We hold these truths to be self-evident that all people are created equal. All the filler down by their Creator with certain a union of man rights and a man vs All right. If. Liberty and the pursuit Do you remember your high school. SIMIC school yes let's spend a few more minutes today to get the experience made yours and attitude can opt to Mars the probability. That we human beings can be truly happy. Now who are should we do this. To me is and several years ago the Princeton Review did a survey of major colleges and universities to find out on average how happy their student bodies were. Best which college screwer best second most unhappy were the right good. If they were off to a worse. That's not our best Texas A and M. was for that's not bad because here's where you have a good quality of life but maybe in Parliament where you have to revert to get your degree and when you rock at it the degree is actually something the more tended to be less happy the party is of course rated themselves very very happy but there's a second more important reason we need to look at happiness. Statistically valid studies chair. That people who rate themselves as consistently happy have less money misses by headaches and stomach aches and cone wars and less major illnesses like heart attacks and strokes and cancer. It's called a mind body connection and Frances is a health class. It behooves us to look at this. And you took the room service. A As part of this class. You just getting remember. That tells you how happy you are eight years from zero to forty five happiest thirty five zeroes unhappy. So you already have an index as to how happy you are we will see how the material in this lecture applies to you based on your Happiness Score. My name is most important and all of the seventy odd years I've been all wrong. I have all me the first eighteen of them were not associated with George or Ted just like you I was a student here back in the late fifty's early sixty's becoming educated in physics nuclear science nuclear to neighboring. Went to protect went to work to take in sixty eight as assistant dean of students. And that's right. I took things as assistant dean of students it became obvious that my knowledge of protons neutrons corkscrew on to a neutron to fusion equations was perhaps not the best background to help Tech students achieve their goals. So I went back to Georgia State University and became educated in counseling in psychology with a focus on what you read about development and adolescence psychology and it's from that background much of this afternoon symposium will be drawn. OK. I became director of what's now the Office of International Education in the early eighty's and I retired to take in one nine hundred ninety eight after thirty years of service. My three years I was there were twenty seven clubs and organizations. I read day almost five years five is a grad student. I founded in its present form. And in that capacity took a sabbatical from Georgia Tech in one thousand nine hundred two and hike with two thousand one hundred and seventy hours of the Appalachian Trail in eighty seven days an incredible experience I have I have saved founded steady bad in its present form and in that capacity in ninety four I was the first to really defer the cities to And the onsite director at Oxford. Then in ninety six I. Did the when to quit or down and up which is the study abroad program then known as the Pacific program where you go to Australia New Zealand to play in China the islands really fantastic which tell you all that and I still read too as even after I had retired on up through the early two thousand. Now I told what psychology ten ten a really great coworker throughout the ninety's it was the psychology of adjustment to college ally Great course that was a precursor to G.T. one thousand. I stayed here so I was advised that I had to advise the present Scholars Program guest lecturer for tribes classes and organizations and as a mentor to Tech students. Now that's a little bit about me I knew that I was going about you. I mean your freshman heads up a smattering how many of sophomores more OK juniors a good number seniors all you said the best ally I have had to graduate and it's getting close right now. How many of you are in state hands out. That's what you are if you have any out of state. Cryosphere NO HOPE scholarship player but out of state. How many argued live on campus hands up. That's most if you have any of it off campus mostly upperclassman and you rode in a car visionary and mechanical electrical chemical it's about head for the College of Science math chemistry biology physics. Knowledge of computing the representation out and out in college level studies knowledge bases ministration just change the name College of Architecture and fine arts. OK you're normative that's pretty much the standard distribution in Georgia Tech they are how many of you as a result of your homework assignment know or have access to. You must make start your absolute control your hostility square or and your status back to life score. You mean about it. Come on you to nor do you know the access to it. You wouldn't have to bear in today's sim problems. Are a ray of gold and a gamble like the fast. I was leading a back pack for all I J fade out your recreation door to Ted Now he's back packs they have on the weekend. You leave campus Saturday morning drive to the trailhead hike all day Saturday camp out Saturday night. Hikmat extended morning drive back to take Sunday afternoon and you steady Sunday night. OK when you're with everybody. There better too. On pit for thirty six hours. You get to know everybody pretty well. And we will hike in back to the cars and behind me was a delightful freshman named Scott and out of the clear blue Scott says May are you see Mike a very happy person. And yet you're not married. How do you explain that. Now in psychology this was known as a teachable moment. And here's how I answer is God I had said God I have tons of friends I have friends who are married who are very very happy and I have friends who are married who are so happy. They may not stay married very long and I prince who is single. Who are very very happy they can go when and where they want to and I have friends who are single who are miserable they feel like they're lonely all of them time and scut I have put into Richard Roth really happy they have everything their heart desires and I have friends who are rich who will slit wrists tomorrow in all probability because I am or do spend their time worrying about Will I lose my ass the. It's a lot as my assets and Scott I have friends who are poor or. The billion happy. They don't have the basic necessities of life. And I have friends who are poor as church mice who are incredibly happy they really thankful for what they do I am and Scott here's where the rubber hits the road on their Tech students who have a very very happy they feel like they would see their potential and I know Tech students have a four who are absolute neutrally miserable. They have no life. They go to class they study they sleep eat at it and I know students who have a two zero zero zero are really miserable they can let let themselves down let their parents down. They're not doing well. But Scott I know students who have it too who are happy but yon believe. They are to me they party. And so we went through just a litany of more opposite people who live in the city live in the country or people who are attractive people at home and when I got to this it's got how do you deduce from this and he being pretty sure I've said you know our happiness probably doesn't depend on external circumstances. It's something inside of you and I said you get a gold star that really got to do is look at the Raben characteristics of happy people as determined by the research I've begun my as an Ed Diener. These are two psychologists known as the group of happiness. Who have steadied tape ends I have reasons of people in America. Japan and Western Europe. Tens of thousands but gave him the same little satisfaction with a large scale you have that you had for as one hundred mark assignment for this guy asked. And in addition to that they ask him a good zillion questions about themselves and in a car light their scooter with the answers to the questions. And what they found is. There are six characteristics that happy people and where they are what almost always heo and there found more that appear with a high enough frequency that it's worth giving some attention to it and it's interesting if you squint or May on that scale you unhappy. And that had better than most people to what they found was the unpack the people the characteristics were either the absence or the opposite of the characteristics of the happy people so that was good information both ways. And so from this research we can see a lot of cool stuff. Now this is Sam patent we don't give it to you and for we do overseas I'm going to you probably. Number two just type the eleven main points in some of the some points in your laptop or write them down. This will reinforce that if you actually go through this process of typing or writing and number three. You don't post modern lecture notes on the class web page after the rector and you can print it out. You have it very thoroughly visually I'm sorry. In addition to bubbly and so you can look at it if you're a visual learner so you have all three. And before we start we always ask what comes first the chicken in a big moving. Do you think perhaps people are bear with a genetic proclivity to be happy. We find all kinds of things about people who've been in the genome. Maybe some sports fans bad it doesn't matter. But not if you buy into a proclivity to happiness therefore you do you just assume these eleven characteristics whatever you're having this is what I mean the one where by developing it's here first. If you can rise above it by not doing it you can fall below it. It's up to you. And happiness as you have probably gathered is a big deal in our society here Time magazine cover story on happened it's really good but nerves are going to have a reference to a lot. Of material the notes published on the class weapon. Would take if you are how you can find this. Magazine online follow a really good credit reach out about half in the Senate. The Economist published was a rod comes out of London published all over the world cover story Happiness Happiness is a big deal. I'm going to give you a matter we have a references in the lecture and they're all in the notes you don't have to copy and I am. And I'm going to give you the characteristics in random order. But I did use number we had maybe one in Myers and Dana did the research with this group was never a fair war and what was five was number three etc These are random or. So let us begin first characteristic of happy people they love themselves in psychobabble business call having high self-esteem. And a student is in college you know. You drive yourself into rays with your mind and your body. You know yourself with your mind through practice Kalpana stage self-taught. In my farm for good food if you don't believe this. I suggest you get rid of it and Roland Burris. Plastic self-taught. You simply talk out loud or you are not quite as good you mentally go through it you pat yourself on the back when you've done good so far. When you come out of a quiet holding in your hand a quiz that has not just an A on it. It's got a one hundred. Great opportunity for a positive self taught. You look at one hundred and you say you know this is a Bell had patients. The fact that I've got it together academic I know how to study I know the importance of getting sleep before quizzes and other course going to choirs doing homework. I know how to do all the academic stuff. This tells me. I've got it together academically. That's process after a bit reinforcing or you go to some gathering a wedding reception a party or whatever. People are milling around talking. And you find somebody who is. Just as bad or met tricity between the two of you and when the event is over when you say wow I really enjoyed meeting you. Let's meet at Starbucks Friday at three and take I have been where we left off and better post and say is absolutely. I suppose you are getting to know you and talk and you seem like a really neat person. And you walk away from it with positive self thought. You say it's so cool that I know how to find balance with people that I know the importance of smiling and being a good listener. And talking in terms of their interests. That's really good but I'm socially adroit to the point where when I would interact with people they want to continue that interaction positive self to do it. Number two when I was helping a body. And you start off by giving I have really. Demographically age group that rule the best eight to ten hours sleep per night but minimum seven to highway. And you know if you're not getting this it would be really great for you to make a calendar and schedule and put sleep on there. So you start getting into a really important minimum seven hundred number two you got to the body right you are nutrition in this quiet number through you've got to exercise it. And we've done research right good tech and health and performance science that has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt exercise increases self-esteem we know there are a number of you can improve substances. You can not abuse substances. Those are the fairways you love yourself with your body. Second characteristic of happy people is they have all about the paddle. Now here in your mind's ribs type comes into play sports fans. You will have to do you mass break type head home heart to this quiet. Fan letters first letters an urn I. If your first why doesn't he. That means you prefer. To focus on the whole outside of yourself and the people in it and to love those people. If you and I meet you prefer to focus inward and then it'll raise it with a good beverage and a magazine and read and think about your about your philosophies your thoughts you look inward. Both sides can run don't have other people it's just a little easier for an easy and I have to put a little emotional energy into it. So the only way or how you monitor it. Type of affects your ability to love a lot of people now a lot of preparing them for things that are really important member A and if you want to become a master in sports fans I mean a master. Family bonds with other people. I suggest you grow on not to the bookstore. And get two books one copy of Bill Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People came up with six principles that cause people to like each other good is the 1930's and since the end sociologist and psychologist had a heyday with those principles have validated all of they really work. Ready. Mr and that hundred seventy those psychologists manual Smith discovered. But you have to say I have to scrape the corner you miss there you have to share yourself with other people and get them to share themselves with you and therefore this is really well written out in the when I send off feel guilty by manual smear the importance of self disclosure her putting together got seven principles to those if you want to learn how to form bonds with people. Number two the second thing about having other people. The Norden psychologist Harriet stack seven. Has what we psychologists call the behavior definition of law. It comes in several different forms has a five a like. The rabbinate comparison is to be committed to helping the US. I'm not part of anything they want to be in the present and become everything they want to become in the future not about me it's about the other person and of course when two people have this kind of land for each other. It's awesome. But there was greater than the sum of its parts and sports fans I don't know if you've ever been in the Russian share our interactions you have to want to be in a relationship. If you want insight to have been this deeper sense you have got to do it the rubbish travelled us got paid around for thirty years incredible it only got to the chapter second chapter is low and he gives insight to this and said to have been this deeper meaning you cannot believe this is so important that if it were going to other state of Georgia. I would be the legislature to say in Georgia. You can't get a marriage license until you've passed a written test in the lab chapter of the road less traveled. It's very poor pay. If you have to take a written test to get a driver's license. How much more important in our society are stable families the it was rather color straight line. It would cut the divorce rate in in my opinion. So you do that comment about law here in the universe this majority of. We have a fabulous centenarian Research Group. We study the Georgians who lived to be one hundred and we found out all the cool things about it but one thing they all had in common. They had pasta Russian ships with friends and family. They had learned to have a people. And one of the it was also that they lived to be one hundred. And lastly. The great musical sort of Fortune fifty's or what not. I say to Guy Ritchie Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. They wrote sound to me South Pacific carousel feel about an album. It has been said that Richard Rodgers. The family value had to A for it in one favorite where Here it is. I bet it's not a banana peel you ring it. So it's not a sad song to you saying it. And the Lord in your heart wasn't put there to stay calm as the law isn't to you give it away. That's one of the few things in the world my fine fellow free and such at the moment you're given a fair bit you have to others hate the more you hate the most hateful person you become and I think you are the more you manifested behavioral characteristics and anger the moment angry person you become I vote for the characteristic of happy people they believe that they are in control of their life. Took no locus of control test and you screwed you the internal or external If you screw an external locus of control that means you kind of Marilyn's believe you really born in the we're all you can do is react what goes on around you but the crew who stick to external locus of control is the person doesn't believe there is any color in between their effort in their outcome. No matter how hard or how learned by the way work. The outcome is Redwood dice internal locus of control. How about believes I best of my fate captain of my so. If I want something to happen. You better believe I'm going to make it happen and that my effort correlates directly with my outcome but this in perspective. Take two students well into a lot for Lex don't want to control their medical I asked them a quiz that both Mike and A. Student with the internal locus of control looks at the A and said this I knew this mature call. I studied for roots before the quiz I got sleep the night before came to have a classes. Did I had a whole new art. I knew the material. No I earn the student an extra low control looks at the area and says Well why don't you know that dice roll up in my favor. I just happened to study the subject that the professor quiz us about on the TED I could have just as easily failed had he gone another direction as though his efforts had nothing to do with the outcome. And it's probably no surprise to you. Tomorrow or that if we take a possum college students with an external locus of control and average their G.P.A. and take a fountain college student with an internal locus of control and advantage then G.P.A. in turn will be higher. When you have to test to be valid groups behind the internal locus of control of the higher the G.P.S. So if you scored really due to the really extra mile. You don't have a good G.P.A. You can go to counseling and go through some exercises that make you more internal. I recommended and of characteristic use the optimistic. And let's find this by coming at it from the direction. With what's called a series sounds a mantra. But his suicide does him or herself. They say to him say it was I'm very good you will never good. The way I was no good and tomorrow. It's not going to bed. I'm probably going to be worse. But the optimist said I'm great. You're great rough great to Mars can be even better. And optimism is a really big deal in our society we do research about it. Here's a research paper for law and what University of California at Berkeley research found that optimism associated alarm goes right. How about them apples people over fifty who is a positive experience with an average of seven point five years with A.M.D. have been those who did not this much was optimised had half the risk of only bad. OK I'll vote for that one gust of those CROSSFIRE. Then those who were mixed or pessimistic optimist had fewer problems as they a few limitations less pain more energy. And if you're not sure whether or not you are optimistic. You are for and your friends want to you know you're a pessimist or you're an optimist. If you're pessimistic. They'll grab the boat lowered optimism by mail. You see going from testing good stuff adequate is where you can find out how optimistic or pessimistic you are and if you're pessimistic to take you to a series of exercises it'll make you more optimistic. So be optimistic highly desirable characteristic of heavy people it is they focus on the outside of it. So I don't know that this is the Myers Briggs type again that's almost the definition of the preference. If you're any you prefer to focus on the world outside of yourself. And I was just a small motor on energy and you had a good the focus on the role of Saudi your sales study showed that three are particularly important. Number on the evidence Yaba get a job human beings operate better within structure and I just give your life structure. Hey you got a job right now where is it a student at Georgia Tech pursuing your degree. And then only it doesn't give you a life structure. Up at seven Challenge right first class today try to set nine. Go to lottery and study from ten to twelve blocks from Ground Zero won class from one to two. From two to ten or go to say R.C. and work out four to five relax on a six supper six to seven hang out with friends seven to twelve study. Next day repeat it give structure to your life you know you can't believe and it's a good thing in American society. A job is important in a different right. It's part of our identity. How many times have you introduce yourself and write to your parents introduced you. They dread Goodwood to a free and at a wedding reception and said hey I want you to meet my daughter Sally she's a mechanical engineer George day. That's your job right now mechanic engineering and they tack that onto your name as part of your identity or you meet somebody into some of the gathering in the person says writings Ignatius be done living I'm an engineer with Lockheed. They tack their job barn as part of their identity. So it is a big deal. Our second way purpose on the world outside of your sale is to enjoy the power of. Which now in this age of sexual harassment we must be careful how we use the power touch OK. Got to be careful but psychologists and sociologists had a really crap crawl back in the only nineteen hundreds. When For now they had no better bees were dying in Africa years in London and they were not genetically deformed they were not starved they were not malnourished they were not sick. I just died when the Ministry of Health sent people in to investigate. He found that the babies who were dying were not changed. They were given a bottle Persephone So it was placed between their lips their diapers were changed very quickly. But they were never picked up inhaled the babies who were picked up and head off the loom into those who were not touched died it was a wake up call touch is really important as a lot to it here in our present society tetchy is really only appropriate into a ritual touch which is a handshake. And if a bond of trust exists. Band of trust with your mom and dad so when you have a similar time you give them a big. You tussle with your brothers and sisters you put it on brownish over and over sorority sister attorney brother because a board of trust is they are without a bond of trust. It's not appropriate. It's really interesting that the American daily Association asked the dairy farmers you know the guys that have two different four and want to milk a cow and they have both a fabulous ritual and a big bond of trust. I did a volunteer you'll do stand up. Stand side raise where they can see is that see it now but Sam when you go in for interviews before we talk about the dairy farmers big Should you give a strong handshake. Communicate self-confidence characteristics have a strong handshake the ritual touch this skinfold when the found in the finger must guide such bang say that that's a strong handshake. If that's good for a bad touch then fish then fish. If if the interviewer tries to give it to you man. You put it back and do it again where you make the handshake strong and that's women and men. Have to have a strong handshake. Were the best of the American Association these guys get together they used to milking cows a point in the morning they have a really great handshake. Do this and so the members of the American daily Association shake hands like this. John is that I am going to thank you thank you so much but enjoyed the power to legitimately OK And the third right. You focused outside of yourself. If you give me good. You may not realize this but in college but can't remember the of giving to others in have. And in little ways. If you give a good ROI You can give up eight ten twelve precious hours of your study time doing the read. Tutorial to tutor an underprivileged kid in math and reading that's that's give it a big way or give up the weekends to help build a house for a less fortunate family to Habitat for Humanity. You can give in the ways you come back from the post office the really going to care package your grandmother has just sent you and you meet a lot befit now afraid and you say here have a chocolate chip cookie. That's given in a little boy who both. Have been big ways given little boy. And the six characteristic of happy people is. They say fair. Until I find it. But you and I both know that normally in our society. People who find meaning find it as an expression of religious faith but there's other ways to find meaning in life. What's interesting to me is. When I said to do the same I have a place for comments and it's not only uncommon for people to write a comment something like this because I search for meaning in life and found it. I believe these are the characteristics that I've written out in this survey. But came possible. I love myself. I love other people. I am optimistic etc That's a big better six all others appear when my hours and dinner do their research find out there's a P. it with a high enough frequency to be worth our time. Number seven. You gotta live round they have a time in psychobabble this is car present moment living thinking about it yesterday is gone. Nothing we can do will bring it back to Barbara who may not be here at least not in the form we are. Today you sports fans is all we got so you got to make the most of it. So when years ago actually two decades ago the number one hit on the Country Music list of hits was a song in Title live one day at a time it was great word to great music probably funnier not to live one day at a time. We're not saying that for you. But I will repeat some of the words it said tomorrow may never be shared be the way to teach me today to live one day at a time and you know a lot of students are great at this. I have seen on the Tech campus on several occasions T.-Shirt one of the featured say if you focused on living for today car pay do you know what does that mean sees the bed a you're already in your city there also have seen some rather shady looking students moping around campus where your teacher it's a incorporated note but night. Yes. But contrary do you see is that really the border the present moment living now. Right. Stock that's present moment living well before the day I mean I don't have to worry about next week's physics is really really NO NO NO NO NO NO because in my handy dandy day planner friend got all my day's activities written it says tonight from eight to ten study for next week's physics quiz. Is it moment living does not absolve us from to most responsibility but it does make life pretty special a characteristic of happy people use they laugh and smile alive or as I believe it. I have read more to sell us. Let me put it wasn't around who are in time saves not an apple a day keeps the doctor why. When I am your destiny lose my right she is. The time you need most to laugh and smile. Is the time you feel like laughing and smiling. You don't feel like it so you do it right and it brings you up a characteristic of happy people. Night characteristic of happy people and this is a big one sports fans. They are very good. SAF defeating behaviors. Now this is pretty heavy psychologically I hesitate to lay it on you but I'm going to anyway. Self-defeating behaviors and psychology is defined as a behavior that has a new paragraph but the lamb consequence is negative. And I want you to remember the fine standard self-defeating behaviors that happy people who have head like they play egg. A.B.C. Gone With The Wind that they are a do you see Gone With The Wind A stands for anger or our look at your hostility school or let your anger subscale if your anger subscale is more than seven. That means anger is having a negative effect on your life and you need to do something about it and I'm going to tell you the minute what you can do about it but anger is generally used to manipulate people all you get angry at someone who had been do something you didn't want to do on and then do something you didn't want to do. And so you're going to get every atom and they get their act together and do it or not do it. That is it better than because they'll get it done. But they hate your guts a little bit. That's why it's a self cleaning behavior when you get angry at people that need it. Payoff is it gets the job done. The long term negative consequence is people don't like you is a bull I will always talk about what happens if you have high anger score. First of all and I suggest you go grab the incredible book. This was a number one on the net. One fiction bestseller list when it first came out its way into your erode your so. Now it's not a good book. It's not your erogenous Is it your in ready to sound that is tongue in cheek terminology for self-defeating behaviors. And he has a chapter about every one of them anger blaming complaining they have given away money money good. Larry jealousy Procrastination is a chapter about everyone else why we do what short term payoff what the long term negative consequences is and how to eliminate it. So if you really are letting anger have too big a part of your life then read the anger chapter in a Roni it sounds it will help but then wrote to get counseling if I had then wrote my email address is on the Pass notes it's going to be published on the web page. You may or may we need a Starbucks for coffee and I will help you not just manage anger. I can help you get rid of anger. So that's the first one A.B.C. go with it when. Second self defeating behavior is blaming you not the modern era once in payment and the UP be granted that mother who did it. So that's the immediate payoff if I sit around and bloody not have to do any work for the long term consequences militant groups all over everybody in the floor not good. Writing don't do it. Comply or having. Complaining really bad. The median pay off when you complain about something is you not today. Think about it long term consequences. Since you didn't do anything about it. Whatever you're complaining about still exists and when I'm leading a backpack for G.T.. I encourage the students not to say I'm so hard it's too hard. Now you don't do that as complaining you put your bottle of your he is you take on and you want more slowly. You sit down and rest. Yeah you say you want to piss. Complaining. Change the circumstance about which you are complaining. That's the name of the game. A.B.C. God with the we're in and G. and WS in psychology. Do you have Bab yer opposite sides of the same psychological plane G. is good it wasting American energy or something happened the path. Bubba is away every wasting American hear something that might happen in the future but I'm useless. Instead of being a good thing you say that was have been I'm not going to do it anymore and you get on with life instead of where are you an observation about the critics creators they are what you do instead of that emotional energy betting you get ready for the careers where they go. So happy people are valid self-defeating behaviors are happy people. Number ten. And this is tough. I have found for a lot of people in Georgia today. Happy people take time to waste time they take time to waste and your mind is really tight comes into play here. If you're an espied here and an ass. To you right after you're an S.P. You are still having your similar time you can drop anything in the week I've been on and go have find that you are blessed if you're an S.P. If you're into just say. As a lot of tech students or any combination of then you have to schedule your leisure down. You've got this great big fellow devoted to wreak their sad you finish Don't you care about eight AM to eight pm Have fun and hang out with friends do nothing enjoy myself. Relax go to movies whatever you schedule it. People take time to waste time. In the eleven characteristic of happy people. It is they are great for Slash thankful and I do this in three ways. Let's test to you that if you are thankful in these three ways move on. You are fighting for to your friends and family for their support both emotional and financial results done you want to mom and dad said mom and dad. Thank you for the finances you've put in to me. Well I've been attacked and thank you for the emotional support. You've given me what you're going to have you did in your bankroll to friends and family. Number two if you believe in a higher priority to Frankfurt with a higher power for the blessings it's given you a number three. This is not obvious but it's really important. You sit down and you think about your state and you give thanks for it. Frank live in a free country. I'm thankful that I'm financially secure. I'm thankful that I come from a good source or not and I'm Frank for a bit I'm good luck in the cycle that I have lots of for and he's in your state of being Be thankful for your state of being so this is been caught on like drinking from a farm but we have learned a lot. And all wrong. What we're artists is obvious and a lot is not obvious. Let me show you what I'm talking about when we write it is obvious.
