Abstract
The East Lake Meadows Residents Association and the Atlanta Housing Authority engaged the College of Architecture and the Community Design Center of Atlanta in a series of two analyses which seek to maximize the positive impact of a $33.5 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to rehabilitate the community. The first analysis was an assessment of the architectural alternatives the rehabilitation might consider.
This project was conducted by the Graduate Program in City Planning and the Design Center in concert with the architectural analysis conducted by the Architecture Program. The objectives of this analysis were (1) To survey the residents regarding their aspirations for the rehabilitation; (2) To survey the residents regarding the attributes of the community and their present units they valued as well as the attributes which were causing problems; (3) To measure resident demographic characteristics in order to provide one element of the basis for the rehabilitation program; (4) To assess the adequacy of retail services in the immediate vicinity of the community and to analyze the potential for an expansion of retail facilities; (5) To assess transportation access to employment opportunities.
