Abstract
This dissertation presents the synthesis of nitrogen-containing and nitrogen-substituted aromatic compounds, focusing on heterocycles bearing amines, tetrasubstituted pyrroles, and nitro-substituted aromatic compounds and their potential applications across various disciplines, including biochemistry, materials science, and organic chemistry. Through the lens of a materials chemist, organic chemist, and biochemist, this dissertation underscores the benefits of interdisciplinarity in chemistry. In Chapter 2, the focus is on the importance of nitrogen-containing compounds in organic synthesis, specifically in methodology development. It explores the Zr-catalyzed synthesis of tetrasubstituted 1,3-diacyl pyrroles from N-acyl α-aminoaldehydes and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. Chapter 3 explores the influence of nitrogen-containing compounds in biochemistry, particularly bioorthogonal chemistry, by introducing a new bioorthogonal approach for modifying embedded aldehydes in peptides. Chapter 4 delves into the role of nitro-substituted aromatics in materials science, focusing on the unique properties of nitro groups and introducing a novel bi-functional photocleavable protecting group (PPG). This chapter marks the development of the first lignin-based bi-functional o-nitrophenylethyl-based photocleavable protecting group. In Chapter 5, the significance of amine-containing compounds in the field of materials science, especially in photovoltaic technology, is discussed. It showcases the role of perovskite solar cells with amines as integral components, with a focus on the use of thiophene-based diammonium salts to passivate defects in perovskite solar cells and an examination of the passivation mechanism regarding undercoordinated Pb²⁺ at the surface and grain boundaries. This dissertation's detailed exploration of these topics demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of chemistry and its far-reaching applications in various scientific and technological fields.
