A novel class of peptide α-ketoamides useful for selectively inhibiting serine proteases, selectively inhibiting cysteine proteases, generally inhibiting all serine proteases, and generally inhibiting all cysteine proteases, having the formula Y--CO--AA2 --AA1 --CO--NH--X.
