Abstract
The significant contribution that the university can make to social and economic
development in Africa is now well-established. Whereas the higher education sector in
general had previously been neglected by international development agencies, African
countries are now urged to restore the role of higher education as a public good and
transform universities to institutions of relevance that are responsive to national priorities.
Exactly what the priorities of the 'public good' in Africa should be has been the subject
of much debate.
