Abstract
The Leadership and Management in Action Program (L-MAP) at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) has been a transformative experience for postdoctoral researchers (postdocs), equipping them with the leadership and teamwork skills necessary to thrive in their careers. Initially developed for early-career scientists in biomedical fields, the program has been successfully implemented with participants from the physical, natural, and social sciences, engineering, and the humanities. These participants found that the unit concepts advanced their understanding of different aspects of leadership, but they wanted scenarios from their own disciplines to further discuss and apply the unit concepts. To address this feedback, we recruited postdocs from Georgia Tech and WashU to complete L-MAP as participants, then guided them to create new case studies for their respective non-biomedical disciplines. As a result, this supplement is a collection of case studies designed by postdocs in engineering at Georgia Tech (there is another with case studies designed by postdocs in the humanities and social sciences at WashU). The postdocs involved in this project not only completed the L-MAP training but also took part in a unique collaboration with the editors, who guided them through every stage of developing and refining their own case studies, which are now presented in this supplement.
