Abstract
The wine industry represents an interesting case of catching up of latecomers in traditional agro-food industry. In this paper we argue that the literature on the sectoral systems of innovation (SSI) provides a useful analytical framework for interpreting the industry trajectory of co-evolution along different dimensions and the catching up experiences across the New World. The paper adopts a comparative empirical perspective to investigate the key dimensions of the emergent wine SSI, identifying the main factors that lead new producers to catch up and, in some cases, to forge ahead. The study is based on the analysis of recent global trends and particularly on novel empirical evidence collected on research organizations and wine cellars located in Italy and in two emerging countries: Chile and South Africa
