Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in characteristic biochemical cascades, which show distinct sexual dimorphism in onset and outcomes. These sex differences span social, psychological, and biological effects, however specific biomolecular triggers have not been identified. Through assessing the estrogen linked transcription factor Nrf2 and downstream antioxidative protein HO-1, I aim to identify two contenders in the neuroimmune cascade of mild TBI. By using bio banked tissue injured through repetitive closed head mild TBI mouse models, I applied immunohistochemistry techniques to analyze the relative densities and intracellular locations of Nrf2 and HO-1. Through isolation of Nrf2 levels in neurons, the trending data shows higher levels of Nrf2 expression in females, with more similar trends seen between Nrf2 and HO-1 in females than in males. Trends between regions also show sexual deviation, with more variability seen in female injury and sham samples.
