Abstract
The aim of this research is to explore and implement the optimal charge-current profiles for Li-ion batteries. Charging batteries in cell phones and other small electronics with batteries (in battery banks or laptops) is increasingly normal these days. Volume and charging efficiency are critical in this space because both source and load lose the energy they need and cannot recover. Charging batteries in a way that maximizes their efficiency is, therefore, as important as transferring energy with efficiency. This research investigates how charge current profiles can save energy (with over 400 charge-discharge experiments), develops a programmable tester that shapes and varies current accurately, and proposes a single switched inductor that can charge a li-ion efficiently while at the same time supply a load with a steady supply voltage.
