Abstract
The Smith-Kettlewell Display Tools (SKDtools) is an accessibility toolkit for the popular modeling and data manipulation environment MATLAB. It provides blind and visually-impaired users with a variety of sonification and tactile display options, and is assembled from tools already existing within the MATLAB environment. Two distinct sonification methods are implemented, and one of the intentions of the project is to examine the relative effectiveness of these two methods using rigorous psychophysical techniques. SKDtools was developed at The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute's Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center under a grant from the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research.
