Abstract
This thesis looks into how the Big Five personality traits affect usage of the mindfulness app Headspace among college students. Usage of mindfulness apps could help reduce stress in college students and it is important to understand how personality can affect someone's likelihood to benefit from or use these apps. 57 students took a pre-survey, then were asked to use the mindfulness app, Headspace, at their own discretion over a period of two weeks. Daily surveys were administered to get accurate usage data. At the end of the trial period, participants took the post-survey, and their usage data was then correlated to their personality traits and mindfulness scores. Personality was not found to have a significant effect on app usage but had a significant effect on mindfulness change. The personality traits Extraversion and Agreeableness, saw more mindfulness change than other big five traits. It can be concluded that usage of a mindfulness app could be impacted by factors other than personality like gender or locus of control. Additionally, those with high levels of Openness, Conscientiousness, or Neuroticism may need to spend more time with mindfulness practice to see an increase in trait mindfulness.
