is today. 

But before then, the dirt road right in front of this half, were those stagecoach through 925 before they pay that they use specifically mentioned that this section of the house we're in right now was built way back and 2023? 

Yeah. And it was a log house and it was on the route for the stage, much fat. And they had a little room on the poet that you could stay for over 99 and bother them. And that FAR place as they could. And that it was, it was a useful thinking that it's got a lot of, it doesn't look like it now. It's beautiful. I know everything's covered up, but we know what the bones and the rights that we know about. 

This is not the house you were raised in, but not all store to purchase this in the seven blah, blah, blah and added on and within, move in 63. 

So you added onto an added the back quite a bit. 

I mean, that's a pretty big house now, you would know and behaviors had some additions to the bot in there. Yeah. 

So here you are ego to school every day on the bus and you're a good student. I mean, Lynch made up your mind to it. 

Well, the loan could be just as well one hours then they six grade that they would be right in elementary school for six grade or was it a junior? 

And then we'll know you went in the seventh grade and went to ask and we only had 11 gray. 

So it would be 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 and high school. 

But in the sixth grade, TF college was right nearby. Nearby. And I went to piano lessons down and the chapel. Tiff college. Your mom, say you get finite math. Was the teeth. They are great. 

You're ever, and now ozone, boy, as Ooh, girl and loud Go do in school year skews during class time, yeah, I could walk down and go to VM lesson. And then the next year, this Huey was a piano teacher and music. And she would come to the house and that gather to play the piece before I would. And she told us she is a redneck music either, then Bye. It's better. That was about the end. 

So you could do missing my ear. To read the this, listen. Wow, that's pretty remarkable. And as I toggle play, oh, you never deal with the talent, Jack, you could know, but I was too busy. Do so move your mama talk to India for one year one year only. Uh-huh. 

What did you get into when you got into high school? 

Did you get into sports or what kind of activity? 

No. Go play basketball and they all love the Boers were Town Boys and they wanted to go to the drugstore. That a practice and write-offs do. I came home. 

So they hang out, they wanted some are no nonsense. Yeah. 

One of the things that I know from talking to you with during elementary school, you got involved in 4 H club, which was paragons, of course, for grotto rock countries. 

Now, did you guys have your own for each call in this area? 

Yes. Who did a lot of that would have worked everybody missed a while. A was this can agent and he was this instigator doing this with say, a robot furnished. The P and the first litter you turn a big back for the cycle. For each was to teach you animal husbandry. 

So you flatten it out, but you did whatever you did with it. You could breed it. And then you old one from the letter back. 

And it all depends on how good of a litter you had, how much money you made to figure out? 

I don't know. It was hard then, you know. 

But I can remember my dad have a DJ. 

And he we this head mole financially in the neighborhood because he was a say yeah, and I've been with him every house and the neighborhood and care when they didn't have. And so he looked after the folks that were worse on him. 

He was now the for-each taught you how to do all kind of farm and stuff and go out and all that kind of stuff gone. 

And most then at that time probably everybody was pretty interested in it because they thought it was. 

So gain them say, Oh, yeah, Yeah, Your dad was a mail carrier but he probably had garden, didn't need it. Yes, he hadn't gone. 

But the cut his teeth alone is route mode. They didn't have to cook Cake. They gave me they always gave you something. Yeah. I mean, that was a way, ally, at Christmas time, you probably had I think I land more than yeah. 

But it's wonderful that you learn from him. The lesson was you help out those around you that were not as well off. 

Well, how did your pig project go? 

Did you grow your pig that how big it was and they gave her a name. Give them a name. It's kinda hard to put them down. And C got pretty good at pod times. And so she then and get out of dominating logic. Yeah. 

How many stories definitely heard about is that Sally out those four jobs? 

Did she have a good size litter before you put her name? 

Yes. Oh, yes. Ever lived several letters. 

So she really ended up being pretty much it for Ryan. Made a lot of money for everybody. 

Well, just you have if not cash money, food months well, let's try that paid they had a bag of food and really yeah. It's an existing project. I've heard of people having how much they learn from that wound and mental health. Because we had cattle and I'll never forget that. Jazz the blue and red jersey cows. 

But he was ferocious. Thetas didn't want to stay where your booty. 

So you gotta be careful. Dad, it would knock him out pretty good, you know, beat on him pretty good. One damn ass on take, teach folks dig in the side of a then phase and we'll base oh, my word. 

So he was dangerous than it was in the time and there's fog and all like that. My dad had taken my grandfather than some moment to South Georgia, did. Back then, we didn't have their name. 

But anyway, my mom was so LED blue line. And the blue bars a tall, murky. 

But the the the there was that, uh, would it she she knew what she was. She took care of him when he went around and worry about half. 

So he was running catalysts. Are those are dairy cattle? 

Yeah. 

Well, I would they yeah. 

So you were had milk some but not much. One of my project. Yeah. 

But he did he ran a work attire. My I was still working on another job to restaurant. 

So that way people worse on him. And today nobody would know what we're talking about. A plant corn. And then they would plant made their vein. And the vein was about 40 inches long. And head pod I had bean then the pod and fuzz on it. That would e to a family and they will scratch, you'd get, and we add some here. Then phase a little a this picked. 

But those beans, you could grind them and make their good cattle feed. 

So that was the reason for that planet riding in the car and I got to cry and then it would run up that column, I thought, yeah, like how they knew how to do that. Yeah. 

They didn't have any machine? 

Yes, Every day I began my hand but that was to crops at one time for the same wedge ground to horses fail. 

And Fanny and the lemma clot train well in the past and you train came than bad limb, the thin and we'll go into the hash. That was her to go 11 o'clock. Light sound. Funny how animals can be trained. It's on the back to the railroad. This railroad was the first railroad from Macon to precise. 

The first train in Georgia. They carry freight and passengers. 

So you had an 1838 was the first thing. Wow, they had started in 1834. It was a Monroe bank and railroad. 

Isn't that interesting? 

So that my great grandfather, job Taylor, he, in his slave, is that he had built the foundation from the wildlife place near Bolingbroke to small, and that's still in the same place. It will end. Thank does the train still run? 

Yes. They back in. This aid is a trad close. And then you needed there one customer requested then we did from LA bone. Mmhm. 

So we kept on this day it comes through Yeah. Not as much probably as it did way back, you know, I used to have passion. You try and do an hour with Miami from Washington to the man that came right through the year. Ancestors, both on your mother and your father side. We're here during the war. 

So they were heavily involved in all of the HyFlex, more the Taylor, Taylor's and, and the Macau and, and, and Thomas deaths and my great grandfather, pleasure was made to the Macau and go. And he was at Apple Maddox. He had been wounded in said no. 

But he was an app or Maddox. 

When you growing up, did you guys know about that? 

Did you talk barriers? 

That's something you found out later time? 

Well, my grandfather would tell me. 

So there's stories that were passed that his wife died before he came home really, and his father-in-law pick them up into site and they lived in the country to the McCown place. And he stopped at the cemetery and said, hey, for workers. Yeah, that's first he knew she had been sick and air because he had been the CEO of whole sad. 

But they carpet baggers destroyed their home, them Macau and all the stock and the FDA didn't burn the house, but there's still kept their eye. It just occurred to me that you probably had civil war stories that were passed. A law firm that was seven out of the Macau and connection that was involved than long. Those stories hit pass down a down period. One album was Benjamin, they use killed and Gettysburg, the Peach Orchard Road Farm. And he was killed next to a South Carolinian. They will fight and together towards dealt with Dan. And there were bad. And we just found out about five years ago. 

They had moved benjamin to Charleston, South Carolina, bed with those South killed in I'll be how would you how they found out after somebody goes on Monday that's kept in the day in the record. 

Now began, I had the National Guard and aid is had contacted us, try and get money to move bodies. 

And we have pictures of this of that area with the bodies laying on the ground and now and the family. Once your y will bear, then, then dig. And that's how it's amazing stories. Yeah, alright, it's a year in high school and you don't play basketball. You work. 

You got Zhao hey were raised with what we call work ethic and then fall down for teen boy, rough data. 

So it's just you and your mom because your older brother must have gone off by then. He was a well, let's see. No. 

He was nine years old, you see was faulty wanting made any less than that? 

Talking about this, the faulty. Faulty. My brother was a good friend to the fellow who ran the grocery store. Raj's that time. 

And I went to work with 32, says somehow are made just on weekend and now made minded about my clothes, bought things from my mother. That today you and I can't even believe 941. My rose and her friend, Ms. Walker, and she had two daughters. I was 16 and she offered me a trip to the West Coast. 

And we went from psi to learning to Michigan through this one, a peg in from one peg to Madison, the hat, one thing but Parade. And then we went to thank in a car you were Chevrolet 0. 0 back in yes. Year. And we went from Calgary, Lake Louise. And why don't trip? 

It was 303 times. How much Vitamix? 

My three is Abbott did I bet you didn't go camping. And letting Tim Michigan. They made me a sleeping bag. Out of say evals material. Yes. Okay. I'm hours the hours old man. Thou was sleeping sleeping bag and when use a motel. 

And then when we got the Yellowstone and we went from Calgary, Vancouver, rebel stock and then Vancouver, and then to Seattle and down to Salt Lake and with the Yellowstone and, and God and the Yellowstone. How the brave and sleep on a poet put a cabin. 

We were to go shrimp to San Francisco where we came from in that water, what you saw a lot of the country too. Well. And then 16 years though. And we drove from Reno, Nevada to Salt Lake and the NIH because you didn't have this. It was too hot or so. Yeah. We are here at Rose was pretty crafty. She knew what she was going. I didn't see the shading is doing. These girls that were with us at tennis rackets, they had to come. And with that the way they played tennis. 

Well, I thought that was cool. Oh yeah. I like that. 

Now let's maybe huh? 

What a trap, what a trip. When you were in your junior year, your last year of school, they College in new year to year. 

What do you think about going to college? 

Well, my morning your day for she was the influence for you there. And she brought that up to you, mentioned oh, yeah. Yeah. 

So my uncle and then the feeler with this mill him he paid for it. We moved over two blocks north as a stadium. That take that template, right? 

Yeah. It was up and she she had an apartment and let you come stay there and I stayed where they were. 

Had you been thinking about going to college at all when you when you had told me I would go and family. And did they tell you don't be an engineer would say what our T off of that. And so this was nice then 42. 

So we already had Pearl Harbor. That default airline. Yeah, I am from hierarchy. I remember when my brother was already in there, so he had enlisted himself. 

Well, he was nine years old when they connected which branch that eagle into the he went signal co secant par and he was in the water. Come now right in and begin in the world wherever you live at Pearl Harbor occurred. I was here. Do you remember who come in from church? 

When we got home? 

It was Monday afternoon. 

You remember hairnet or with no, that was not known to you? 

Well, not when hours them the LEM grade than national god laughed and we went to the time I went to the Squire and the fall of my wisdom coma and set them watch the mass at all. 

Now we'll get to do that. Did you know? 

Yeah. 

So when they fall due to mate with this last time, I went and sat. Same place. Due to well, I that's take advect time, isn't it? 

So here you are. I mean, your brother's already off that war in your old enough now to go to college. 

So you decide to go move in with your hand? 

Well, they decided you'd move in with your Aunt Rose and you were going to go to Georgia Tech. 

Do you remember the process? 

Did you send in a letter and your grades or how to push your aunt probably knew how to manage all of that. 

Well, I should she loved that though. It was easy enough to get into tech. The tricky part with oh, yeah, that's right. Yeah. 

So we would do you remember if you didn't go into a dormitory, you went on it. And so our buddy of mine from p-side was in the dominator. 

Say that kept you at home, that with the cheaper uncle only had to pay for the tuition, which was dirt cheap. Again with not much money. 

But we'll go to the osha at the ballgame. Kits, a streetcar and rod to the federal pen. That was the end of the line and went down to the Black Cat and Marshall rod. 

And some of these dots that the vowel game that layer then presi, we get to facade before the one with the black cat. What wisdom or that looms a station o own. It was the Mac normal Road trade. You'll think of it sometimes but it was bottom. I have my pace therapy. 

Now, when you came in to Georgia Tech and it was a 940 to probably September of 1940, maybe August or September, that depth. 

And did they were they all in uniform by that time was everybody it was we had just went into the ROTC right off the bat. Yeah. 

Did that there were a lot of other programs like the AST play is FAP and I said No, I wouldn't have a job on that because they were up at four o'clock. 

And the most part the thing is is that almost everybody on the campus within some kind of a unit or another. Yeah. And we run that and Eva head group. Then they had an accelerated school program. 

When you went to school all year round, it was forced domestic four quarters even right all the way around. And everybody was supposed to be fast track and in learning. 

Now there was a lot, a lot of stuff going on then because they knew they had to get engineers and officers ready to go into the war. 

So that was the whole idea of it, right? 

So UK man, did they give you a choice of what you wanted, what courses you wanted to take? 

A mean, What did you sign up to be? 

Well, comin out of high school? 

Did the math one, I bet it wasn't good at math. And your sign was Griffin. The dangerous than the relief. And he judges have that had to be a certain dots. 

But what they would have looked at your math grades and said you need remedial math primarily, the law did take her made it because you wouldn't have had calculus or drone, would be fortunate if he even had did this slide rope. Ladder at oh, yes, he did. And you all that to their own peril.
