    Fried Augenbroe: COA Research Forum

    Since 1997, Fried Augenbroe heads the Building Technology area in the Doctoral Program in the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the USA, where he teaches graduate courses and conducts research in the fields of building performance concepts and simulation, control of smart systems, e-Business, system monitoring and diagnostics. He has also established an active research record in building process studies, construction project management, web hosted collaboration, and knowledge management, dealing with the development of software tools, their interoperability and their business integration. In the field of energy modeling Augenbroe has led large building energy simulation projects for the development and application of energy saving technologies in buildings and residential construction. He has developed building energy performance metrics for large institutional real estate managers such as the General Services Administration in the US. He is also active in the development of Communities of Practice exploiting the emergence of WEB 2.0 social computing environments. As one of the first applications he is developing a CoP in healthcare design.

    Planning for Disaster: Peru's Rio Santa Valley and Accelerating Climate Change

    The talk first addressed competing uses of water and the likely impacts on these uses as water in the Rio Santa becomes scarcer due to glacial retreat. It then outlined possible steps for building a coordinated effort to achieve an equitable and sustainable allocation of the river's reduced flow.

    Dr. Anatoliusz (Tolek) Lesniewski, Director, Interactive Media Architecture Group in Education (IMAGINE) Lab presented his research as part of the fall 2008 COA Research Forum talk series. The IMAGINE Lab creates high quality, video game-like environments by repurposing existing game engine software and integrates highly customized architectural models so that users can better understand the vision and context of an idea for the built environment.

    Solar Decathlon

    After taking sixth place in the international Solar Decathlon competition hosted by the Department of Energy, Georgia Tech’s "Icarus" is now open for tours in its new location on campus. Georgia Tech's Solar Decathlon House harnesses and celebrates the sun's power. As in the Greek tale of the architect Daedalus and his son Icarus who embarked on a flight to the sun, so too the modern fascination with building "lighter" and more "transparent" buildings is presumed to be at odds with "energy conservation." And yet, at no other time in the history of construction have advances in materials technology and energy systems design rendered Icarus' vision more realizable. Exploring the paradox of "lightness" and "energy conservation" is the inspiration that guides the design and construction of Georgia Tech's Solar Decathlon House.
