Abstract
In December 2000, stakeholders in the middle Chattahoochee River basin and The Georgia· Conservancy initiated a watershed planning effort under the Conservancy's Blueprints for Successful Communities Program. Early in the planning process, a Middle Chattahoochee River Steering Committee formed, consisting of stakeholders representing diverse public and private interests in the region. The steering committee and the Conservancy partnered with the City and Regional Planning Program at Georgia Tech in Atlanta on two occasions, spring 2000 and fall 2001, for technical assistance provided through graduate level studio courses. The spring 2000 studio helped facilitate a steering committee planning workshop in the Mulberry Creek sub-watershed in Harris County, Georgia, a rural watershed experiencing "exurban" residential development pressures, and compiled comprehensive plan information for each Georgia county located in the watershed. The fall• 2001 studio gathered watershed information and made watershed enhancement recommendations for two additional study areas, the Roaring Branch/Linsday Creek sub-watersheds in a largely urban and urbanizing section of Columbus, Georgia (Muscogee County), and the Hodchodkee Creek sub-watershed containing Lumpkin, Georgia (Stewart County) in the economically depressed, rural region south of Columbus. The fall 2001 studio worked in close contact with the steering committee, the Conservancy, and local stak.eholders in the two study areas. The results of the fall 2001 studio assignment are presented in this report.
