Abstract
In 1999, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began a cooperative investigation in the lower Apalachicola- Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River basin to determine effects of pumpage and extreme climatic conditions on stream reaches that are habitat to federally protected mussel species. This study links the results of a previous USGS ground-water flow modeling study (Torak and McDowell, 1996) with results of recent mussel surveys presented by Brim Box and Williams (2000) and by Paula Johnson (Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center, Newton, Georgia, written commun., 1999). Results of this study will aid the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the management of federally protected mussel species and in assessing water-allocation alternatives developed by the States of Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.
