    Cylindrical And Spherical Triboelectric Generators
    ( 2017-12-12)
A generator includes a first member, a second member and a sliding mechanism. The first member includes a first electrode and a first dielectric layer affixed to the first electrode. The first dielectric layer includes a first material that has a first rating on a triboelectric series. The second member includes a second material that has a second rating on the triboelectric series that is different from the first rating. The second member includes a second electrode. The second member is disposed adjacent to the first dielectric layer so that the first dielectric layer is disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. The sliding mechanism is configured to cause relative movement between the first member and the second member, thereby generating an electric potential imbalance between the first electrode and the second electrode.

Polypeptide Hydrogels And Uses Related Thereto
    ( 2017-12-12)
This disclosure relates to self-assembling peptides that form hydrogels comprising peptide sequences for the activation of signaling pathways. In certain embodiments, the disclosure relates to compositions comprising a recombinant polypeptide comprising a cell signaling sequence, e.g., JAG-1 sequence, fused to a hydrogel polypeptide sequence. In certain embodiments, the disclosure relates to methods of cell culture on three dimensional scaffolds/hydrogels composed of self-assembling peptides disclosed herein.

Carbide-derived Carbons Having Incorporated Metal Chloride Or Metallic Nanoparticles
    ( 2017-12-05)
Carbide-derived carbons are provided that have high dynamic loading capacity for high vapor pressure gasses such as H₂S, SO₂, or NH₃. The carbide-derived carbons can have a plurality of metal chloride or metallic nanoparticles entrapped therein. Carbide-derived carbons are provided by extracting a metal from a metal carbide by chlorination of the metal carbide to produce a porous carbon framework having residual metal chloride nanoparticles incorporated therein, and annealing the porous carbon framework with H₂ to remove residual chloride by reducing the metal chloride nanoparticles to produce the metallic nanoparticles entrapped within the porous carbon framework. The metals can include Fe, Co, Mo, or a combination thereof. The carbide-derived carbons are provided with an ammonia dynamic loading capacity of 6.9 mmol g−1 to 10 mmol g−1 at a relative humidity of 0% RH to 75% RH.

Imaging System And Method For Multi-scale Three-dimensional Deformation Or Profile Output
    ( 2017-11-21)
An optical microscope system for 3D surface deformation and morphology measurement that can serve as a powerful tool in quality engineering and control, as well as in biological and materials research is described. The system was developed in part by combining the DAIC technique with optical microscopy. Decoding algorithms were derived for calculating the 3D displacement or profile of a micro-sized test sample from the in-plane displacement components of it first-order diffracted views.

Oligosaccharide Conjugates For Targeting Bacteria And Uses Related Thereto
    ( 2017-11-21)
This disclosure relates to conjugates for targeting bacteria and related uses. In certain embodiments, the disclosure relates to methods of transferring a molecule of interest into bacteria comprising mixing bacteria with a non-naturally occurring conjugate under conditions such that the conjugate is transported across the bacterial cell wall. Typically, the conjugate comprises an oligosaccharide and a molecule of interest. In certain embodiments, the molecule of interest may be a tracer or an antibiotic.

Ultra Massive Mimo Communication In The Terahertz Band
    ( 2017-11-21)
A communication system includes a two-dimensional array of a plurality of plasmonic nano-antennas. Each plasmonic nano-antenna supports a surface plasmon polariton wave. A plurality of communications elements each excite a corresponding one of the plasmonic nano-antennas, thereby causing a surface plasmon polariton wave that corresponds to a signal to form on each of the plasmonic nano-antennas.

Asymmetric Modified Carbon Molecular Sieve Hollow Fiber Membranes Having Improved Permeance
    ( 2017-11-14)
The present invention provides an asymmetric modified CMS hollow fiber membrane having improved gas separation performance properties and a process for preparing an asymmetric modified CMS hollow fiber membrane having improved gas separation performance properties. The process comprises treating a polymeric precursor fiber with a solution containing a modifying agent prior to pyrolysis. The concentration of the modifying agent in the solution may be selected in order to obtain an asymmetric modified CMS hollow fiber membrane having a desired combination of gas permeance and selectivity properties. The treated precursor fiber is then pyrolyzed to form an asymmetric modified CMS hollow fiber membrane having improved gas permeance.

Bio-compatible Radiopaque Dental Fillers For Imaging
    ( 2017-11-14)
Dental contrast formulations (“fillers”) of tailorable X-Ray radiopacity and methods for their use are provided. The disclosed fillers include mixtures of solid particles suspended in a biocompatible fluid. The solid particles contain one or more X-ray radiopaque materials. The biocompatible fluid can also contain one or more soluble X-ray radiopaque components. By controlling the composition of the solid particles, the composition of the biocompatible fluid, and the loading of the solid particles in the biocompatible fluid, the X-ray radiopacity and stability of the filler can be tailored to allow for improved discrimination of the filler within periodontal pockets, relative to adjacent soft tissue and teeth, so that the 3-D shape, volume, and depth of the pocket can be precisely and rapidly determined by X-Ray imaging.

    Single Electrode Triboelectric Generator
    ( 2017-11-07)
A triboelectric generator includes a first contact charging member, a second contact charging member and an electrical load. The first contact charging member has a contact side and an opposite back side. The first contact charging member includes a material that has a first rating on a triboelectric series and also has a conductive aspect. The second contact charging member has a second rating on the triboelectric series, different from the first rating, and is configured to come into contact with the first contact layer and go out of contact with the first contact layer. The electrical load electrically is coupled to the first contact charging member and to a common voltage so that current will flow through the load after the second contact charging member comes into contact with the first contact charging member and then goes out of contact with the first contact charging member.
