Strict interview with Jack Fletcher, class of 946 conducted by Maryland's summers on May the 23rd, the year 2011. We are at his home in for size, Monroe County, Georgia. The subject of the interview today, his life in general, his experiences. Mr. Fletcher, I'm going to call you Jack. And I wanted to clarify that we are at in the city of foresight, but we're in Monroe County, so and that's been plaguing you your whole life. You said the difference between those two things. Alright, let's start at the beginning. First of all, we're just delighted to be here with you today. It's a hot day outside. Just as well. Be sitting here quietly and talk and right, right. I want you to tell me where you were born and when our bon mot, the seven think 920 and ga, ga about a mouth and a half west of downtown. All know, reading place. And we were right in so for about two or three days till the dark couldn't come to the same it till the next day. It's your mom. I had to have you by my mother's two older sisters with assisted and so that region and so everybody remembers the weather when you came. And that same year, during the summer, you could walk across all Mogi and get your feet wet. There. Was that dry? It went from one frame to the island. Wow. Now what will your folks doing there? My dad was a row mayor care out of Juliet. Any went over in the cross Mogi and carried mail in Jones, can it plus Monroe County. And my mother was a tailor that had been raised them. Pope's bear, which has south. And when she was born, her father had died five months before she was born. Mother died when she was five years old and lived than the hips of a home until she was 12 up till now, the heads for the home with that for that was up for often children. And she You mentioned already she had two sisters, saw that there were older, but she had some brothers younger than the older sisters. So she when she was 12, she came back and live with them until she was 16 when she married my father. So the family had to make do or how it's managed until she got up enough to come live with them again. Yeah. So she had a difficult life, your mom and our last ride, their home that she was raised in, I bought the job Taylor, which is the grandfather and 1842. But he had lived near small garden near the 75 and rumble road and bear. But he had plantation from small all the way to the room. When he built that home. You call the head Seba know. Or did you mean the home that she was the Taylor Taylor Hall, the tail. Now the hips roll was well about 45 miles west of their home. In time at Pope failure specifically said you were born on the old reading Plato restaurant and they're reading WO, one arm was revolutionary soldier is read and it was passed down is reading clarity. It was a local hero. So it was an old home hometown. And were your parents renting it? Raining it and it goes we move with them a year and lived in next door where we're sitting today, how real He is, right. Let's go back to that time now. 925 in your daddy, the main carrier and your momma, we the first born of their children? No. I had a brother that was nine years old. Wow. So there's a big gap in the family? Yeah. Yeah. Your Mama was still young but she had IS they got to bad mouth brothers 1916. And that's when they married and add them and then they didn't have you tell all those years that all OVS and my mother had a black horse. When she was expecting the horse to get them on his knees. He was a well trained or asthma. So your older brother was like another family for HeartMath? And he was big enough to keep an eye on you too. Yeah, that is Little Joe. Now we know that your mama had to tread a tragedy in her mind that she had neither parent, but she had her two sisters are two older sisters to look after her and help her with your breath. And what about your dad side of the family? What was his family like? Well, my dad is family came from came in Monroe can end early 1838, late 830, sit around for a long time and he married into mug. That is, Daddy ran my grandfather made into the Miranda who had been in Crawford can know the knee and the Crawford can in which the Moroccan. And he was the son of Thomas Jefferson Fletcher, who had murdered and Macau and mood and they can in 1847. But my grandfather was the oldest year, the oldest child of a family of SAP. And his brother. Grandpa brother was duck in Macau and Fletcher. And he's the one who's the Senator from Florida. Oh, okay. So that's how that That's that can then did you ever know your grandpa? Yes. I need you map them overseas. That's the way you get to know him. Yes, I got to know him to love about seven. What can you remember? Playing? Checkers then? Marbles, if need be, that they could marry your grandpa. Grandpa. And he told me that he was involved with t. Hey, was just hadn't done. I'm a representative for the candy. And he was a lawyer. And he says, Oh, tell you, politics is crooked. But cause I know what I mean is that a confession? Let me know. I never knew my grandma. Oh, you didn't. So usually have died before I came. So you grew up with just one grandfather out of four? I only knew for a short time that's arrives. I kind of grew up without any grandparents. Yeah. But you had aunties and uncles on both sides? My dad is cis to put erosional. Top school in Atlanta for 35 years. Was the last Press below the Commercial High, which was done home. But oh, yeah, that was one of the principal high schools and Ryan C I sub C is the last press. And then she went to bars for us to teach that now that he only had one sister, your grant, your daddy. And I had an older sister, died as a DMP, if you remember your Aunt Rose? Oh, yes. And the head and ran. And how Wood who was called boots was the youngest one. And those were on your mother's side? My father's father had other yeah. Oh, I thought you just had one sister. Had one says that the groundwater. So you didn't have uncles around and your mama had two sisters and how many brothers had HA Casey. That's why that caused this go. Then the second time. And QCI, I had fun. And that came from a derivative of coke close. That's a lie. That because she did say that. So three brothers and two sisters? Yes. And then that stands to reason that you would have had cousins galore? Well, I did. On mother's side, my father, we were the only kid. No. Any extra for uncles and aunt knew and they only want you to worry about that. So if that's not families go there. Say Do you think your daddy was the first male carrier and his family? Yes. She started his daddy had been a politician. He went the other way. Civil servants, so to speak. And he became president of the association. And that's written, we would we went to Baltimore in Chicago in and hard time. May we drove as a family and went to the worse by and Chicago and 32 when other people didn't have my last job postings, you're saying your dad's job provided what President of what Association? Mail carrier may occur, rule out a care. Okay. Yeah. And did you ever get to go with him? His routes denote a onetime onetime thing and it was had been raining then need drove to a small orders or breads. Tell me what you remember your earliest earliest memory of growing up. You move you move from the already in place. You don't remember that probably at all. No. Because you move from their early but what's the first place you do remember? Well, we move that he makes though that on 26. And so what do you remember? I can remember heaven or no. Model T, the main rod and then it that had windows on the side? Yes, I remember that. I can remember those three years old habit and then torn in the hour just 0 when the house burn. Really, your husband was a wooden wooden home and will bind in the 1930. We built the brick home to take its place. Thank you. Play how did the fibers are? No, Go caught the house. And you can I think you remember that pretty clear. That we had on our own black fella couldn't hollow wall. And he brought a great big kitchen table out of the kitchen. He drag it out, drag ahead mason Norma wrote true forward. Truck, sitting there watching no mass at all the excitement? Yeah. I don't forget how far. No. That's a trauma. You sure don't need. Your mom and daddy lost a lot of stuff that they care well, you didn't you didn't have time to get to that no. In it and it's gone forever when a fire to run, a lot of memories go away. Fires. That's pretty traumatic. Where did you live in the interim period until they built a new house? We'd live with the nave was just a mental rumbles for bad. Oh, well, we and then we take them on and had a second store to the mom and brother and I lay of the day, you huh? And in that time, we as snow and old barn here was us know, we'll go through the cracks. I have a cold and anything. We mood and the brick home and all those had pneumonia. You get sick, they're alone. They say that can happen, you know. Did do you remember the rumble family? They were below those. They'll some of those boys went to Georgia Tech. Some of the rumble boy that not the ones that we will live with. But his brothers. Yeah. Because I can't remember what we know rumble road, but I can also remember interviewing bread and Elliott. Yeah. And and Joe is a descendant on the rumbles of the realm of their day. A lot a lot of kids and their lawn live to remember their mama and sums all yeah, hundreds of years old. So they're long. And so my mom mothers, people mad and some oh, yeah. Lay them down the line. You got rather big family. That's what I remember about. And then McCain is that's another family. And they like the home. He's read. Yeah, that that the only place. That house was the same model. My mother's house, down it, pope fair. They had ups die as the sun or wind is all set. And the head of all rafter, they could pull out their post and pull the furniture for the second flow because she couldn't you go up the furniture stairwell only. Somebody had a trick way to do that and that's why that happened. That's right. And the McKinney home was built the same time as the Tyler home? I'll be I'll be. Now as the Taylor Homes still there down and Juliet? Yes, my nephew lives And then I I only remember Juliet, I think from that movie. Well, pope's fair is south of there about non-man that blended. And dames. Fair is the pope fair was the first time Mr. Poe put the pair there. It was to keep from going from gray to make and to for psi. You would say the Australia Day or something. So, yeah, necessity was the mother of invention. I think that define a way or they found on how the Indians had a path south of Pope fair, where the old tale home AS today and hetero cross the show we call it. And there's an endangered dislike. You have road for wagon and stuff. The Indians, they figure that all out of their head. And what we call P rage goes from Pope fair to Bolingbroke. Relay will continue on to the load and God with that. So minuss dreams to Chrome, but they don't cross any strain from Pope Bolingbroke. They figured out a way to do all of that. Where did you start school? Where what school was your first school to go to? Banks Stevens, grandma SKU. And where you five or six hours? Six? Yeah. Because I know they didn't have kindergartens and ozone. Ozone. So six years of age and that's right. We ready go out to school by then. Your brother was so far heavy. Well, I didn't go. Maybe that's too much attention. Animal cell. The major go anyway. Oh, yeah. And how did you get there? Was that walk Enter button? We had a bus that would take us a yawn. And as I got into high school, oh, you're going too fast. I want to know about where that bus what is not right near where we have the first clue. Birth I wrote was homemade man in you when you got into it? Yeah. The band over and slide in the seat. He couldn't walk. He had jury rigged it, so to speak of me now to some other platform, Vienna had an old Ford and any bill this body I own and I thought it was covered and had some canvas for the wonders. Either the windows were rolled up or there or there, or it was if it was raining, they can let it down. As you can picture in your mind, right now, Canada was a fancy name for those kind of buses. They were what did they call that? That Yeah. And he probably least it to the county. That's right. That's right. I think there was didn't have enough. Three of them, Mr. Rogers and Mr. gambled, and now seek our own country folk rise to the occasion to makes up around suitable and safe enough that your parents didn't have to worry about putting your board and then in like Git need buses are some. My mother's brother, Peachy. Hey, me was the next burst proud because they came our way. They used to. Well, the Gramsci when the little villages Bolingbroke date, fair and no like kind of the the the enabled consolidate them and then that's when the county, which is Todd. So he started running. So the best prize stop right here. Take your pick two rather. So your mama made you get on that asks whether you're ready or not. But there were other kids. So much. Oh, yeah. Well, I was the last one, the kid on the O. So it was full of kids? Yeah. You learned that you learn to be like school for the socialized. And if nothing, well, this weird little girls that look that you should remember from teachers, do you remember yearly cost or Yes, ma'am. Ms. Anderson is more frame of them is last to remember them all. They were wonderful teachers. And mist flower child was the principal. And one time when I was about the fifth grade, I went to town to get some post paper towel. Now what I'm supposed to do that and that this didn't miss this child who's going be easy Witness me show it to womb. But she didn't, but I didn't go to town. And I expect that even though you lived in the country, that if anything happened in town at school, your mom and daddy heard about it? Oh, yeah. Yeah. That was just the way it was. There was a real network commands the country folk for a long time for us. So yes, so I would my dad when he got off the mayo route, you pick me up and I come out and Rhonda Byrne back on? Yeah. Because he was available and also in 1925, photo1 halfway was paid way it is today. But before then, the dirt road right in front of this half, were those stagecoach through 925 before they pay that they use specifically mentioned that this section of the house we're in right now was built way back and 2023? Yeah. And it was a log house and it was on the route for the stage, much fat. And they had a little room on the poet that you could stay for over 99 and bother them. And that FAR place as they could. And that it was, it was a useful thinking that it's got a lot of, it doesn't look like it now. It's beautiful. I know everything's covered up, but we know what the bones and the rights that we know about. This is not the house you were raised in, but not all store to purchase this in the seven blah, blah, blah and added on and within, move in 63. So you added onto an added the back quite a bit. I mean, that's a pretty big house now, you would know and behaviors had some additions to the bot in there. Yeah. So here you are ego to school every day on the bus and you're a good student. I mean, Lynch made up your mind to it. Well, the loan could be just as well one hours then they six grade that they would be right in elementary school for six grade or was it a junior? And then we'll know you went in the seventh grade and went to ask and we only had 11 gray. So it would be 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 and high school. But in the sixth grade, TF college was right nearby. Nearby. And I went to piano lessons down and the chapel. Tiff college. Your mom, say you get finite math. Was the teeth. They are great. You're ever, and now ozone, boy, as Ooh, girl and loud Go do in school year skews during class time, yeah, I could walk down and go to VM lesson. And then the next year, this Huey was a piano teacher and music. And she would come to the house and that gather to play the piece before I would. And she told us she is a redneck music either, then Bye. It's better. That was about the end. So you could do missing my ear. To read the this, listen. Wow, that's pretty remarkable. And as I toggle play, oh, you never deal with the talent, Jack, you could know, but I was too busy. Do so move your mama talk to India for one year one year only. Uh-huh. What did you get into when you got into high school? Did you get into sports or what kind of activity? No. Go play basketball and they all love the Boers were Town Boys and they wanted to go to the drugstore. That a practice and write-offs do. I came home. So they hang out, they wanted some are no nonsense. Yeah. One of the things that I know from talking to you with during elementary school, you got involved in 4 H club, which was paragons, of course, for grotto rock countries. Now, did you guys have your own for each call in this area? Yes. Who did a lot of that would have worked everybody missed a while. A was this can agent and he was this instigator doing this with say, a robot furnished. The P and the first litter you turn a big back for the cycle. For each was to teach you animal husbandry. So you flatten it out, but you did whatever you did with it. You could breed it. And then you old one from the letter back. And it all depends on how good of a litter you had, how much money you made to figure out? I don't know. It was hard then, you know. But I can remember my dad have a DJ. And he we this head mole financially in the neighborhood because he was a say yeah, and I've been with him every house and the neighborhood and care when they didn't have. And so he looked after the folks that were worse on him. He was now the for-each taught you how to do all kind of farm and stuff and go out and all that kind of stuff gone. And most then at that time probably everybody was pretty interested in it because they thought it was. So gain them say, Oh, yeah, Yeah, Your dad was a mail carrier but he probably had garden, didn't need it. Yes, he hadn't gone. But the cut his teeth alone is route mode. They didn't have to cook Cake. They gave me they always gave you something. Yeah. I mean, that was a way, ally, at Christmas time, you probably had I think I land more than yeah. But it's wonderful that you learn from him. The lesson was you help out those around you that were not as well off. Well, how did your pig project go? Did you grow your pig that how big it was and they gave her a name. Give them a name. It's kinda hard to put them down. And C got pretty good at pod times. And so she then and get out of dominating logic. Yeah. How many stories definitely heard about is that Sally out those four jobs? Did she have a good size litter before you put her name? Yes. Oh, yes. Ever lived several letters. So she really ended up being pretty much it for Ryan. Made a lot of money for everybody. Well, just you have if not cash money, food months well, let's try that paid they had a bag of food and really yeah. It's an existing project. I've heard of people having how much they learn from that wound and mental health. Because we had cattle and I'll never forget that. Jazz the blue and red jersey cows. But he was ferocious. Thetas didn't want to stay where your booty. So you gotta be careful. Dad, it would knock him out pretty good, you know, beat on him pretty good. One damn ass on take, teach folks dig in the side of a then phase and we'll base oh, my word. So he was dangerous than it was in the time and there's fog and all like that. My dad had taken my grandfather than some moment to South Georgia, did. Back then, we didn't have their name. But anyway, my mom was so LED blue line. And the blue bars a tall, murky. But the the the there was that, uh, would it she she knew what she was. She took care of him when he went around and worry about half. So he was running catalysts. Are those are dairy cattle? Yeah. Well, I would they yeah. So you were had milk some but not much. One of my project. Yeah. But he did he ran a work attire. My I was still working on another job to restaurant. So that way people worse on him. And today nobody would know what we're talking about. A plant corn. And then they would plant made their vein. And the vein was about 40 inches long. And head pod I had bean then the pod and fuzz on it. That would e to a family and they will scratch, you'd get, and we add some here. Then phase a little a this picked. But those beans, you could grind them and make their good cattle feed. So that was the reason for that planet riding in the car and I got to cry and then it would run up that column, I thought, yeah, like how they knew how to do that. Yeah. They didn't have any machine? Yes, Every day I began my hand but that was to crops at one time for the same wedge ground to horses fail. And Fanny and the lemma clot train well in the past and you train came than bad limb, the thin and we'll go into the hash. That was her to go 11 o'clock. Light sound. Funny how animals can be trained. It's on the back to the railroad. This railroad was the first railroad from Macon to precise. The first train in Georgia. They carry freight and passengers. So you had an 1838 was the first thing. Wow, they had started in 1834. It was a Monroe bank and railroad. Isn't that interesting? So that my great grandfather, job Taylor, he, in his slave, is that he had built the foundation from the wildlife place near Bolingbroke to small, and that's still in the same place. It will end. Thank does the train still run? Yes. They back in. This aid is a trad close. And then you needed there one customer requested then we did from LA bone. Mmhm. So we kept on this day it comes through Yeah. Not as much probably as it did way back, you know, I used to have passion. You try and do an hour with Miami from Washington to the man that came right through the year. Ancestors, both on your mother and your father side. We're here during the war. So they were heavily involved in all of the HyFlex, more the Taylor, Taylor's and, and the Macau and, and, and Thomas deaths and my great grandfather, pleasure was made to the Macau and go. And he was at Apple Maddox. He had been wounded in said no. But he was an app or Maddox. When you growing up, did you guys know about that? Did you talk barriers? That's something you found out later time? Well, my grandfather would tell me. So there's stories that were passed that his wife died before he came home really, and his father-in-law pick them up into site and they lived in the country to the McCown place. And he stopped at the cemetery and said, hey, for workers. Yeah, that's first he knew she had been sick and air because he had been the CEO of whole sad. But they carpet baggers destroyed their home, them Macau and all the stock and the FDA didn't burn the house, but there's still kept their eye. It just occurred to me that you probably had civil war stories that were passed. A law firm that was seven out of the Macau and connection that was involved than long. Those stories hit pass down a down period. One album was Benjamin, they use killed and Gettysburg, the Peach Orchard Road Farm. And he was killed next to a South Carolinian. They will fight and together towards dealt with Dan. And there were bad. And we just found out about five years ago. They had moved benjamin to Charleston, South Carolina, bed with those South killed in I'll be how would you how they found out after somebody goes on Monday that's kept in the day in the record. Now began, I had the National Guard and aid is had contacted us, try and get money to move bodies. And we have pictures of this of that area with the bodies laying on the ground and now and the family. Once your y will bear, then, then dig. And that's how it's amazing stories. Yeah, alright, it's a year in high school and you don't play basketball. You work. You got Zhao hey were raised with what we call work ethic and then fall down for teen boy, rough data. So it's just you and your mom because your older brother must have gone off by then. He was a well, let's see. No. He was nine years old, you see was faulty wanting made any less than that? Talking about this, the faulty. Faulty. My brother was a good friend to the fellow who ran the grocery store. Raj's that time. And I went to work with 32, says somehow are made just on weekend and now made minded about my clothes, bought things from my mother. That today you and I can't even believe 941. My rose and her friend, Ms. Walker, and she had two daughters. I was 16 and she offered me a trip to the West Coast. And we went from psi to learning to Michigan through this one, a peg in from one peg to Madison, the hat, one thing but Parade. And then we went to thank in a car you were Chevrolet 0. 0 back in yes. Year. And we went from Calgary, Lake Louise. And why don't trip? It was 303 times. How much Vitamix? My three is Abbott did I bet you didn't go camping. And letting Tim Michigan. They made me a sleeping bag. Out of say evals material. Yes. Okay. I'm hours the hours old man. Thou was sleeping sleeping bag and when use a motel. And then when we got the Yellowstone and we went from Calgary, Vancouver, rebel stock and then Vancouver, and then to Seattle and down to Salt Lake and with the Yellowstone and, and God and the Yellowstone. How the brave and sleep on a poet put a cabin. We were to go shrimp to San Francisco where we came from in that water, what you saw a lot of the country too. Well. And then 16 years though. And we drove from Reno, Nevada to Salt Lake and the NIH because you didn't have this. It was too hot or so. Yeah. We are here at Rose was pretty crafty. She knew what she was going. I didn't see the shading is doing. These girls that were with us at tennis rackets, they had to come. And with that the way they played tennis. Well, I thought that was cool. Oh yeah. I like that. Now let's maybe huh? What a trap, what a trip. When you were in your junior year, your last year of school, they College in new year to year. What do you think about going to college? Well, my morning your day for she was the influence for you there. And she brought that up to you, mentioned oh, yeah. Yeah. So my uncle and then the feeler with this mill him he paid for it. We moved over two blocks north as a stadium. That take that template, right? Yeah. It was up and she she had an apartment and let you come stay there and I stayed where they were. Had you been thinking about going to college at all when you when you had told me I would go and family. And did they tell you don't be an engineer would say what our T off of that. And so this was nice then 42. So we already had Pearl Harbor. That default airline. Yeah, I am from hierarchy. I remember when my brother was already in there, so he had enlisted himself. Well, he was nine years old when they connected which branch that eagle into the he went signal co secant par and he was in the water. Come now right in and begin in the world wherever you live at Pearl Harbor occurred. I was here. Do you remember who come in from church? When we got home? It was Monday afternoon. You remember hairnet or with no, that was not known to you? Well, not when hours them the LEM grade than national god laughed and we went to the time I went to the Squire and the fall of my wisdom coma and set them watch the mass at all. Now we'll get to do that. Did you know? Yeah. So when they fall due to mate with this last time, I went and sat. Same place. Due to well, I that's take advect time, isn't it? So here you are. I mean, your brother's already off that war in your old enough now to go to college. So you decide to go move in with your hand? Well, they decided you'd move in with your Aunt Rose and you were going to go to Georgia Tech. Do you remember the process? Did you send in a letter and your grades or how to push your aunt probably knew how to manage all of that. Well, I should she loved that though. It was easy enough to get into tech. The tricky part with oh, yeah, that's right. Yeah. So we would do you remember if you didn't go into a dormitory, you went on it. And so our buddy of mine from p-side was in the dominator. Say that kept you at home, that with the cheaper uncle only had to pay for the tuition, which was dirt cheap. Again with not much money. But we'll go to the osha at the ballgame. Kits, a streetcar and rod to the federal pen. That was the end of the line and went down to the Black Cat and Marshall rod. And some of these dots that the vowel game that layer then presi, we get to facade before the one with the black cat. What wisdom or that looms a station o own. It was the Mac normal Road trade. You'll think of it sometimes but it was bottom. I have my pace therapy. Now, when you came in to Georgia Tech and it was a 940 to probably September of 1940, maybe August or September, that depth. And did they were they all in uniform by that time was everybody it was we had just went into the ROTC right off the bat. Yeah. Did that there were a lot of other programs like the AST play is FAP and I said No, I wouldn't have a job on that because they were up at four o'clock. And the most part the thing is is that almost everybody on the campus within some kind of a unit or another. Yeah. And we run that and Eva head group. Then they had an accelerated school program. When you went to school all year round, it was forced domestic four quarters even right all the way around. And everybody was supposed to be fast track and in learning. Now there was a lot, a lot of stuff going on then because they knew they had to get engineers and officers ready to go into the war. So that was the whole idea of it, right? So UK man, did they give you a choice of what you wanted, what courses you wanted to take? A mean, What did you sign up to be? Well, comin out of high school? Did the math one, I bet it wasn't good at math. And your sign was Griffin. The dangerous than the relief. And he judges have that had to be a certain dots. But what they would have looked at your math grades and said you need remedial math primarily, the law did take her made it because you wouldn't have had calculus or drone, would be fortunate if he even had did this slide rope. Ladder at oh, yes, he did. And you all that to their own peril. If you pass a member. With a cath, thigh. The paternity, because some of a rose is an x and connections among them. Did you rush perfect certainty and Lincoln family cat. But what I did when I was an ROTC unit could Elmo. Yet first, clay Frank balls was a pivot man and he was talking football. And out of position that I possess a bit too funny. If I didn't know, you know, freight BRI ladder bronchi his webpage because you to laugh did that. He was the one that kind of foiled your progress as the Lady with this talking football, when he was a big football me are made that his entire life. He still ride that. So that's buddy of mine. Stayed in the Navy and he became a pilot. But he ended up and out of Memphis, Tennessee in the FFA direct and schedules and routes. And though he retired from when you think back to those times like let's go back and think now. You, you commute every day. So you had what? You didn't live that far away so you could campus real quick. Why did they didn't have any orientations to speak? I'll send you off to camp D to know each other. It was all business. Everybody had a guy. We had an hour and he did. Okay. Do you know him on our tour on my lap, right. Right on grounds. Right on anything. And sometimes I would eat in the calf tier, which is 0 when they're the boss that they mean that they are written dining hall, right? It was caught Brandon. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The Navy took it over during the war and they they brand it. But if that other people have done to it, the campus was pretty small. You didn't walk, you didn't go well, rho fail. Last one we drilled down and then pass the basketball. Calcium that didn't even exist, then not know. But past there is where we was all roll no buildings and that thing cause adult kudzu, no trees, the null and that's where we train and our ROTC for the expressway it went through oh, yeah, that was there. And the Naval armory was where they would have basketball, whatever exercise Glad to be done there. It was pretty cramped quarters. Now, do you remember did they put you in engineering or did they put you in men Industrial Management? And allow is supposed to be civil in civil engineering. Okay. So you are taken the test stuff, the high-level thickness. I can add that to how how how prepared where you for all and was not. So with Tableau course, you had the boss from Long Island. Even than that, you download or what they were going to mesh. It didn't even know that they were dinosaurs. They told him about stuff, goes into my boots. But as for I'm Dom at math and yeah, I'm fine. The best thing I had was draft and oh, well, that's good that you you might have that a lot of kids didn't like that. They thought it was too hard. Well, you say, Hey, wouldn't know, always stay and ride. It got away. Now what I did was came history. Book off. We'll now want to maladaptations. We have professors out-of-band the bone. And he made me his assist because they know you knew more than the rest of them. Well, which I didn't know what to do with what you learned that that was that was pretty high level. I mean, you will learn and the best there was to learn. Do you remember any of the professors you had that for granted in a zonal on he was this Dina students. Actually, I'm not even sure he was around that much then because he was he was in the Navy. He was I had been a World War One and he was a navy in the Navy in World War 2, but I'm not sure when he shipped out was a Oh, man. There were how they algebra? Yeah, about one more drill. Smith was the professor of mathematics and he was an elderly man, had lithium then, yeah, idioms. There was a funny guy. He had a good sense of humor. Yeah, very dry wet. Yeah. Wonderful teacher, I'm told he taught. Yeah. And there was a guy named Shorty board tell who taught physics? There were Glenn Rainey was the English professor. Do you remember him? Then I'll ring a bell. He was funny to another one with very dry sense of humor, very liberal, very involved and justice in what was going on. That one, a cold call a bill and old day et al. It was there but berry behind on rent every day. Not that big, prominent one then there now there were Bobby dad was there. Oh yeah. Hey Coach Alec was there. Alice was still a football coach at that time. That's when he didn't know it was an Alabama yeah, that was so name it joe, name it after Lotvall game and the ram them. With Dan's a concrete wall. He ran than the wave in this within lab. They didn't like that. That's old is diagonal. Remember deal made? Yeah. There was there were a lot of football players that were pretty good. I'll think lit cafe was there, could run down the sidelines and sqaure when they have bought authority was out-of-bounds. I'm told that he was faster than a human, could really lousy. So you were there during his time? Yes. Come over from boys, Hey, got killed. That follow a winner. Yeah. So but you were there that, that matter from that time, that football football season of 1945. Look, look, Bowen was there. And Frank Boyle's of course Smith and Bobby dad was the assistant coach. He was he was not the head coach. N1 then Alex De was, but not not for long. A few years later, a change. Dna Jack's was around and deemed a jagged name. That name ring a bell. I'm trying to think if there were some other ones that were there. Well, our president at that time was was still DR. Britain but he was pretty old by then. Yeah, he he would walk around saying hello to the young gentlemen, but they had to keep an eye on him because he wanted to retire, but they couldn't hire anyone else. Well, there's a lot more, but also and then we will get a chance to go to Agnes, got to some of that. And we get less trolley from Agnes, Scott and Walt from downtown Atlanta ticket ticket back that they had. It was worth it, huh? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. There was a professor of them by the name of Floyd field who had who would often have events at his house for Yeah. Agnes got girls and he'd bring some of the boys over to Julie, get to that. And yet that day that you really erode the trolley car? Oh yeah. There was a lot to do for a country boy like Atlanta. That was oh, yeah. That was a big time experience. If you put on a white shirt and went downtown and won't than down and back. It was black on the column from literally from the all the Kohlberg hold learned that. No one's ever told me that before. I've heard that from other places. But it makes sense of course, because we had all kinds of industry and, and the one with the Notre Dame, we made a chain, met him at that IPO and came through every the law by the red, the red back to the shirt tail parades that grew out of that time. Oh, fun, fun, fun. So let's talk about short-tailed parades because you took part in a really big one, the 40 to follow 42, you said Notre Dame de and made them I am no per day and we met him at the station. O tell me that part. So everybody from Tech was all good? Yeah. And I don't know how long but we had Ben them at some time, you know, freight we'll call that trying k. And the train came yen. And then who lead it? I don't know. Say you started out down there, but we went brow ridges and came over and got on at five points and K-map peace tree. But every C it was at nighttime. Them was open, but the a this and you'd go in the lobby. And come back to what I love to learn and holler. And the whole time we did go through the Hindu great teaching really sure did, you know that's where the representatives always Day states rights. But when the fox, now we're Dharma stain on pastry do with the streetcar rails. And you run or no, although that's not vague, is now what's everybody singing and scream and all? Yes. Barney, you there. It's all about we won we are the Ramblin Wreck. Oh, yes. Anything and everything they could think of HA and and you said it was a long long parades a lot of your right eye. When hundredths. That was what I can't even imagine how much fun it must have been to be that young and be that full of everything. And then you get older, you see crazy. What do you break your leg? Good. Yeah. I don't know if somebody would fall but I didn't know anybody ever heard of anyone getting seriously hurt. I've heard of them reckon things sometimes accidentally like, I think the facts what they pushed the drum off the stage or somebody fell on a drum. And I know that Dr. Brittain made them collect money to repair or replace it or repair it. But they were a lot of fun. I'm having my grand we end is that this stayed back into the stadium mistreatment and how when an occasion, if the game was played at home, that it would start right from the stadium. Galois fall away downtown. I didn't know you went in and out of riches to me, yeah. Well, we didn't that was close on wave ray of light one way flow. But if it was daytime, they will go through the I know they went into some of the little shops along. In fact, my husband, I didn't know. Well, I guess you couldn't do it today. Too many people. No traffic jam. No. I'm for itself, the Arcadia was open but I don't remember running through but it was open. Open, you know that? I don't know what year that close. I don't either. It was probably after the war. The one thing it ham than that for our points are now was that day. But in now went downtown and the guy would like, Wells Fargo with the money, had dropped the sack. Again, is that at five points and they all a big zygote. Oh, no penalties everywhere. Oh my gosh. How humiliate. We then get involved. We would want to like them. My goodness. When you say that K-T event, the peachy arcade, that came down much, much later, too bad, they didn't keep it to what was a beauty oh, yeah. A beautiful thing to have down there. My oh my, you saw a lot of changes you will see in your manual. Presses used to be then, then then there was not only can the company done in that area and I seen advertisements in the back of the blueprints for them. I don't care. There was some kind of pharmacy where you could get a chocolate milk with ice cream and the tablet. And that was, that was, that had five points. It will cross from the Grand T across from the right end point of the yeah. I heard a lot about that place or that people used to love them because it was only when a nickel or candidates are some chocolate melt with the scoop ice cream and right, Let's talk a little bit about some of the places you would go to eat when you were down there, you would tell me about the S and W cafeteria. S and W is across from the Henry Grady all the way downtown. Yeah, it was right than 10. And these waders and hole at work, they had been students of mine are still was still an accurate and how my plate I go they ever you had an extra? Yeah. Well, it's good to go to lunch with her. I got it. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Virginia tea room. Mostly. Ladies than that, but I'd go Maya with some special with it fancy. I mean, is that especially lately? Like Yeah, Well, it was just they really serve tea. So with hot tea and all that apply, there wasn't a guy. Richard said one. And Davidson, how there's the Magnolia Room. I know you really rich. You go there for some special one wrong because they always had special kinds of things and those kind of analysis. But when you went to the vast city, had a drive in a hop on the run and bowed to the fat. And the thing was to get a little. Orange, Drake and the little glass. And that was the collect them and that you wished you still had it. If you had a captive budget though they were the heads of the day. Today, I'm sure there are collectibles and I don't remember any dining room there. It in forward Is it was most you could walk in and get your food. But there were many place to sit and eat the food. Britain dining hall. Maybe not. Talking about the vol Oh, no, no. You're right. It was all a little bit later. They put in the what they called the TV rooms when they say right. As many later on these Yeah. Yeah. Manny, a text isn't told me that that was the first time I ever saw on television. Was that denies did it because they didn't have them from Haram. They were really the only thing that it was a real happy time for everybody, right. I've even all the war was going on. Yeah. Just you mentioned to me that you felt like everybody helped everybody and that's dry you out. Even after the war. What day the girl that was gone west and that lived and nouns. Now, I would catch a milk truck presi and go to Atlanta and catch another truck to Amazon. Now on Sunday, I believe both take it back. But it was the way people live. Everybody helped different but yeah, might have been okay to go hitchhike and even as alcohol or less rather say that. When I was a tech, we come at the back, can come on. We didn't go to them through Griffin When he came around that way. And if you had your right hand on, the more, the better. Yeah. That was that Will you call on God? At the end of the first quarter. Did you have good enough grace to pass that first quarter? And everything but the man oh, math of hard. They weren't you didn't have any background for that dolphin well, shrine. So but you came back again next quarter and that was the winter quarter. Now the war is getting much anymore. It's all over the papers. And then in February where I was the draft board here, conscripted me and wanted to stay the full year I finished school, and certainly not. My brother's already watercolor now. And they wouldn't give me any relief. The finished a year they should have because it's rather talk to the sergeant or the ROTC and told him to apply. He said, I'll tell you what you do. Five o'clock, mass is 16. You come down to the office. And that when I volunteered and I didn't go to September the 24th. So he let you finish out your face here, you'll have learned is that do you think he pulled some strings to make that? All I did with volunteer. I wouldn't think there was any if I didn't have that pool it yet, but if he hadn't done that, what you have been drafted right away right now we're on right now and they will not let methane. Is that that quarter or so you've finished all of your quarters for your first year first year under your belt. And then you were you had enlisted and they called you up? Right? Where did you go for basic training? I went first thought my person. That was the first thought. Okay. And I'm a young kid that didn't know. The ropes. Never smoked. We're good boy. And when I got up the first moan and her, all of this racket and the end of the bar as one ball with this Can. They gave him a cigarette in the disk. Calm down that said right there and I will never never smoke a cigarette. He was going crazy because he wanted when teams. So you saw an example of that. Next day. They called us than to the meso. And they will call analyse. I'm now a stand and rap man. Cool. He said Fletcher and I didn't lamps. He said The third time is a jack. Yeah. Well, because I had been in COVID. They sent me to the ALU room and ours mesh and that's all that they were amazing. They didn't care what your math grade. With a message or you don't allow left. I have my width on that Keith look, feel and Was four of us, four quadrants, then we will number 2. And number 1 was they would select them to go to Palettes. And they will reach in our group and make it till our team at them and got iron. And then they share no pilots, no power. So they will test and what to do this soon understand radio. And that is laid the law on their phone though, here on the table. And this went down at COD. When we got through I call me up and said you made such a high grade in Uganda radios to less and no, I don't want to hear that bb, bbb. And so how did Jesus do? Laid it down then mount that car. And then a war made it go to gammas. And I'd rather not do that with tools. And then moved to solve the Gulf Port, which right near teeth. And I had hydraulics and then I Centene for furlough, come home and I got pneumonia. And as day they're at home. And one day the without the Red Cross and told him where awash in our preachy and our doctor hand. And here was a AMPs. How many were awol? That's my goodness. They think by that. Well, just wrong I can term Illinois. So we call a preachy and dark night came and told the whole story. They had done their job. So that AMP is 10 bag. But mater week I went to camp, we'll keep ray they call and then went back to your hypo hatch when they sent me two kinds. Utah Salt Lake, which is nice city, not a omelette. Those turns is earns K and had some good experiences. The moment they would have. Part is the people's house if you buy the US. So that way, what we're teaching you out there to be what it is, it can't. All we did was they would send in bull close and we will saw numb. They had stuff bold been in Alaska than they have new saw my mass about and we went to films, but no, all we were supposed to be trading forth. He said tools and hydraulics as a mechanic for the air forward. And wasn't the whole story as the one we went over say is you want to add a few weeks the training that they didn't know. But I went with him outfit all of the mechanics and all of the pilots were from 0 airlines. Okay. So they knew what they knew what they were there. You were a fan boy when you are applying common sense about tools and mechanical. Oh, yeah. Yeah. So you knew had a house the sea he stayed in Salt Lake in Utah area. Current theory for how long before you went to the mind as pushy, sack. Sacramento. Little time there, the Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh was a Nisan poet. And some blue, one time we thought, oh no. But then we got our own ship. Diane went to. So that's how you shipped out where you assign to your squad then to, you know, our, our hand, we will just grow replacements. That's what technology has two replacements because there hadn't been any. So by this time it's what the spring of 43. Try spraying a 43 and you get not a great big O shape with how many thousands of other value was spraying of. Now you will spring afford it for you be the writing of a cough for three at our school. Yeah. And I got to the end of foil, $0.43 September. Okay. So spraying a 44 and ship with how many people? Congress, several 1000, thousand. Yeah. There's three big carrying get Europe air morn for days stand on Digg. And one for the heavy and light. No, like this, we get the Chavin New Thought. Use it. A big city with so many lie. That's in New Guinea down and knew that I didn't get off there. We were there two days and we went up the land year, which is north west. Thanks. A1. A1 was halfway between land and poor mode all the way down in the South than the Netherlands home. And if they touched the coconut palm, whether they cut it down or this Thursday, they paid the Netherlands. Darwin, really, oh my goodness. So with keeping track of that, that's another group that's a generic problem. Says that he added deliver something different. So here you are. I say you steam into one place, they leave, turn right around and go down to another. You still didn't know what your job is going to be? I didn't know where I would go under. And in fact, it was another month before the sand as well. We went back down to paint, shaven and clean the fire they had moved the camp from. And one of the vertices, pod Indian, he was older than we were. He would he always made these efforts to be around the office. So he got all our orders and we pull that. And with this ground plane you can catch a ride, you know, long tail with cargo carrier side and my brother was up it sends the pole, which is a bear, Northwestern part of New Guinea and Apple, and stay with him about forward a seat. You briefly. How did you know that? I have a map of awhile there and left womb. When marks on it. Little blocks it say with six to say my sublime. And then I could try fail and that's found our way goes. I was Camille K1 back home. Same time. I found out he was in and the wizard. And he told me You better go back. As I got Mao, you better go back to business. Surprised to see you. Yeah, oh yeah. Yeah. And the way it was, I had this tremendous mag. You may punch out a mahogany low. As much is eight for cross, they will fall on your unknown may end up in there. That's only bore constrict. So he did rather well. But I came back down and they said, We're back to land year. And as our walk in up to that fit, this little skinny guy came out there were the tee shirt on. He says Fletcher, the next time you want to see your brother. Tell me about it. It was the first slide. You Oh my goodness. Well, Kant was with a photo of a cliff and MacArthur's headquarters was radical on this. Am I found that later the water that is, they had tapped that all land for what I will get more money with industrialists. And then when you thought you were so naive, you didn't know when not to get cleared to go visit your brother? Did I bet boat around so long. I'll tell you what they learned from tech. Enough of ROTC. There another guy and when will we Kiesler, they will have trouble with so much Zealand. You close when you went to. Shower, you bet had to be to go because these they had a bunch of Mexicans who were near the then we had the hall in the quarters or whatever they call it and then call the hands-on and they moved them. But we had seven showers. And one time I went on one say they found my pants, 10 and so on. And that is what I had learned and Ad Tech of ROTC rooms, an arm and a ruse to you don't have to do everything in May and smart Eric, you this do you get around corners down? Don't volunteer. Yeah. Yeah. Then in and when I got any in it, then I begin to be trained as a mechanic from these old man and what they were talking about. Oh, you didn't have they didn't they didn't know hat or a car mainland why mass-less fire and theft line that they knew their engine, that name. Do that and then you have T2. So that's what you became proficient that Robert, I was learning service, an airplane bathroom. So what was the next thing they wanted you to do then? Well, how does occur that flew? Well, our fly with them as a backup mechanic in order line. Here, we're going to end up doing that. I like I say, 47 was the biggest transport and they call him the John Doe, skip hours and hours. The 39th squadron of the 378 weighing, which are steel valuable to the allowable today, our warm water Robin be done. And the C4 T7 was you could cut one engine and turn into the engine. You can do that would to the engine of any other plane. They would follow them and they wouldn't. So it was pretty serviceable there. So for you guys, in fact, this ball has been given me this album Mesh from another in it. They, they move. We move from bomb, a pair of paratroopers to all kinds supplies. In fact, we flew on OK, and now what the PDO could you pan and how pipes to make a gas line over, man. I mean, it we did a heavy duty stuff. And you were writing like check on, there could be no backup mechanics should there be any problem. So we're seeing a whole lot of the world and I think we're within about a lot of the air strips that they had place and how much material had been formed, make those fit. I started wondering about all that, yes. You mentioned to me it was the CVs that were actually on the ground. These were in the ground. Imagine if you had you had you had graduate from Tech, that's where they want to add you was rise civil engineer out of our building. This trips. Instead here you are up in the sky and never paid for doing that. I didn't know that at 9900 at the time. Were you part of the drop of the paratroopers was a dropped, I yes. What was your what was your run from where we live, We were at the lag lady, which is nip tech, low bid women and the men DO RE between it. And manila was another one. The Philippines this have styled and of Ireland. But from Wendover, we pick the troops up and, and food. And the first day, we will just move in to that strip. But the next day we'll fly and and because they allow so many paratroopers the first day, the wind currents. And how bad that, the gloom of course. Well, that tried and the Japanese on already. And so then one day we went over, we would drop food. Now we had paratroopers home applied. And when we will enter in that gap was up on this. So. Their role in the shot in the plane. But he hit the facts, things should work and the co-pilot, and I'm standing between Eco power and power. And I get part of the fragments and Nepal I get some in his side. But it didn't stop us, you know, because all the smoke came out of that air conditioned with thought it was the end. You know, if it was from the extinguisher is punctured it to known it with us. I'll see you feel if you felt the pain when it hit me, you know, you realize. But I knew some hit me. But look, that little bubble on the top and cattail the engine 10. And then we realize where it was coming from. But palette already said, we're going to sue the bay. Where the nave is done. Look like Fourth of July, you know. We don't get an email with them. They were no, no, we can't do that. So there's a discussion time. Discussion was heard by a plane that will behind this. There's been told that this fella who's right and he was aware that actually what you were doing was a negotiating with try and help the pilot make a decision. You knew you had a land somewhere and it will go some way. A lot of people on that. Yeah. We have about 24. So where did you know where did he go? We went back to the lender or a Astrid. We didn't go down the way down and have indoor air stuff. Everybody has to see how bad was the pilot injured? Well, it would just particles. I still have this and malaise, breathlessness particles, but it's not damage. And so when they got you, when you land and then they got you right to the thing. Well, why don't you go there. That's when we took our little picture there. For the paratroopers. Graph may check in to see when we got the food. Because we had the dome and then kick it out. And they would stop and May and repeated map and they basically you were hurt. They went late. They they lead a lot. I mean, where? I'm a senior lawyer. Wow. So much excitement for one day. And then how long did they put you in repairs? Well, that went to hospital. They had Mendoza. Then they moved me back to tack low, mid and late t at a 118th hospital. And while I was there, my brother was this Mao from there and he comes to see me. Oh, my workout rumble. You made some of the rubble boys came and it was all home. We add one broke out and then this lieutenant Margaret Wheeler, was a nurse, sees ahead and choose this well-respected. And a Filipino happily. She said that she would get mad to borrow from Macon. There was a Navy pilot and I told some other bores them. In the meantime, we will hold those true. Had given me two chairs shift and I stuck them up and the lion and the shear plane and our total mass that you get those things and bring them down here. And so I gave him those shoes. Why? Sale? To make a wedding. Oh, my God. They never cilia and let you know what happened. Was she from a rural county? It is. Now she's from Hawthorne, Florida Alpha, which is happening there as well. But while I was there, I would go with the Lord to dress dress and this one. And I found out that some of the verdicts were split open. Well, shrapnel of lambs, go dress help you dress the wound. She mean, I also volunteer work in the high. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I did what Matt Bad off, you know, that you may just felt useful Ghana. This can lay up and obey them. So you're going to see a lot of bad stuff and you realize people we're a lot worse off than you are? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. How long did they give you and sick pay? Hours than they are about two weeks. And then what did you get for an assignment? To go back back to the same app? Yeah. Yeah. And but we were at do log, which is right. Diane thereby say we weren't Station them Andorra, we would go in and then we'll with them daily. But for the fall that when we first got from Okinawa, a main from New Guinea to Lady, we were there on the ground that we shouldn't have been. They said this up and I'll read engineer and where they went to Lady Mama before they were supposed to go and read it. But we went there and they send us back up him and 50 miles. And those are the strip. And will that about 45 days? Maybe a week later. The Japanese drop paratroopers homeless. But mag mask garden, we didn't lose any body. But the power is six quadrant loss, good. Many of the Japanese killed and try to find whether Daphnia dropped in the other troops. And I have no say no record or not heard of that. Liu Bei dropped down. You guys were in a secluded area era. They came in. So then did you guys had to go into combat when we had well, they must have been surprised. I do there. Well, they knew they I'm pretty sure because they had been sending planes and and there was engineer group. They were all black that drove this church because that road from do lag went west and no and came out at tag login. And then you come back down the beach like a square. You only had a one way picasso road, one big myth make to a trial. And there's this unit, theta AS part of the time, they had the best bread. And he learned the middle of the war. And when we went in there the first day we'll see the first little village. Pius was this army camp of soldiers, infantry. And there was a power rocks and this guy was sitting up on top of a ball head. And asset birdie wrote it from preside over there. And then in the middle of a jungle. Yeah. Zack claw was in that same. So when we got settled, law came back with a vowel, although boys, they're all gone now. Yeah. Both from this was before we drop troops on Greg though. You see that this time were laid into 44 maybe even to early 40. Now, you yeah, it was right in well, we went up there. Where did the same thing that I like to just ban Christmas. That's probably not the time. Yeah. What about these guys? They're trapped in. I knew were you able to defend yourselves? All right. You didn't lose any weight and lose anybody calls the next moment. You will get I got out of there and they will shoot. And I was the last one to get on that plane. No known that six by six because I1 going to be our target, our target map of all. Yes. So then you went from there back to bed, back down to the leg lag. But we went to tack lobe and then they say we had no assigned play, didn't have orders to be and we add to get the quarter master wouldn't give us any food. And we had to work through sigma CO or somebody will give you any clue. We want to assign one board member. We found that we had come from how land young lady and a l c t inside LSD. Lsd. Yeah. Land and they were small. Land and ship inside of a loan offer him they didn't even know you were in there. Now they didn't. But they weren't flesh and blood needed. Why? I guess it must have been 30 or 48. Yeah. But then then then we got in use in this strip which was close by, not the one that we were assigned. So you we zoomed your flight, right? You rely on your flights with your proof. You ever have to fix anything major on that plane? Oh, yes. So you learn that remove engine and replisome. You learn the lion and you remove wheels and put new task. And then they had some cables that the work to airline yet to check those. That was a steel cable to the ED or replace some of that. So you really had learned a good bit about McCann and Baker again. When did you have not? Well, the war ended in Europe. The day that was in the file away, that would have been early 45. Back to your question or you are. So in 45 we have VE Day but we're still raging. Ryan in Japan, in that whole South Pacific, Not in Japan. And say, how much news did you guys get when you are out there in the jungles of stuff to people. Did they let you know when the war ended in oh yes. You in fact, as Dar there that the treaty grew, that flew down the center American CYP 3A4 and pick up this group. And problem than one of the islands it OK, now Islam or something like that. And I saw that from a distance. And you avoided it. Hello? Yeah. Yeah. So you feel like you were pretty well kept up with what is the only way that biggest problem we would have would get Mayo. Again PAF like you weren't places You weren't supposed through history. But when we move to lose on the up island, we went to lend gay and gov is where the ground troops had gone and the beach there. And we went by and then we came down the clot. The clot was the big is the yield that in the leaves on the head and Nicholson feel them in Manila. And then we went to deal that was in Northern Milan over Mountain Group. We were shot at by the Japanese and got some in weighing, not give all. The aircraft would blush but we weren't close. And did you were you aware that you didn't know I'm sure that they were going to bomb Japan. You didn't. No, no, no, no, there was none of that. But so what they borrow one of those playing, that first one came the cock fail and the head of way off the side. And they shrouded it worldwide cheats on Arduino what was going on? Well, we needed something that happened. And the next day, woody, the next day they told you they had dropped on Nagasaki. And then we'll move from claw. Not you would have been part of the landing on Japan. They were privately. And I'll say this about Japan will move with a video, which is in the South West Japan. The cliff home that they would have badges to look like a honeycomb. They will wait, no, no. We will learn now that we went through and survived. Get from several, you know, that and we flew over NAG SAG at 20th. Favorably, they wouldn't lend us low below, but we could see the structure. Now, let's just black letter. And in fact in ocher now, hours in the Tappan that the head that ship sunk so many ships around and everything they're corrupt, broken 135 Mau Mau over that. When we had 13, see if all the sevens and I grew we had just flown back from Japan when that Tom here at the NIH and I was to stay on a plane. And did man was the only one flowable than their mom and I would get out and turn it into the turn to the wind and the way in. And the rest of them just got beat up high. And four days later, I didn't go on Masha, they said IT career in number 16. And they had a tap and then they tat to then, correct? Oh, my goodness. Yeah. And I made Sergeant like, Wow, all of that was, you know, once you made Sergeant in, the bomb had been dropped by that time. Did did you know it was just a matter of time before you hit? Yes. And I tried to get me to be master sergeant over much quadrant and ask who's going to be new world instructors from the States as you know, we had ordered them. They would not cooperate with SIADH, been used to people when they tell you to do some, you did leave, we found out and then going home enough is anomaly already. There had been a long time. We've been going along and we got back to Seattle 10 o'clock at nine and we got off because they share at the end is down. They they don't complain about it. But together self ship. So we'll only Graham and folded back in the lab and thought five wash what I say in LA. We got all of that. Just the forefoot. Well, So then you were that the bomb didn't drop till 46. Now bomb dropped and 45 September. September 45, yeah, One was the treaty that, well, it was about Let's read what a weak us on. The ETA was an 45, was the Vijay was 46. Noaa, my owl's body forward. 45. So your back and 45. And then did they put you on a train and send you back? Oh, well, about three weeks. Eventually come with a forward Lewis and Seattle. And I found that lady who's the South are those that are not the total length here, there, there, there, there. So eventually though, you meandered your way. My trade back to home. I only went in once they that I had been in before, I wanted to say, yeah. On that trip that your aunt had done a precursor. So you get back home and you got some furloughed. You get out, you have enough points to get out. Quran is then I went that fall. You just decide then you're going to go back to school or what you're gonna do. So you came back here to live with your mama for awhile. Think about that and you decide to go back to school rather bad. Well, they were ready for you. There was a lot of you guys coming back to school. Yeah. And and I still talking about that. A is the faith. And they had a lot. Still a yeah. And you said no, I've been there, done that. I've done though. Yeah, no more war for me. I actually went back to the study crime. But how long did you stay in the corner? You stay that first quarter. And then what major leave it with this too much trouble. You're overwhelmed. And what did you think? I can turn it is what we get. I came back in. I had my brother had been in the telephone come before he win. Is that yeah. So you thought, well, I'll just go with num1. Yes. So you've got a job with Southern Bell Telephone and then right here from rural county said, I don't know what to make our work to make your work and make it with that law now rode a bus, hit him a bursa and mourn back and they were higher and everywhere. There was a lot of veterans coming back, right. Things going on. And that was good. And then stayed with them for a few years. Right. But in the meantime, uncle talking to me about going to mortuary March, which he had been running a funeral home Yay. Then funeral home where width to have a 15 year I guess, along a million node and mill and Georgia. And he kinda let you think that if you get the education, that you can have a job there? Yeah. That sound okay to you here are the hela man that in no, in their whale. And laugh or too short, the layer with some things. So when my mother was say, soothed by Abbas. This land and came back to look at so and we lived there and have a child way, way, way, way. We so had you met Martha by this time I met. You didn't mention where did you meet Martha? Big trouble here, money, big buddy, egg Castro. B. Data, read drugs TO and while I was gone to school in Nashville. We didn't get you to school in Nashville yet. Yeah. When you check, that's where you will know all your company. I went to the phone company and then when I was in the bone, can he tell in going to Nazca and so on live that horse march where? No, Macon, Georgia. Okay. And work to telephone come in they time and day that night. So you would do it an apprenticeship? Apprenticeship. And then I went to Nashville to go to school. Go to and what was the name of that school? Got Tom Jones notation. With that said a regular I mean, a regular school was dormant, yes. Yes, I saw that certification for mutation. And they, most of the professors, professors than the bow that also did this on. It's not right because it would of course be Anatomy and Physiology Oh yeah, sort of thing. And chemistry and lava came out. And so at that point in time where we we come back to that story where you told us you got appointed the assisted try that Because side had chemistry attacked him. Yeah, He would call me and I didn't know what Kim is true of Haskell. Now, here we got you in Nashville. Is this where you met Martha? When I was gone school, they hadn't 0 and 3 are the guys that road with me from layer l. And for psi. And I'd come home on weekends some time. And I came home one day in one Friday. And egg call me said, hey, this on new Gould and time. Okay. You won't day. Yeah. They never heard of us. And choose roommate and where the girl or the egg and the gas are willing, muggy. And they will live in with some relatives. Bone. And my mama was going to mission, they mate and that same NIH. And Venice was enforced that, yeah. Okay. And one peg and that drove up that these girls said not on the sidewalk, on the steps that that half because the women, we'll have an imaginary made and they didn't warms. And that's when I met my head. So he was a blind date. How long did you quarter? Well, as he was about two years won't get mad fit to two. So you took your cache when she was told him as he went to Jackson? Was a school teacher? Yeah. See, business T2. Where was she from? Let's say it really sent a post out of Lafayette. Don't you know why? She was more real now Verne here, but she went to GSE data and like she told you, I would go she was classmate old com yeah. Flannery O'Connor. That's right. So that's where she went to school, got her cervical and so she wrote teaching. And you record her than you were living in Nashville? Living here for sine. And it was a long distance. And then when I came finished school, I went to Millan. That how far away it was that close step is south of ways Barb but no, no author states bar and some mammals about. Okay, This is a weird, It's not exactly geographically located. So it was a long distance relationship and wires, quasi was his teeth and a Jackson. She got the mumps and got the moves that oh my goodness. Oh, my goodness. Everybody was saying you got married. What year did to to gender section 998 to your mama was still live in it? That mirror here. What did you get married? Where? In Menlo, Georgia and her Oh, you want the flame? Malthus. Sister's home. Okay. Because that data that about 10 days before we were They said no bone in there when Really Wow. He had been sick. Yeah. So then once you got married, then you know, that went bad. Tamil and Millan for two years on that mesh work in there. What did you think about that business? Did you like being in the mortuary business? I liked it. Who's the person they allow what you didn't like, the person that you like, the actual field you were in. So you felt like you to spend your money wisely to get that certification or oh, yeah. And you pass the last exam I'm in the practical exam. Am a guest. Paul? Oh, man was on the board and he had a real float. So how did you make a decision then? The inwardly well, my mother was sick. She had had some heart problem. Was she getting on then how are young by that time? Late send is not well. She died and 80 shoes 81. Okay. So but the fact of the matter was I came badly, needed you to come back and late afternoon and Martha was happy enough to do that for you. And so you move back here and we start the next chapter. So here we are. We are back and Monroe County and Forsyth, Georgia. I'm foresight. When you come back, look after your mama. And by this time it's 950, 2 and 4, 0 times 54. You gotta get a job. You can't you leave the home business. What are you going to support your family with? That? That's a question. What did you do first time? So men launched Feed come and got to know a lot of p that I'd been wave. And then this plant was already doing. So may plane and male job. But they want to sign the bill or modern thumbnail. The band Malin. And near the people than his wife had men the SEC, they live, had a little office but torn about TLS up by then, and they built a new build. And then I went to work phone and the neighborhood what komplett Von lumber lumber company and where they local people and able to local people. And my daddy, as a mayor carrier had hip that bother. You had a job for the post office because they had so many kids and there was an oppression. So they remain aware that happen. What goes around comes around it there. So you got a job and what was your ML hours? A check and this check and lumber on our first went there costs. We had little thumbnails in the woods and they would bring the lumbar before they own the head somewhere. And then the power system for fifth to sixth started bill in this modern and male. And a German. We bought a gang mail from a gentleman and a German man came that upper together. And we only had one man in town that can speak German. And when this dove would get Paul is dead, I would call a man and we would transfer that way and had to have a translator. I try. Now, this mill came at the best time ever because building booms were Des Ryan, nasa boy, you talk about meeting a need. They were there, they might have done really well with ship lumber to Indiana for native people to create the VM there. And then the AMA and send it to North Carolina to the finish. And that our bow or go in the air and you wonder how those things happen and yet they do. And we were the first ones to ship chips. Georgia craft was in Macon, but they would've taken they took the pulp wood and made their own chip. Well, we'll ship and am a box car, not an open call to Panama City than a national paper. And they made stuff for England. That. So we'll just go all over the world to make China and find some and then Georgia craft I'm a couple years would except and we ship them open hop cause it's more than when we just think lumber. The house. There's all kinds of products that you generate. I remember interviewing somebody from middle Georgia that made for office furniture and children's furniture and things of that sort. What all? What all. Yeah. And I know they got things shipments of different kinds of stuff from all of your warm spring. We weigh only had no keel and drag number. Okawa. I I've drawn them. Okay. And we also ship hog wood poplar and laid it on the would come from Jacquard with it with them a 50 mile radius, and we didn't go further than that. So within 50 miles you could harvest or not. I'm bringing in the end with the lumber company own the land that it was hybrid is from, are you from no local forward but from different Thetas are a lot of land. But they usually about the timber from well across or oh, the whole job just going out and finding the ladder and contacted go skating at the pole like that. And that we had up to four people on the payroll. And then you had your logos, which was 1215 turning into a really pick it there at all of the paperwork. Oh, did you really were the lead pencil and a calculator and the telephone and no computer, no computer. That was before the day or the day. And we made we made a payroll every week. A week. Wow. But you like the job? I was at home. How did things we worked on this house. So your blood after you your mom passed away, you bought this adjacent land. It was owned by somebody else, said yeah. Without this prompt, how much is how big is this property? Well, we had a 80 and 100 and 35 acres, but then we bought eight OH, and traded 80 acres plus money for this from over here. That's had a pano me. And you tell me that we already talked about the fact that this part of the house was from way back in the day. And then you start at nine and make it their home in 1960s was the sixties and the 19 sixties. A way of how far away are you from, actually from Foresight here, 3.5 into town. So it was right. Never been into the town, reached the outskirts. Desk, got through with the streetscape, Main Street program that you're close to smart. About a mile away, you are much closer to smart, which is right here. We're right. At one time they had to saw males GIN and cause cellular stores. It's all gone away. Oh, it's gone. Now they'll have post-op his home. And how long did you stay with the Von lumber? I said, yeah, that's pretty much the big career. I had a clot my left leg in an hour to hour was 65. So our that so they could get matter take care of us. And the doctors said to them was that they had and were bad. So go ahead. Because Lego and the young adopt some sort of let's try something and then they tried your candidate and dissolve the clot and it went whoa, that's too close. I was to close on that. Yeah. Thank goodness for medicine. Well, and somebody won't trust some new at that time it was considered a radical and a voter saying I thought about how am I going? Trauma tract, legend, tractor guy got mown hay and, and raked in and bailed it, cuz won't work. What we're talking about now is the fact that working at the lumber company one, the only thing you've been doing all these years, but you've been run in a farm, so to speak. I'm in a minute handling whatever comes with all of that. For j sees. Until you 35. Then we started the Quantize, right? 69. And you were the first chart. Remember a charter member, how 1? First present. But third one, you early in the game for them and then 72. To get started, the first mineral can in his dark Croesus. And hours made present that style, that, and that's very historical that you were the first president. And the idea is to preserve the history of what started was to preserve the depot. O prime is now with the Woman's Club, try the hand and then they couldn't. And and sometimes we hit that sense. And by how does Depot, how old was built in 809 is C. Okay. So wasn't even as old as his house. But hey, as i now the depot right in there, which has made our rock and it was built and 846, wow, and we have acquired it in recent years because they don't tear down and so you saved it. And we say, Do you have a museum? Have a museum in, in the, in the Modibo them, which is really appropriate. It's really nice to have a lot of hay neologism I, that people continue to research and such. But it is appropriate to use it for something like that. So that's really say it's right across from TIF college. And tiff was one of the older female college than they'd just been closed. But now the State Department of Transportation home or they do own it now, I did not do something with it there. Then they moved there from line seven, different divisions, division to move. So that then they look after the present system Over the stain and a small local. Well, that's easy because you've got so many. I'm in South Jordan. Prisoners in prison. Yeah. A die or topic. Now let's go back and talk about MRSA because you marry you and Mary and Martha got married in 1952 and you came here, but she had been teaching and she took some time now and you had a jam and 58. Okay. And they led a teats pretty close to May 17th? Yeah. And weights. They didn't let him do that. Yeah. So she saw C is a commercial Teton they couldn't yet about, alright, good measure, pretty valuable. And altogether Martha's career of teaching with how many years for it to just imagine that she was at Mary Pearson, right? Yeah. She hit out in Mayer and worked at Lockheed. That sum to the and then caned for the side. And then let jacks and then came back to us. As you've been here. Them all as tiny. Boy, she's had her fingers on a lot of people. Mercury at rosa. Lot of people that came down the line, yeah. Yeah. Influenced a lot allies. Let's talk about Jim. Tell me about what was his career. Had him I thought he was gone that day. Golf, we'd been there. He had mom prime definitely. Take it doll a ball games. And then when I would work in the company would bath phone that bath 01 we set in the stands and there had been two bars all the time. And this thought everything on loan when they see me, sad, they've gone to Georgia. He went to the dark side, went to the doctor. I had role appeal, went into pharmacy. He said to stop though Ethan is death and that he worked at a local growth drugs though, and set up that compare with the ethanol. And then they ended there then went to work with CVAs. They're everywhere. Everywhere. Any luck that they they work in here. This I am here. So he's still isn't working for CVS and the Jim Mary Mad Flow doesn't remember how long did they have to look to go yet. Tell me your name. What's your daughter and last name was Jim's wife named Tammy. Okay. So he was Tammy Web. So she got there is they got married here. Okay. And and they have two daughters, the oldest one. And then before they got married. Jim had purchased to make does that Joel and our land also heat, you don't have to worry there around that. Yeah, right down here. Right. And the daughters your granddaughters, the oldest one in one of them is am a Caitlin. She's the same pain and do and so she'd ambulate Taylor is 15. So teenage girls to those that they combine CEO lot, wow, yes. Spasm when they need them. Well, what could be better? Grandma? They're active. Amazon sock. And they won the written as time. But that played site pass out of Atlanta. And I believe all of those professionals, do. You don't think that they would? Well, it, That's another store that education is. That it's all right to land some time but something GO not to do. I made if they go play Pope fish, play for private school, play with the Pratt. Who you saying they should put one again. I like that should mix, well, is injustice to the disadvantaged to the kid. Which of the girls is it? Is artistic? You meant when Emily, Emily is the one who's budding artist. Allah's mobile, the Tombow. She's a soccer player animal, and right now she works in the afternoon with a bed mayor and so she loves that. Kim. Do you think either one of them might go to Georgia Tech? I hope so, but not what she's already jaws dissolve. Yes. He's going to go to veterinary, got some persons and then some that seed grow. Sounds good. Maybe Emily will come to last thing. I'm going to the industrial design or architecture program. She could mean they either one, I'm am Liz more inclined to be the one who might come to? Well, she, she, she absorb some of play if she says and more introverted, maybe she's a great artist. Well, that's wonderful that you have them. I want you to tell me a little bit about the relationship that you and Martha had with Bubba and Rose Mary, your dear friends? We did everything together. Yeah. We were asked to. Bug lived about two and I am out. Well, we can the country is nothing in the afternoon and I will have a horse and that rod and we would made hay way. We might come back in Omaha, so we'll wait till Ray is and let you guys grew up to you? Yeah. And we in the same class and school rode ME and love. And they coded and ask you, Hey, there. I used to bind thought that yeah. And then once you, Mary, Martha, Martha and rosemary, that was Edgar, then fine. I'm above one road may say. We would once a week we have up would give the kids know. And most of the time it was an MA Yeah. We all came long. So if we came around and walk around outside, there'd be a whole lot of memories out there. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Road may. And as I've said to you, then, I always thought you the cyst. Yeah. When you grew up with her? Yeah. Yeah. They were growing up together and spend the fact that she had Martha got to be such close friends. May have beautiful, isn't it? Just happened they were suited at their best friends. Everyday. Everyday, everyday friend. They go gold. And they're both teachers there. Yes. She was a law burn mark yet, you know, rosemary without Miller about books. You tell me she's got you read more books than I did. I would know I'd read but that handle this. Oh, my leg got a walk and stand him as much as you used to. So now you've got you yeah. See eight people like that keep us rate and that's wonderful about the world. You can go anywhere in the world, but can't come well. Reread and one about in Lima and his title from South Carolina to the start of it. And Leanna, there, when there was only a timeless and knock Who's there. And you're here at early history. Is. Whoever did it did really good job. You mentioned to me that you were very, very fond of history in general, so that Oh, yeah. That's your kind of figure out how far away from it we are from where Rosemary lives. 2.5. So again, it's that same tool and handling out. Yeah. Why don't you guys by the road? Yeah. It's easier on a horse. Oh, yeah. Imagine you are. The pastor will be there that but I'm I'm thinking you're not ride your horse. There's so much anymore. No. No. But you still running candle here? Oh yeah, that's something to think about that you're managing all that. So this the width of the man who did this. And I say 23 buddy dad and 35. And she had a few slaves, free or foe. And she had a cotton patch that silent for a, and she made enough money to survive than they had daughters. And that was the none album, no connection with them anymore. Did you buy the property from those original owner? No. Center is about the fourth lamb on, I guess I might get sold out of the family down there and nice to know the stories behind them now, yeah. On Weibo that you could cap to chicken than the flow or lab, the side. Lot of course it had and then kept. It must be one of the earliest buildings in the county. Well, as for next to it was Canada was chartered in 2002. And there was already some here. And that job title was already in the camp. This great big mama and the amount of time. Yeah. And what he would do with this codon before the railroad? He would put his cotton wagons and they go rod just the Georgia the live. Thankful that that's a good long ride. It was more than her and him. Then in the codon exchange on August. But I'm sure his name because they've got a lava that history. It must be there somewhere on the wall. I'm ought to be on the line. Yeah. I've been interesting little side trip to take them with them. They have never studied that. Yet. You think we covered just stories. That is we could do well, I'll say this that we would no one will want to or that the CCC's and Deb BPA, those programs gave skill people that did the one ohm and the high they came before, but they prepare people for what lay ahead without even one other thing I didn't say about CBs. When they hear a beach that take place, which they were the really have. They had an ice cream machine was already operating because we used to laugh or badly or hitting me, take an ice cream maker. Greenberg, I'll be gone. Now that's the story no one ever told me before where we did. So they were privileged characters there, huh? Did a great job that I did. And then this in India, they described how many fuel tanks they had the bill. Well, it had to have a tack a sudden that and then to get the appeal. When you think about it, yeah, there's a lot of that comes a little jab. Whether the Loire planted oh, not been planned. And he was. Then trade will own lots drip out of Tokyo 12 days after the sun. And, and we'll have one or this lattice planes. They will make and that was small. And they're made amount a ball from wood. And in like matte layer flight, hand apply one down because they were the Kamikaze. He went home time. Yeah. I never saw the Kamikaze eat more than ours and below that for real, I never saw one do that, but I saw ships, so they had been hit. Well, there's a lot of essay newsreel footage we have are the workhorse. However, that is beyond our imagination that could've happened. So it didn't, they didn't have to be really flight worthy because they were only making one trip. They knew that trap he would have been in their culture, it would have been ashamed for him to combat it. To to get him yeah. And he didn't saw other than that planes, one tank that were much bigger than the Jeep. And it was it do log in. The lady was all women. I am, but I never saw much of that strong token. Now, what I'd like you to tell me, Jack is about the trip you that to make down to the War Memorial. Tell me about that. Another time. When you see these kids today, weather shared around the neck or a ring? That's a cat ah, than most I saw was an open now and that things should be turned around. You look in that home, in the back of it has got a beautiful coloring. And there's some mock and I, and I wonder why today we see these good when they saying why did they tunnel Miranda and they probably don't know. Yeah. In November of 2009, I was invited to go with the full fly it on-the-fly route. And we left the day after a nova, my lab who went on the coil. So all the fanfare was done the day before. But we left play at bullet seven o'clock in the morning after breakfast and all the stuff given to us. We didn't stop at birth, did not stop until they got to their Atlanta airport on the App tray and they had top traffic. It's seven o'clock on the moon. We want a line. And we would but we went we went through security. They will bear the US as that and I didn't for some added, but the board that was lucky math to me. They made him take his shoes off, his belt off, and then 10 room. And he's a teacher. Oh, Lagrange hashCode, that's the way they do all the time. They do that. Well, we know there, but, but for, for those who might not know that here the story, the outer group honors World War Two veterans and they're actually putting you on the plane to take you to Washington DC to see the world War II Memorial. And when we hit the airport, I look that the linen that salt a bagel factor that is in the palette says You all look now. And then actually a liner for everyone. Why we went people to pay for very touching experience for it. And we were we had lunch right at the Memorial Day, set it right up to them or they had a boxplot. But though came and spoke to 0. That's how you guide somebody a different all the times. Yeah. A's he's in bad shape. Pk 13 because hands-on read. I don't know where they can make in them. I don't I don't know. I read occasionally something in the paper. And that's one thing about an atomic bomb might draw it, but that's that's the best mum more is ahead is Bill. I'm not saying that. Oh, yeah. So it was an honor you've got the Pacific and the European. Do they do in those that can't walk well, they take you in a wheelchair or if you're in a wheelchair. So Sal requested that and and and this board that push me and then there was a buddy of mine them. Now the one that walked. And you had a time and see, you know, and then they turned right around and flee back. You want to go back and say Edit 1030 and that something what a long day? Yeah. Was that while they had fairness breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we fear that. And we went to Arlington and saw the chain that the God well, we're well prepared for you. Yes. There's a lady. Can you think of a name? But she coordinated were the main and I think every county divided in different region, an area. She told at that time it to $350 per person to make that hand. They got that again. Yeah. Well, they raised the money all the time. And then we had a reunion couple of months after they inject you just to say hello to everybody. Yeah. Here in town and no favor. Yeah. All in favor. That's where they have a nice well, that's pulled out and then somebody thinking about you and remember, yeah, and appreciating your service. It's a wonderful thing. He said they laid out the red carpet for a ride. It you didn't woven and somehow look and act in an old Well, I'm really glad you had that experience. Like your heart that deserved every minute of it. See, I'm six foot four and hours. When DO Woodstock and and he said, Hey, surely they came by and said something to me, well, in the course, so you would stand out the proud because most of those guys has shrunk right now. So well, when I was in the service most album for my high enough, why they happen that way? That sounds unusual. Normally when downtown Tokyo, those four of us and those Japanese cars, they had gotten up there. And we will then that train system was working fine and we rode on it and we'll get some new. There was several women came in old dress, you know, we got back, let him sit down and we were told, no. We're instructed not to eat. Rarely. There was still the worried, well, hire you.
