Abstract
In the fall of 2009 major cuts in state funding prompted tuition increases of an unprecedented 30%. The same cuts forced the UC Santa Cruz Library to reduce open hours from 190 to 134 per week. With students feeling squeezed from all sides, the library became a lighting rod for dissatisfaction on campus. Access Services played a key role in developing, coordinating and responding to library takeovers. We will discuss the process for developing a response plan, how it worked in practice and how it changed future safety, security and disaster planning.
