Abstract
TV programs about gourmet food have been prevalent in Japan since the economic boom around the 1980s. During that time, many Japanese people were incredibly wealthy and had much spare money to spend on dining. They purchased expensive food and pursued the best quality of cuisines from different cultures. Since then, there has been an upswelling of Japanese food variety shows, food travelogues, food-themed manga, cooking competitions, and gourmet TV drama series. This paper will analyze a TV drama series called Midnight Diner (Shinya Shokudō, 2009) to explore the cultural and historical meanings behind Japanese food. This drama uses food as a medium to connect people and brings to public attention social issues including issues those involving some minority groups.
