Abstract
The WaterFirst Community Program was launched in 2002 in an effort to recognize and reward cities and counties across the state that go above and beyond the requirements of the law when it comes to the management and stewardship of our shared water resources. The program also provides technical assistance to a limited number of communities each year that are striving to improve their water stewardship and management and gain the WaterFirst designation. This paper will: 1) highlight the achievements of the communities that have received the designation; 2) explore the challenges faced by communities that are active in the WaterFirst Program; and 3) review the lessons learned through the program.
