Abstract
The field of real time sound spatizalization is recently receiving
much attention, as suggested by the large number of proposals appeared
in last years - both from software spatialization frameworks
and from hardware spatialization interfaces. However, most of the
proposed works do not take into account the existing knowledge
in Human Computer Interaction Design, which causes them to remain
in a simplified approach. We propose a theoretical basis for
real-time spatialization design from a holistic perspective, based
on the Digital Musical Instruments theory, and use it to provide
a comparative review of recent proposals. Furthermore, we develop
our own state-of-the-art software spatialization system, 3Dj,
which may help in the task of design and evaluation of new proposals
for real-time sound spatialization in the fields of interactive
performance, data sonification or virtual environments.
