Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(USEPA) developed a Federal Assistance Plan to help States standardize fish consumption advisories. Completed projects include an electronic bulletin board system for
tracking fish advisories, a critical evaluation of current fish consumption survey methodologies and a reexamination of
EPA's 6.5 g/person/day fish consumption rate used in the establishment of water quality criteria. Ongoing projects include development of a four volume set of guidance
documents for sampling and analysis of fish tissues, risk assessment, risk management and risk communication; establishment
of a national fish tissue contaminants database; and the development of public outreach materials designed to communicate the risks of consuming chemically
contaminated fish and shellfish. An overview of this program is presented, focusing on the key components leading to a consistent national protocol for fish consumption
advisories.
