Abstract
Cancer has become a major topic of research in the search to find a cure that is effective. Described as a group of diseases that are characterized by the uncontrollable growth of cells, cancer is known to be the second major leading cause of death in the world behind heart disease. There are many therapeutic treatments for cancer such as surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation. However, a major concern arises when there are apparent side effects from such treatments. Therefore, targeted therapy, which utilizes nanoparticles to deliver drugs directly to the tumor region by way of the enhanced permeability and retention effect, has become an area of interest. The Bellamkonda Lab at Georgia Institute of Technology focuses on liposomal nanoparticles to deliver an anti brain tumor drug, Imipramine blue, directly to tumor sites. There have been many laboratory investigations concerning the toxicity and effectiveness of the Imipramine blue liposomes. As a result, they have proven to yield adequate results by inhibiting the growth of tumor cells and prolonging the Imipramine blue life span in the blood stream.
