Abstract
The Global Media Festival is proud to host its first Indian film event with a screening of Masaan (2015), an award-winning and critically acclaimed drama directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. Set in the holy city of Varanasi, the film weaves together the lives of four individuals navigating the rigid constraints of caste, gender, and morality. A young man challenges caste divisions for love, a daughter struggles with guilt after a tragic encounter, a father grapples with moral dilemmas, and a child dreams of breaking free from societal expectations. Join us for this powerful cinematic experience, followed by a discussion with Masaan’s screenwriter, Varun Grover, as he shares insights into the film’s themes and the storytelling traditions of Hindi cinema.
