Abstract
This study analyses a corpus of 470 projects in the Data Sonification Archive that were created between 1994 and 2024. Our previous work identified six curatorial classification strategies. In the present study we analysed trends over time for the Goal classification in three revised categories: art, engagement, and research; and Authorship, in particular, the gender of first authors as expressed via their name. Results indicated that the goal of engagement has become more prevalent at the expense of the goal of art, with a large effect size. At the same time, the gap between female and male first authors has narrowed, with a medium effect size. These developments may be reflected in eight published and often influential definitions of sonification. We discuss these trends in the context of other recently published studies of the development over time in sonification and related fields.
